Breast Cancer

New Tool For Early Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Scientists from Finland, Germany and the ESRF have developed a new X-ray technique for the early detection of breast cancer. This allows 3D visualization of the breast with a high spatial resolution and is extremely sensitive to alterations in the tissue, such as those generated by cancer. This technique could be used in the next years in hospitals. It may help doctors to detect tumours with greater precision than is possible using current X-ray mammography.

Fall Foliage

Fall Foliage 2008

As summer ends, thoughts of autumn come to mind; that ever so subtle nip in the air, the beautiful reds, golds, oranges and purples of fall foliage and the bounty of the fall harvest. How does this all happen, well, with fall, the days grow shorter, trees stop producing the green pigment in leaves we see during summer. During those warm early autumn days, the other pigments are produced along with sugars, creating the bright oranges and golds we see in the fall. Spavelous has put together the 2008 Fall Foliage Season list of links to see the progress of the Fall foliage in your state and some of the best ways to enjoy them.

Spa Getaway at Half Price

Have you been feeling a little stressed? Overworked? Need a break? Well, September 15th – 21st may have the spa treatments you want at the price you can afford. Once again, Spa Week and the many participating spas have paid to bring you $50 spa treatments.  Headed by Christina Castro and Cheryl Reid Spa Week was created out of the belief that “stress is omnipresent. From anxiety to work to family, it is a non-discriminating byproduct of the world we live in. So when the opportunity to alleviate some of that surmounting tension is offered, the spa experience becomes not just a pampering whimsy for the privileged but an integral part of a healthy lifestyle.”

water

Water... makes you healthy and beautiful

The word SPA is derived from the Latin "Sanus Per Aquam" meaning health by or through water, but how healthy is your water? Growing up in the fifties and sixties, we rarely gave a second thought to drinking tap water. Of course, as a child, I could tell the difference in the taste of water from the various homes we would visit. The water quality in the home I grew up in Commack, Long Island was good. However, I always thought that the water at my grandparent’s home in Elmhurst, Queens, tasted better to me. Perhaps it was the way the aerator on the faucet moved the water out of the faucet. The water came out feeling soft, bubbly and was crystal clear. On the other hand, when I visited my aunts in Passaic, New Jersey, I never would drink the water. It almost looked brownish as it came out of the faucet and it tasted terrible. While the water in our homes is not “free” never did we think that there would come a day, when people would pay to drink bottled water. Which leads us to the big question, is drinking bottled water really better?

Weight Lost for Health and Beauty

Is getting fat in your future? Many of us only have to look in the mirror to know that as a nation we are getting fat. Johns Hopkins and government researchers looked at obesity trends over 30 years and predict that unless they change, by the year 2048, all of us will be overweight.  Despite efforts to contain the spread of the American waistline, obesity rates in adults rose in 31 states last year - and no state experienced a decline, according to a report issued today by the nonprofit research group Trust for America's Health. The report also found that 85 percent of adults believe that obesity, with its health risks of heart disease and diabetes, has become an epidemic. Yet 22 percent of those surveyed said they never exercise.

Native American Spa Treatment

Native American Spa Treatments for Health and Beauty

Long before the white man set foot on American soil the Native Americans, had been living in America. When the Europeans came here, there were probably about 10 million Native Americans populating the United States. They had been living in the US for quite some time. It is believed that the first Native Americans arrived during the last ice-age, approximately 20,000 - 30,000 years ago through a land-bridge across the Bering Sound, from northeastern Siberia into Alaska. The oldest documented Indian cultures in North America are Sandia (15000 BC), Clovis (12000 BC) and Folsom (8000 BC).  Growing up in Commack, Long Island, New York, I was very aware of the Native American culture. The name Commack comes from the Secatogue Indians who lived on the south shore between Copiague and Bayport. They named their northern lands in the center of the island Winnecomac meaning "Pleasant lands." This is what they must have thought when they looked over this area of flat lands with rich soil, and thick oak forests abounding with plants and wildlife. From the earliest days Commack was known for its fertile soil, abundance of game, and wood. At the end of my street, was a farm which grew potatoes, corn, tomatoes, lettuce and several other crops. Commack at that time instilled a respect for nature, the Native American heritage and the understanding of traditions and philosophies that are applied in some spas today.

Hot Spring Spas

Hot Spring Spas for Health and Beauty

Mineral waters and hot springs - the original spas - have been an important part of stress-relief and healing in many cultures for thousands of years. Towns with therapeutic hot springs grew into popular destinations for holiday retreats. Today this idea is intact but greatly expanded into modern health resorts offering total, integrated environments devoted to relaxation and re-energizing - and curing what ails you. The spa trail may have been blazed by the Romans, who discovered the medicinal benefits of thermal waters, but many Native Americans developed their own traditions. According to Jayson Loam, author of "Hot Springs and Hot Pools of the U.S. and Southwestern Canada .," they believed the Great Spirit resided in the earth's center, and looked on these 'Big Medicine Fountains' as “a special gift from the creator."

Cool Spa Treatments

Cool Spa Treatments for Health and Beauty

Living in Arizona, and experiencing a continuum of days in excess of one hundred degrees, cold spa treatments may appear to be refreshing. In the past, I have ruled these services out, because I prefer to be warm and cozy. Hot stones, warm booties, hot towels, hot steam rooms and saunas are a few of my favorite spa treatments even in the heat of summer. The thought of a cold plunge, ice therapy, cold stones or cooling gel gives me the chills.  Of course, as a massage therapist, I have always understood the importance of cold therapies, and I have frequently practiced them on my clients. After recently having a LaStone Massage with the originator of this wonderful service, I rediscovered the wonderful world of cold therapies. Mary Nelson, works her magic with a variety of stone carved rings and balls using a combination of hot and cold therapies. She has created the optimum spa experience that leaves your body feeling relaxed, exhilarated, calm, and energized all at the same time. Your skin feels exfoliated and tone. Your mind and thoughts are clear and you just feel Spavelous®.
