The facilities vary wildly in quality and amenities. Some offer little more than a couple of rooms with massage tables, lighted candles, flute music in the background and a place to shower, while others are labyrinths of adobe or marble, with private jetted tubs and gardens, top-of-the-line body products and service that walks the fine line between solicitous and smothering.

Here are four great spas, large-scale operations where you’ll want to come early or stay late, because the run of the facility is included with the purchase of a treatment. That means swimming pools, soaking tubs, meditation gardens, state-of-the-art fitness centers, organic snacks and loose-leaf teas, as well as attendants at your beck and call and all the ice-cold water with lemon slices you can drink.

Sanctuary Spa At Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain, Scottsdale AZ

With Camelback’s magical red cliffs as a backdrop and Asian-influenced treatments administered in a soothing, naturally inspired environment, Sanctuary is aptly named. No detail is spared, from the choice of top-shelf Forti whole leaf tea to sip between treatments, to the careful placement of trailing lantana plants so they release their scent as you walk past, to the proficient and indulgent staff.

* High point: The on-site restaurant, Elements, serves exquisite, healthful food that can be sent to the rejuvenating, bamboo-lined atrium.

* Rough spot: Alas, one can’t live here permanently.

* Details: Sanctuary Spa at Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain, 5700 E. McDonald Drive

* Treatments: The massages here are masterful (Swedish, $140/60 min.; hot stone $200/90 min.), as are the Asian-inspired services, including luk pra kope ($250/120 min.), a Thai massage with medicinal herbs, and the Japanese shiatsu ($140/60 min.). Also popular are the tangerine ($85/30 min.) and bamboo/lemongrass ($85/30 min.) scrubs.

* Other amenities: The quiet room opens up to a shallow, rock-filled pool with Camelback a stone’s throw away, and the teas available there are top of the line; spend some time simply soaking in Sanctuary’s good vibes, and then take a dip in the vitality pool. Looking for something more active? The fitness center, admission to which is included with a treatment, is small but filled with some of the most knowledgeable folks in the business, and the infinity pool is cool. They have a couples suite for an extra fee for those who want privacy together while getting spa services.

Spa Avania At the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale at Gainey Ranch

The unassuming front of this palm-lined building, which is separate from the hotel, belies the oasis behind, a beguiling series of mineral pools, gardens, a lotus pond and walkways that lead to tranquil treatment rooms. Choose your music from a menu, and then let the well-trained staff transport you to a state of bliss before releasing you back into the gardens, where you can wile the day away meditating, swimming or snacking on antioxidant foods. The spa claims it synchronizes your treatments to the time of day; whatever that means, it’s hard to argue with success.

* High point: The large mineral pool and tinier secluded pools are delightful, and the fitness center is included; plan to spend some time beforehand working out and afterward relaxing.

* Rough spot: The descriptions of the treatments are a little vague (”Glorious Skin: Lifting-Smoothing-Youthful” does not tell what $180 pays for), and it’s annoying to have to call to have all of them detailed.

* Details: Spa Avania at the Hyatt, 7500 E. Doubletree Ranch Road

* Treatments: Avania keeps its rosters short and to the point, which does make it easier to choose. The massages range from Thai ($225/90 min.) to deep-tissue, hot stone and golfer’s (all $165/60 min.), and there are several body wraps, scrubs and facials, such as the Crushed Pearl ($180). The Foot Ritual ($150/60 min.) begins with exfoliation in a giant bowl and moves on to a series of wonderful-smelling oils and lotions massaged in as you lie back and enjoy (the “desert” music blends nicely).

* Other amenities: In addition to the mineral pool and the smaller soaking pools, Avania also has a great fitness center; yoga classes are $18 per class, but the workout room is free with a treatment.

The Spa At the Four Seasons Scottsdale at Troon North

In the shadow of Pinnacle Peak, the Four Seasons is a sprawling campus of adobe buildings landscaped with saguaros and other indigenous cacti, with a series of large pools sided by private cabanas for late-afternoon siestas. The spa is roomy and inviting, with large saunas and steam rooms.

* High point: The location makes this feel like a true getaway, and the setting is gorgeous. Potpourri in the lockers is a nice touch.

* Rough spot: Jackhammers take away from the birdies singing at a resort on a Saturday while people are trying to relax by the pool. And having no prices on the Web site is annoying.

* Details: The Spa at The Four Seasons Scottsdale Troon North, 10600 East Crescent Moon Drive

* Treatments: Stone ($150/50 min.) and peel-style facials ($170/25 min.), as well as a body polish ($150/50 min.) that alternates bath salts and hot oil, a Sedona earth clay body mask ($205/80 min.) and a two-person massage ($300/50 min.) called “Head Over Heels” where one therapist works on your feet while the other gives you a facial. Four Seasons in One ($205/80 min.) is a journey of scents (peppermint for winter, lavender for summer), scrubs and massage from head to toe, culminating in a heavenly scalp massage.

* Other amenities: The Saguaro Blossom restaurant is within walking distance along a cacti-lined path at the back of the resort and offers all outdoor seating with a view of Pinnacle Peak and Troon Mountain. You can dine pool-side, as well (complimentary fruit kebabs, and the towels are kept chilled), and the pool has inviting cabanas. A huge fitness center with spectacular views makes a workout enticing, and there’s also a full-service salon.

Golden Door Spa At the Boulders Resort

Situated at the edge of Scottsdale in Carefree, Golden Door is a 33,000-square-foot, adobe-style spa surrounded by mesmerizing boulders and plenty of breathing space. Relax by the pool or order a bowl of healing miso soup after your treatment, and be sure to grab a copy of the recipe for the potassium broth the spa serves to guests who hike or take an aerobics class; it’s tasty.

* High point: The private “snail shell” showers are delightful, the Japanese O’Furo soaking pool charming, and the little drawers in the lockers practical. Love the Eucalyptus line of products.

* Rough spot: The meditation room inside the ladies’ area could use a covering to filter noise; for such a large facility, it was surprising that robe-clad men and women had to walk through the same area after treatment.

* Details: Golden Door Spa at the Boulders Resort, 34631 N. Tom Darlington Drive, Carefree AZ

* Treatments: A wide range of massage therapies ($145/50 min., $195/80 min.), including one targeted to those undergoing cancer treatment and several for folks suffering from sports-related injuries. Eastern-influenced treatments include acupuncture ($185/50 min.), Thai massage ($150/50 min.), shiatsu ($150/50 min.) and Watsu ($155/50 min.). They also offer the services of a shaman, American Indian therapies, ayurvedic treatments and have a full-service salon.

* Other amenities: Sit by the pool out back before or after treatment, or do the recommended “purification ritual” in the ladies’ area starting with a hot steam in their spiral room, followed by a cool-off in the groovy, private “snail showers,” then soak in the Japanese-style O’Furo pool. Guided rock climbing and mountain biking are offered for an extra charge.

In the back room with its garden mural and calming classical music, clients luxuriate as they soak their feet and enjoy a cushy massage chair. When your cuticles are under control and your nails are shaped to perfection, you’ll be ready for the stimulating and cleansing exfoliation with a ginger root and sugar cane paste that goes on like warm brown sugar. Next, a wasabi gel (yes, the same wasabi that spices up your sushi) is massaged onto the feet before they are slid into plastic bags and cloaked with a warmed pillow to enhance absorption. Specially trained therapists have refined the Watercourse Way hot stone massage, based on ancient therapies using the weight and firmness of river rocks. A large oval stone, heated just over body temperature, provides warmth to the core when you lie down on it at the start of the treatment.

Once you are slathered with warmed oil, your therapist will use long flowing strokes to glide the heated, polished flat stones across your body, creating a deeply soothing sensation. The basalt stones are said to possess special properties that carry relaxing heat or stimulating cold to muscles.

After each area is massaged, the still-warm stones are strategically placed under tight shoulders or a sore lower back to relieve knots and tension. The end result is an overall sense of well-being and very stretched out and de-stressed muscles, head to toe.

The customized Atelier facial was designed by senior aesthetician Claudia J. Lopez and is only offered at this Aveda spa. It has all the cleansing and moisturizing steps of a high-quality facial - exfoliation, extraction, masque and moisturizing - but the final cooling treatment leaves the recipient with glowing rather than raw red skin.

Before the facial you will receive a skin analysis reviewing “the three T’s,” texture, temperature and tone, allowing the individualization of your facial. Many people “don’t have a clue” about their skin type, Lopez notes. The spa uses all Aveda plant-based products chosen for your skin type. Even the salicylic acid is certified organic.

For the last step in your facial, the “Outer Peace Cooling Mask” is laced with a lemon tea tree and rose geranium mixture that is the Atelier secret to calming inflamed skin. Instead of sending you home in dark glasses after your facial, this 90-minute treatment is aimed at leaving you refreshed and ready to face the world.

If the scenery and the wine country isn’t enough to completely relax you, maybe a spa will help. Belle Haven Spa unofficially opened in November on the grounds of Chaumette Winery.

The concept began with a series of conversations between Chaumette owner, Hank Johnson, and Dr. Joseph Sharlow of Ste. Genevieve, who owns Toni’s Medical Aesthetics and Day Spas.

General Manager Sandra Cabot said they shared a vision about a world-class destination spa as a unique attraction for wine lovers and overnight guests of the Villages of Chaumette which is currently under development. Johnson has leased the spa to Dr. Sharlow.

The 4,500 square foot spa will have a grand opening in January. Currently, the spa is open Friday through Sunday.

Guests may choose from a variety of spa treatments including body wraps and scrubs, facials, massages, manicures and pedicures. There’s a spa sanctuary for relaxing before the services. There, customers can drink wine, water or herbal tea.

There’s private massage rooms or couple’s massage suites. There’s a far infrared sauna system by Sunlight Saunas. The spa has deluxe pipe-free pedicure spas.

Still under construction are a heated pool, pool-side cabanas, men’s and women’s locker rooms, a small exercise room and a restaurant, which will be similar to Grapevine Grill, with outdoor seating on the deck that wraps around the spa building. Eventually, there will also be a wellness provider for care such as guided hypnosis.

Cabot said Belle Haven is the only spa in the Midwest to offer facial and massage treatments which incorporate skincare products by Caudalie. She said the products are all based on the grape, vine and wine — the aroma and the antioxidants. The “vinotherapy” treatments are designed to balance, restore, and protect the skin against signs of premature aging.

Body wraps and scrubs start at $90. Spa facials range from $85 to $165. Massages are $95 for one hour. Manicures are $55 and pedicures are $65. They also do gentle soy-based hair removal. Then, there’s a bunch of specialty services from eyelash tinting and lash perming to permanent cosmetics. They also do bridal parties and mini-makeovers.

Spa treatments may be purchased in spa packages like “Couple’s Escape” or “Vineyard Bliss.” The Vineyard Bliss is $350. The package includes the spa facial best suited for your skin type, your choice of a Hot Stone or Swedish massage with aromatherapy, manicure/pedicure, 30 minutes of basking in the far infrared sauna suite, your choice of a spa lunch or an appetizer selection prepared just for you, and a $50 spa credit.

The development is ongoing and several villas should be complete and ready for rent by early spring.

According to the Chaumette Web site, Johnson is currently building 26 residential units in 14 separate buildings. The plan is to make it seem like a French colonial town from the 1780s — architecturally. The costs start at about $200,000 with a $210 monthly maintenance fee. Of course, they can recoup some of those costs by renting the units.

Those staying there will have access to the spa, swimming pool, and exercise room. They will have the opportunity to make their own wine if they want to rent a row or more of grapes in the vineyard. $$

There is the Alayne White Spa and Body Boutique (149 Elmgrove Ave, Providence). Alayne White Spa and Body Boutique focuses on making you feel comfortable. On her website, Alayne White posts a blurb quoting herself in Vogue Magazine saying, “The average woman is discovering it’s not a luxury to feel better about herself.” That’s a wonderful attitude to have for a spa owner. It is not over-the-top, but it prides itself on being small and intimate. So if you are looking to really relax and get away from the stress of too much shopping or too much work or too many people, scale down and chill out at Alayne White Spa. You can prepay for five visits and then the sixth one is free. This is specially a great place for vacationers to go, because the staff will help you make reservations at restaurants and other places that you might be interested in checking out.

 

Chesnuts Salon and Day Spa (10 Davol Square) is located in downtown Providence and is a hip place for the young and restless. With exposed brick, leather chairs and a loft-like feel, it brings an energy that can be a great boost when you feel bored or lethargic. It is also a comfortable place for male clients, so if you or one of your male friends secretly wants the spa treatment but feels a little shy or embarrassed, this is the place to go. Call ahead for treatment; it has a lot of fans. There is also valet parking available Wednesday through Friday (it is closed on Sundays and Mondays).

 

Providence’s Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa (Providence Biltmore, 11 Dorrance St) is one of about 30 spas run by the company throughout the US. This is where you go if you want to feel like a superstar. You will have to pay for valet parking and a 20% gratuity is included for all services, but it delivers a lot for your money. Reserve your appointment online and get there early so that you can enjoy a coffee, biscotti and juice provided while you wait. In the winter, there is skating nearby, so plan to go get some fresh air and exercise and then warm up and relax inside the two story luxurious spa.

 

If you are someone that feels more comfortable going out with your significant other, then try Spadyssey Day Spa’s (75 Dorrance St) “two’s company massage”.  Its décor is generally described as comfortable, but the spas regulars talk much more about the great massages from the staff than anything else. At the Ritz-Carlton Dallas, a sense of well-being enfolds you like a fluffy robe the moment you step off the elevator and into the second-floor spa, 12,000 square feet of world-class stress relief. Only-in-Dallas options include the Texas Eight-Hand Massage and Dean’s (as in Fearing) Margarita Salt Glow. But the ayurveda-inspired Shirodhara Journey, in which a continuous stream of warmed sesame oil flows onto your forehead and into your hair, transports you much, much farther, just this side of nirvana. We also couldn’t resist an Intraceuticals Oxygen Infusion treatment, which the technician explained pumps vitamins, low-weight hyaluronic acid and antioxidants into the skin via “topical hyperbaric oxygen technology.” The midsession reveal — treated side rosy, plump and lifted; untreated side not so much — instantly explained why Madonna has a system in each of her three homes and gets a 30-minute infusion before each performance. The news at Mokara Salon & Spa, which opened just last month at the Omni Mandalay in Las Colinas, is that it’s No. 1 — the first in a series of full-service spas going into Omni Hotels across North America. What future locations won’t have is a reception room with a two-story glass window overlooking the Las Colinas canal. But they will share Mokara’s green-conscious finish-out (cork and bamboo flooring) and emphasis on sharing. “Unlike other spas that want you to find inner peace, we want you to find inner peace with a friend,” says spa director Victoria Nickle. Fans of Aveda Lifestyle Salons (Dallas fave Avalon just opened its fifth location, in Victory Park’s LFT) will no doubt enjoy more plant-and-flower-based pampering at Hiatus Spa and Retreat. Co-owners and self-described spa junkies Kristin Heaton and Sheila Garrison offer a membership system, “so that going for a massage or facial isn’t viewed as a luxury, but maintenance, like belonging to a health club or yoga studio,” says Heaton. H-circle members pay $49 to $69 to receive one core spa service each month. With approximately 4,700 available appointments each month, Heaton notes, “you can almost always call and get in that day.”

Ready for Reiki?.

“You may hear me flick my fingers or clap my hands after I finish an area,” says Manonne Fontainne to the skeptical client (me) lying face-up on a massage table at Hotel ZaZa’s ZaSpa. “You may feel a tingling on the crown of your head or tip of your nose, or even a jolt.”

Fontainne, a petite blonde with a lilting accent I wrongly assumed to be French (she’s Hungarian), is a certified master of Reiki. The restorative technique, developed in the early 20th century by a Japanese Buddhist monk, is based on the principle of “universal life force energy,” which practitioners believe can be rebalanced by hovering their hands over different areas of a client’s body – a touchless massage. I’m skeptical, though pleasantly relaxed, until Fontainne’s hovering hands reach my left hip, at which point the top of my head feels a strong electric tingle. “Ahhh,” she breathes, almost as if the prickle were visible. After 50 minutes under her hands, I’m as relaxed as a cat sleeping in sunshine.

THE BEAUTY DOCTOR IS IN

Good skin care and good genes can only take you so far. That’s where aesthetic medicine comes in. “We’re not derms, and we’re not plastics. It’s really a brand-new field,” says Lynley McAnalley, whose practice near Preston Center gets a steady stream of shop owners, hairstylists and (yes) fashion editors. Board-certified in family medicine with 10 years’ E.R. experience, McAnalley now focuses strictly on aesthetics, with a micro-specialty in injectibles. The field’s tipping point, she says, was when Botox Cosmetic received FDA approval in 2001, followed by a wave of non-animal-based dermal fillers – Restylane, Radiesse, Sculptra et. al. – for restoring volume and smoothing creases and folds.

McAnalley isn’t the only hot doc to switch gears from traditional to aesthetic medicine, or whose name comes up among the chic who don’t mind sharing. Vinita Schroeder, board-certified in pediatrics and allergy and immunology, still sees allergy patients in her Park Cities clinic on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but devotes Mondays and Wednesdays to treatments such as IPL photofacials and mesolift skin rejuvenations. Jason Riehs gave up internal medicine to open Le Beau Visage in Frisco, overseeing a staff of three aestheticians and attracting clients ranging from chic suburbanites to heart-of-Dallas A-gays. Riehs administers all injectibles himself and proudly notes: “We’re ‘platinum status’ in both Botox and Restylane, which means we do a lot of it.”

The fact that all three docs are themselves gorgeous doesn’t hurt. Says one male McAnalley devotee, “I always tell her, ‘Do whatever you want, just make me look exactly like you.’ “

Like everything else, facials are getting pricier. Twenty-year vet Renée Rouleau, who opens a by-appointment-only skin-care satellite at One Arts Plaza this month, has developed Synergy 7 – a facial that rolls seven anti-aging technologies and treatments into one hour-and-a-half session. Price? A cool $600, or $675 if Rouleau herself lays on hands. Meanwhile, Luxury on Lovers is one of the first salons in the country to offer the 24-Karat Gold Facial, a proprietary treatment pioneered by Japan-based UMO Inc. that incorporates actual gold leaf. Believers say gold’s anti-inflammatory properties help fine lines and reduce sun damage and pigmentation. But even if the $298 treatment is more shine than substance, you’ll still come away glowing.
