I am having my first massage and facial over the Christmas holiday. I really did not want to have any services, but my girlfriend and daughter insisted that I go with them at the resort we are going to. I am not sure which treatments are right for me and the menu is too complicated. I am afraid that I will embarrass myself, my daughter or my friend. What should I do?

The first thing to do is relax. Spas have first time spa goers all the time. Everyone at the spa is there to help you and they can take you through the menu over the telephone. The spa receptionists or spa concierge are trained to ask the right questions to help you select the appropriate spa treatments for you. You do not have to go through it by yourself. If you prefer to have an experienced person prescribe the appropriate treatment, call the spa and ask for a lead aesthetician or lead massage therapist to call you. They will ask you questions about what results you want, your health and medical conditions and review the services that will meet your needs. In addition, they can take a look at what therapists or aestheticians are available on that day and select one who is great with first time spa goers and well experienced in the services you want.
Your friend and daughter already know that you are apprehensive. If they have been to this spa before they may also have recommendations. Spas exist to help you achieve balance and be stress free, not create it. Everyone who works at the spa are there to service you. They want you to enjoy your experience and they take pride in explaining things you may not understand. No one in the spa will judge you or talk about you. It is a part of the professionalism and confidentiality that comes with the spa industry.
