Living Well In Your Water … Water Miracle!

How much water should you be drinking?

Lack of water is a major trigger of daytime fatigue, mid-day munchies, leg and toe cramps, and inability to mentally focus.

A non active person needs a half ounce of water per pound of body weight per day. That is ten 8 ounce glasses a day if your weight is 160 pounds. For every 25 pounds you exceed your ideal weight, increase it by one 8 ounce glass.

An active, athletic person needs 2/3 ounce per pound which is 13-14 8 ounce glasses a day if you're 160 pounds. The more you exercise the more water you need. Spread out your water intake throughout the day. Do not drink more than 4 glasses within any given hour. After a few weeks your bladder calms down & you will urinate less frequently, but in larger amounts.

These are just guidelines for a healthy person.  Check with your doctor to see what is right for you.

Where would life be without water?  It is essential to maintaining our body.  Human survival is dependent on water.  Water has been ranked by experts as second only to oxygen as essential for life. Humans have lived 81 days without food but will die in 5 days without water. If a person loses 5% of his total water, he will start to hallucinate, become disoriented, and experience twitching muscles. If he loses 15% of his total water, his life is endangered.

Water Facts:

  • The average adult body is 55 to 75% water.
  • Two -thirds of your body weight is water.
  • A human embryo is more than 80% water.
  • A newborn baby is 74% water.
  • Everyday your body must replace 2 1/2 quarts of water.

The National Institute of Health reports that 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. However, this figure is likely understated. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

Even mild dehydration will slow down your metabolism, speed up aging, reduce resistance to disease, and reduce muscle recovery after exercise

The water you drink literally becomes you! Since such a large percentage of our bodies is water, water must obviously figure heavily in how our bodies function. We need lots of fresh water to stay healthy. Aside from aiding in digestion and absorption of food, water regulates body temperature and blood circulation, carries nutrients and oxygen to cells, and removes toxins and other wastes. This "body water" also cushions joints and protects tissues and organs, including the spinal cord, from shock and damage.

Conversely, lack of water can be the cause of many ailments such as premature births, headaches, muscle soreness, water retention, joint pain and mental confusion.  The National Institute of Health (NIH) says drinking a quart of water daily reduces the risk of colon cancer by 45%, reduces the risk of breast cancer by 79%, reduces the risk of bladder cancer by 50%.

If you have been to a spa lately, you will see that we always encourage you to drink water before and after your treatments.  Many spa treatments will help to increase the blood supply to the muscles which helps to move waste products out of the muscles and tissues and into the blood stream.  Drinking water will help to remove this waste from your body.
