Spas as Social Centers

Spa experiences are very much about touching and this will always be important. Part of the fun of some spas, is that they can create areas that are wonderful self-service “spa playgrounds.” Spa guests can pay a “healthy” daily fee to use facilities that will be attended by several “spa concierges” who will introduce them to a buffet of fun yet purposeful delights

The Grotto at Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa, has created a sampling of what this experience may be. When you arrive, you take an elevator down to the underground world of The Grotto. This mysterious, intriguing cavern is filled with a natural mineral water mist and the scent of sea kelp and aloe vera. You wear only a swim suit so your entire body can be “painted” with a rich green body moisturizer (the source of the sea kelp and aloe vera scent). Then move into the Hydrating Chamber so the rich moisturizer can work its magic. After you feel calm, cool and moisturized, simply shower off the body masque. To top it all off, enter the cool mist chamber for a cup of Glen Ivy tea and a crisp green apple. Like Club Mud, there is something fun and youthful about it all. And, there is also the more serious business of moisturizing and refreshing.

Glen Ivy Day Spa Locations, California Day Spas

This year you may find more spas putting in playgrounds that can include, but not be limited to: specialty showers and treatment tubs; private as well as group steam rooms, saunas, and air-jet floatation and cascading whirlpools with color therapy, music therapy, and aromatherapy; product bars with muds, salts and aromatherapy blends that people can apply to themselves; reflexology walking paths both in the water and on the land; meditation gardens; labyrinths; resource library with self-help, healing and motivational books, CDs, computers that will assist in the selection of services and products, retail centers that are designed as home spa relaxation rooms where guests can “try and buy” special massage chairs, floatation beds, scalp massagers. Food and beverage stations with elixirs, nutriceuticals and water bars.

It is Time to Sparty!

Spas will be designed to have more all-in-one spa suites and lock-off rooms with private spa lounges so that people can gather for spa parties, inter-generational family get-togethers business renewal meetings. Spas will expand their offerings to include life-enriching seminars and programs that focus on activities such as wine tasting, art, music, cooking, pain management, and healthy aging.  Spa Parties will happen at home and in spas.

Getting down to business

More and more business retreats and conventions will take place at the spa.

New business spotlight on Healthy Touch Day Spa

Williamsport PA Day Spa / Pennsylvania Spas / Health Touch Day Spa

Stacey Pulizzi offers customers different services than other spas at her business Health Touch Day Spa, Williamsport PA. Eyebrow extensions are one of those different services and around mid-April she will be offering customers teeth-whitening.

“It will be done using a laser light beam,” Pulizzi said.

Pulizzi said she was trained in Philadelphia to do eyelash extensions, and that each extension is glued to an individual eyelash.

“It takes about two hours, but they look so great when they are done,” Pulizzi said. “A lot of people get them for the holidays, for holiday parties and for New Year’s Eve,” she added.

The extensions can last up to two months with “refills,” Pulizzi said.

One of her more popular services is the couple’s massage. One of her rooms has two beds where the couples can be massaged.

“It is a great introduction for someone that has never had a massage before,” she said.

Brooke Beatty, who works at Rachel’s Salon, helps Pulizzi if she has an overflow of massage customers and with the couple’s massages.

Other types of massages and services include: hot stone massages, aromatherapy massage, classic Swedish massages, neuromuscular massages, body wraps, mud wraps body waxing and more.

Pulizzi has an aesthetician license that she received in Altoona. She also said that she continues her education by attending one or two additional classes per year.

She has been a massage therapist for 10 years.

Pulizzi said that since she opened about a year ago the response from the community has been excellent. “I have a lot of repeat clients,” she said. “I’m in a good location too so that really helps.”

Types of Massages

Arizona Resorts/ Arizona Travel Deals / Arizona Golf / Spas in AZ

This article is brought to you by Spavelous.com.

A massage is one of the requisite services offered in a typical vacation or day spa. It’s relaxing, relieves your body of stress and muscle pain, and will definitely put you on a sound, uninterrupted sleep.

The various types of massages can be classified into two categories: those designed for relaxation and those intended for pain management or for medical purposes. These are not mutually exclusive classifications however and an overlap sometimes occurs.

One of the most popular relaxation therapies is the Swedish massage. It was named after; you guessed it, a Swedish doctor named Per Henrik Ling who developed the technique during the 18th century. The massage employs firm, gentle pressure to improve blood circulation and relieve muscle pain and tension. Muscles are rubbed in the direction of blood flow returning to the heart. The massage is usually performed using the following techniques: long gliding strokes, kneading of muscles, circular movements to create friction, oscillatory movements to create vibration, staccato tapping, and finally, bending and stretching.

Another common massage technique is the shiatsu which means finger pressure. Traditionally based on the Chinese meridian system, the massage works within the theory of energy circulation in the body and on the concept that there are particular pressure points that can be pressed to reverse the imbalances in the natural energy flow. Fingers and palms are used to apply localized pressure on these points. This is then followed by stretching exercises. During the session, the clients are taught to coordinate their breathing with the massage in order to maximize the benefits of the treatment.

A more physically engaging technique is the Thai massage. It is believed to have been developed 2500 years ago by an Indian physician. It later reached Thailand and was gradually influenced by Chinese medicine. It then became a traditional part of Thai medicine and was usually performed by monks. Thai massage involves a combination of yoga and acupressure. Therapists use their hands, knees, legs, and feet to apply pressure and move your body into various yoga-like stretching movements.

For a more eclectic massage experience, you may want to try the polarity massage. A curious amalgamation of modern science and ancient methods, polarity therapy combines various therapies and treatments to achieve holistic wellness. The treatment is typically divided into four parts: bodywork, diet, exercise, and meditation.

Other massages are focused on specific parts of the body such as the head, neck, shoulders, arms, and back. The cranial sacral massage, for instance, is a gentle technique concentrated on the head and neck.

There is also a specially designed massage for pregnant women. This helps relieve cramps, tension, fatigue, and stiffness as well as reduce depression and anxiety attacks.

For pain management massages, the more common techniques are the neuromuscular therapy (NMT) and the sports massage or deep tissue massage. The NMT, performed by a trained specialist, deals with the soft tissues such as muscles, tendons, and connective tissues to restore balance in the central nervous system. The sports massage, on the other hand, can be availed of in a spa. As the name implies, it concentrates on the muscle groups most used in sports activities. The massage is a good warm-up before a workout and a suitable relaxation therapy afterwards.

Ways to save at the spa

Spa Deals / Spa Specials / Spa Discounts

This article is brought to you by Spavelous.com.

Want to de-stress for less? You can get a bargain at your local spa if you know where to look.

In exchange for a little online homework, a few smart questions and some flexibility in the days and times you book, you can earn free services and score great discounts. Here’s how:

1. Take advantage of off-peak times. For spas, Saturdays are usually the busiest days. If the spa is located in or near a business area, lunch hours and right after work are popular, too.

But spas will often offer specials if you’re willing to come when they are not as crowded.

“At the beginning of the week, spas are very much in favor of discounting their services or giving an additional service,” says Hannelore Leavy, executive director of the Day Spa Association. “It’s always a good idea to check off-hours.”

2. What’s your line? Some spas give discounts to teachers, while others will give discounts to members of the armed forces or their families. Ask spas about any job-related specials.

3. Put yourself on the list. If you have a favorite spa, sign up for the e-mail list. Just as with last-minute travel deals, some spas notify customers of super specials for unbooked times. So if you can rearrange your schedule on short notice, you’ll reap the benefits.

At the Brass Rose Spa in Blairstown, N.J., owner Rosemary Weiner sends e-blasts offering discounts of 10 percent to 40 percent to customers who are willing to sign up for unbooked times. The catch? The appointment may be set for the next day or two. The slots are usually gone within about 10 minutes of the e-mail blast, so you have to move quickly.

4. Cruise the Web. Many spas will put coupons for services on their own Web sites. Other sites, like Spavelous, will offer discounts and specials to encourage you to visit their Spavelous member spas.

5. Don’t go it alone. Often, spas offer discounts or free extra services when you visit with a friend, significant other or group. Call ahead and find out what kind of deals they offer if you’re not going solo.

6. Ask about self-serve. “The best spa deals are the self-applied treatments in a circuit,” says Kim Marshall, who runs The Marshall Plan, a consulting and PR firm serving the spa industry.

Many spas have circuit treatments where you steam, soak, apply mud or scrub in a set order for a prescribed period of time. “It’s always cheaper because the spa doesn’t have to pay a therapist,” she says.

Marshall tried this herself at the Body Blitz in Toronto. The self-applied treatment included several different kinds of mud, soaks, baths, steams and scrubs. Afterward, she booked a half-hour massage. But it “felt like an hour because I’d already been melted,” Marshall says.

7. Bundle your treatments. “Look for spa packages,” says Weiner. Just like your phone or cable plan, if you combine a few services you might get a better deal than ordering a la carte.

One hot option for spas these days: two-for-one deals, where you pay for one treatment and get a second service at no charge. Not only do you get more for your money, but it also allows you to sample new services.

8. Celebrate the holidays. “Around the holidays, spas will usually do special treatments that are discounted,” says Weiner.  Look for chocolate-infused skin treatment around Valentine’s Day, you could also enjoy a tasty discount.

9. Use a destination spa as a day spa. If you’re lucky enough to live within driving distance of a resort or destination spa, you might be able to purchase a little pampering there for less than full fare.

10. Ask about specials. Yes, sometimes it is that easy. Just call ahead and ask what kind of specials or discounts your favorite getaway spot is currently offering.

11. Spread the word. Want to get a discount or free treatment? Refer a friend or co-worker to your favorite spa. Many will offer discounts or free services for both the new customer and the person who made the referral. With so much competition for spa customers, “there are a lot of incentives for referrals,” says Leavy.

12. Try something new. Many times, if a spa is introducing a new treatment, it will offer it at a discount to get people to try it, says Leavy. So if you ask what’s new, instead of sticking with the old reliable, you might get a great deal.

13. Buy in bulk. “If you buy a whole series of treatments, you may save some money,” says Leavy. Different spas will work it different ways, but the bottom line is that if you are a repeat customer for certain services, you may be eligible for a discount.

At some spas, you buy a number of sessions for the same treatment (massage, manicures, etc.) in advance and either get a discount or a number of the treatments free. The downside: You have to pay in advance of using the services. If you don’t use them all, you don’t get your money’s worth.

Other salons have “frequent flier” programs: Complete a set number of the same treatments and earn discounts or free treatments.

Often, that’s a better deal for consumers because you don’t have to pay in advance, but you’re still getting a volume discount, says Weiner. At the Brass Rose, after customers get their fourth facial, the fifth one is free. End result: a 20 percent discount on each facial.

14. Ask about prices before you go. “I always suggest if you’re going to go to a spa, find out what the prices are beforehand,” says Altman. Ask friends, co-workers or relatives for recommendations — not just to a particular spa, but also for specific aestheticians. “Find out who they like,” he says.

Madison Avenue Salon moves to spacious location

Madison Avenue Salon / Ahwatukee AZ Day Spas / Arizona Spa Deals

This article is brought to you by Spavelous.com.

Sean and Deborah Larusso have moved their Ahwatukee Madison Avenue Salon & Day Spa to a new 5,349-square-foot space. They’re open and ready to provide everything from pedicures and massages to haircuts.

“We’re a little worn out and run down, but at the same time we’re very excited,” Sean Larusso said Monday as he welcomed clients and the curious who wandered in to see the plush salon and spa with its neutral color palette.

The new facility began with an interior demolition last August. After a two-month wait for a building permit, the architectural renderings began to take physical shape.

“This is the third salon we’ve expanded, but never to the extent where we’re actually moving an existing business with 40 employees that serves 3,000 clients a month,” said Larusso, 41. “It’s one I probably won’t want to do again.”

New amenities include a pedicure room that provides simple bench seating rather than oversized chairs. All nails, fingers and toes are done in one room. Separate rooms are provided for massages, facials and coloring.

“The space we’ve put together is, in my opinion, pretty amazing,” Larusso said. “We’ve learned from the wants and needs of the community from our other places and incorporated them here.”

Larusso is the third generation of his family to be in the salon business.

“All together, the family has been in the salon business for almost 100 years,” he said.

The couple opened the Madison Avenue Salon and Day Spa in Ahwatukee in 1998. In 2001, the location at Chandler Fashion Center was added.

“We continue to hold to the mission statement we adopted in April, 1998,” Larusso said. “It’s not just a place to come, it’s a destination.”
