Pampering in Paradise

Hawaii’s spas have raised the art of relaxation and healing to a new level. The traditional Greco-Roman-style spas have evolved into airy, open facilities that embrace the Tropics. Spa-goers in Hawaii want to hear the sound of the ocean, smell the salt air, and feel the caress of the warm breeze. They want to experience Hawaiian products and traditional spa treatments they can get only here.

Today’s spas offer a wide diversity of treatments. Massage options include Hawaiian lomilomi, Swedish, aromatherapy, craniosacral (massaging the head), shiatsu (no oil, just deep thumb pressure on acupuncture points), Thai (another oilless massage involving stretching), and hot stone. There are even side-by-side massages for couples, and duo massages — two massage therapists working on you at once.

Body treatments, for the entire body or just the face, involve a variety of herbal wraps, masks, or scrubs using a range of ingredients from seaweed to salt to mud, with or without accompanying aromatherapy.

After you have been rubbed and scrubbed, most spas offer an array of water treatments — a sort of hydromassage in a tub with jets and an assortment of colored crystals, oils, and scents.

Those are just the traditional treatments. Most spas also offer a range of alternative healthcare like acupuncture and chiropractic, and more exotic treatments like ayurvedic and siddha from India or reiki from Japan. Some offer cutting-edge treatments, like the Grand Wailea Resort’s full-spectrum color-light therapy pod (based on NASA’s work with astronauts).

Day Spas also offer a range of fitness facilities (weights, racquetball, tennis, golf) and classes (yoga, aerobics, spinning, tai chi, kickboxing). Several even offer adventure fitness packages (from bicycling to snorkeling). For the less active, most spas have salons dedicated to hair and nail care.

Of course, all this pampering doesn’t come cheap. Massages are generally $150 to $250 for 50 minutes and $250 to $295 for 80 minutes; body treatments are in the $150-to-$250 range; and alternative healthcare treatments can be as high as $200 to $300. But you may think it’s worth the expense to banish your tension and stress.

The Dead Sea a Place of Healing There and Here

Dead_Sea_Miracle_Minerals.png

This article is brought to you by Spavelous.com.

http://www.spavelous.com

If you go to the Dead sea, this article will provide you with some good information.  If that is not in your budget, just visit your local spa and enjoy a dead sea mud treatment.

The Dead Sea: Place of healing

The lowest place on Earth is tops in health tourism

EIN GEDI, Israel - Southeast of Jerusalem, past fields of date palms, majestic Judean Desert mesas, a couple of security checkpoints and, if you’re lucky, some goat-herding Bedouins sits one of the must-see destinations for any tourist in Israel. Glistening beneath a sun that shines about 330 days a year is the Dead Sea, the lowest place on Earth, which happens to also be one of the highest when it comes to restorative value.

The healing and therapeutic powers of its miracle mineral-rich water - estimated to be as much as 10 times saltier than the ocean - combined with the dry and highly oxygenated air, heat, lack of pollution and low atmospheric pressure make this place tops in health tourism. People from across the globe take trips (sometimes on health-insurance dimes) to treat skin conditions, such as psoriasis, and other maladies including arthritis or bronchial ailments. Plenty of Israelis make regular visits as part of their wellness plans.

Given its salinity, there’s a famous buoyancy to this sea. The most popular photos taken by tourists include the ones of people comfortably kicking back while reading a newspaper, floating effortlessly. Even the nonswimmer can enjoy this oddest of sensations.

Though it does the body good, there are dangers in these waters. You don’t know sting until you’ve gotten the Dead Sea in your eyes or a cut. Watch out for the visitor who races from the water for a frantic freshwater
It’s not just about the seawater, though. The thermal sulfur pools from mineral springs may stink and the vats of mud - meant to be slathered on and baked in the sun - might cause the squeamish to cringe, but step right in for a soak and play like a kid.

There are plenty of stopping points along the shoreline, from simple beaches to places like the Ein Gedi Spa, where visitors can treat themselves to services such as massages and facials, or lounge around a freshwater pool if the salt becomes too much. And while all of this is tripworthy on its own, there’s plenty else going on in the region: first-class hikes and historical and religious treasures.

Bordered by Israel and the West Bank on one side and Jordan on the other, the Dead Sea, which is fed by the Jordan River, is about 40 miles long. But the shores are receding each year, at a rate of about three feet annually, as incoming water - in a part of the world where water is gold - is now largely being diverted elsewhere by Israel, Syria and Jordan.

Efforts have been taken to find ways to save the Dead Sea, among them a proposed “Two Seas Canal,” which would pump water from the Red Sea’s Gulf of Aqaba in Jordan - and at the southern tip of Israel - into the Dead Sea. This idea was born out of an exploratory agreement signed in May 2005 by Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority.

But concerns - environmental, political and archaeological - are keeping this at bay. As is the case with so much in the Middle East, solutions don’t come easy.

Some tips for Dead Sea dips

Drink lots of water and be prepared for the sun and heat.
Though it’s harder to get sunburned at 1,370 feet below sea level, it’s not impossible: Wear sunscreen.

If you have any cuts, know that the water will make them sting. The bigger the wound, the bigger the pain. For this reason, hold off on shaving till after your float.
Wear water shoes, if you have them, as the salt deposits on the sea floor and shores can be jagged.

Don’t splash or attempt to full-on swim. This is not water you want in your mouth or eyes.
Float on your back, read a paper if you like and simply relax.

Hot Springs Day Spa Attractions and Attivities

Attractions and activities abound in nearby Spa City

Hot Springs is Arkadelphia’s next door neighbor. The fun-filled city has a lot to offer to residents and tourist, but for college students, it’s a blessing.

Many agree that if it weren’t for Hot Springs, college life in Arkadelphia wouldn’t be as entertaining.

“I like to go up there and get away from the school work every once in a while,” sophomore mass media major Cameron Soils said.

“I work at Wendy’s and at the on-campus radio station on top of going to school, so I do it big when I can in the Springs.”

According to HotSprings.org, Hot Springs is America’s first resort and one of the south’s most popular family vacation and convention destination spots.

It has attractions for all ages and interest.

Hot Springs has everything - from an alligator farm and petting zoo for the little ones to luxurious day spas and salons for older tourists.

“I like to go and get a message every so often because it’s very relaxing,” senior early childhood education major Brittany Stuart said.

Ablution Day Spa and Salon is one of the many spas in Hot Springs. They offer four levels of comfort and sit on 4,500 square feet.

REVIEW THIS SPA NOW

The first level consists of things such as facials and cellulite reduction.

The second level offers body messages and body wraps.

The third and fourth levels include a full grooming of hair and nails.

Not only is Hot Springs a place to relax, but is also a place to learn.

The Belle of Hot Springs Riverboat is a 300-passenger riverboat where tourist can pay to float through beautiful Lake Hamilton as they listen to the captain talk about the “spa city.”

The tour includes a historical outlook of the city, along with colorful anecdotes and views of natural islands, the Ouachita Mountains, million-dollar mansions.

“You get a good view of the mountains going to Hot Springs from Arkadelphia,” junior physical education major Dionte Davis said.

There’s also a theme park for families to go to and have a fun- filled day.

Magic Springs Theme Park is also a water park, so when fun-seeking families do go to the park, it’s twice the thrills and twice the fun.

The good thing about that is you pay for one ticket to have access to both parks.

Shopping plays a big role in Hot Spring’s reputation.

There is Hot Springs Mall, where you and the family can shop till you drop at a variety of major retailers.

Other shopping stores, such as Beverly’s Casual Shop, Arlington Hotel Mall, Memorabilia-N-More and many other stores are located throughout Hot Springs.

The hardest thing about shopping and attractions in Hot Springs is trying not to spend all your money on the great things Hot Springs has to offer. It can be a hard task, but it would be a task well worth it.

Camp Day Spa - Young Girls Spa Experience - Spa Education

Girls will get the low-down at Camp Day Spa

Nothing goes together quite like young girls and make-up. But how young is too young for make-up? How do you know that you are teaching your daughter the best techniques for make-up application? What about all other forms of personal hygiene and self-care? Valerian Day Spa of Reedsburg has the answers to these problems.

This summer the spa will be holding its first annual Camp Day Spa. This is a day long workshop intended to teach girls ages 8 to 14 about proper care for their growing and changing bodies. Topics covered throughout the day will include brow shaping, proper skincare, nail maintenance and aromatherapy. In addition, product kits and healthy snacks will be provided throughout the day. Participants will also give and receive manicures and pedicures. This is the first workshop of its kind in the area, although similar events are found at many Hollywood spas.

Valerian Day Spa owner Andrea Bronk was inspired to organize the camp after establishing a school morning routine with her own six year old daughter. Bronk wanted to find a way to teach her daughter age appropriate care for herself. She had also been approached by mothers who patronized the spa asking questions in regards to their growing girls. Parents, who may still be using grandma’s old skincare recipes, want to know the best way to teach their children proper self-care.

Research illustrates that many teenage girls do not understand personal health care. In a recent study by the Vagisil Women’s Health Center only 58 percent of girls considered themselves “somewhat knowledgeable” about personal care. This workshop is an opportunity for kids to learn healthy skills from professionals in the field. Bronk says this is an awesome opportunity to explain the true facts of self-care and dispel some old wive’s tales and nasty myths. “It will be fun — not health class,” she said.

The workshop is aimed at those kids who are starting to experience hormonal issues and changes. Puberty is often a time when kids feel a drop in their self-esteem. In American society only two percent of women consider themselves beautiful. One in three teens is bullied everyday. Furthermore, nearly 70 percent of teenage girls have admitted to avoiding normal activities such as going to school or even voicing their opinion because they felt bad about their looks. However, one of the ways to combat low self-esteem is to provide a positive, honest and supportive approach to dealing with body image and overall health. Valerian’s Camp Day Spa aims to do exactly that.

Valerian’s Camp Day Spa will take place on Wednesday, June 18, Wednesday, July 16 and Wednesday, Aug. 13. The workshop runs from 8:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The registration fee is $130. For more information call 608-768-1SPA.

If this workshop goes well Bronk said she would like to expand its program, beginning with making the camp a yearly event. “We are working with local resorts to help spread the word,” she said. “We would also like to host more workshops.

Elements Spa and Salon is part of the Beauty Collection, the cosmetics and skin care product mecca at The Farmers Market. Element’s specialize in salon services for men and women, and also offers facials, waxing and body treatments. One benefit of visiting a beauty salon that’s attached to a comprehensive upscale beauty supply story is that your aesthetician has a virtually limitless selection of product lines to choose from, making it easy to find the potions best suited to your complexion.

After we had grabbed some water and a decaf vanilla latte from the dizzying array of hot coffee beverages available, Rosalina got us settled in a treatment room. For our customized facial, she used products from several different lines, including Dermalogica and Dr. Brandt, and focused her efforts on hydration. Rosalina started with a very gentle cleanser and exfoliant, and then massaged the face and décolleté with aloe vera gel in preparation for extractions (which were surprisingly painless). Next came a deeply hydrating masque, and then more layers of moisturizer. The entire treatment was quite pleasant; it never felt particularly intense. That’s why we were surprised at just how fabulous our skin looked afterward – we had the youthful, radiant glow that we’ve come to expect from more concentrated anti-aging skin care treatments. The price was right, too: Elements’ facials start at just $75 for one hour.

Spa Tips for People with Alergies

Allergic Girl’s Spa-Goer Tips

I love spa treatments as much as the next chica, but I don’t love feeling itchy, sneezy, or wheezy during (or after) them, when I’m supposed to be in a supreme state of relaxation. Here are some steps this Allergic Girl follows when heading to the day spa.

1. Call ahead. If you have allergies to foods, perfumes, lotions–anything, really–call ahead before making that spa appointment and speak to management. Tell them your allergies, your needs, and ask what kinds of products they use. If they give you a hard time, go somewhere else: It’s your treatment, not theirs.

2. Become a label sleuth. Before going into that little room, ask to see the spa’s product line. Read the labels. Once in the room, ask your aesthetician to show you her bottles of the goop. My lovely waxer at Bliss Spa knows the whole drill. (Her child has allergies too, so she gets it.) If there’s something you can’t use or are allergic to, speak up! This is your treatment, not theirs. (Sensing a theme here?)

3. BYO. If your allergies are severe and plentiful, bring your own lotions, creams, oils, nail polish–whatever you need to in order to ensure that you will have a relaxing, allergy-free experience. I did this recently in Bermuda at the Mandarin Oriental’s Spa at Elbow Beach, where they were happy to use my small bottles of fragrance-free oil and lotion.

4. Even the nonallergic can get allergic. At the wonderful Standard Hotel in South Beach, my friend was offered a free herbal bath. She become a human teapot, soaking in a tub of hot water as staff members added a human-size tea bag full of herbal goodies and then let her steep. About five minutes into the bath, my friend started to turn pink. She thought maybe the water was too warm. Later, she had wine with dinner and that’s what did it: herbs + liquor = red, blotchy, and itchy all-over allergic reactions. We alerted the staff, who exclaimed, “This never happens!” But, dear ones, it does. Just because you aren’t an allergic girl doesn’t mean you can’t get allergic.

REVIEW THIS SPA NOW

Sometimes, a haven away from home is necessary, especially if you’re plagued by officious roommates, a couch-potato significant other, or a floor plan that pretty much precludes luxurious lounging. Getting a facial or massage while you’re at it doesn’t hurt, either. Enter Marion Pernoux Henderson, the lovely, astonishingly grounded proprietress of Ensoma Spa.

So you say you’ve become chary of the one-size-fits-all, clock-watching mentality that suffuses most establishments with the word “spa” affixed to them. A date with Marion’s hands is in tall order, then. And that’s not just because of the oodles of personalized attention you’ll get from this hidden luminary and Jill-of-all Trades–who waxes, exfoliates, and soothes ergonomically tortured limbs back to tip-top condition like it’s no one’s business–it’s also because Ensoma is the kind of congenial, unpretentious space where you can kick off your shoes and, very likely, take a teeny post-pampering catnap.

Sure, you have to walk through blocks of concrete jungle before arriving at the unassuming loft space (which doesn’t have so much as a placard on the door, making the sojourn that much more satisfying given the surreptitious hiding spot), but the contrast between Ensoma and the sidewalk just outside is immense — especially considering Marion’s finical eye for aesthetic details. Forget the sterile bliss of your typical spa. Sun-kissed hardwood floors, artfully placed black-and-white photographs, cushy slabs of minimalist-inspired seating, succulent potted plants, filmy curtains, occasional video projections (Godard, anybody?), and trays of delectable snacks are just some of the treats at Ensoma.

Aside from the chic, homey digs, a visit to Marion’s lair leaves little to be desired. For about four years — amid gigs at major spas – Marion has been applying her own uniquely holistic method of beautifying and bliss-making, one client at a time. Most of her takers pop in for a combo of services — waxing, facial, and massage — and unlike other multi-tasking therapists who tend to be better at one thing, Marion’s equally adept at extractions and alleviating chronic pain. Given her “bodywork/and skincare as healing” raison d’etre, she’s one of those therapists who harks back to the days when your beautician was also your sworn confidante. Simply put, she puts you at ease. The combination of, say, a Brazilian (aided by Marion’s pain-curtailing hard wax) and her endlessly soothing demeanor is almost akin to a long session of yoga.

When I visited Marion, it was for some seriously purr-inducing bodywork and skincare. While she uses a plethora of bodywork modalities–from Shiatsu to Swedish to Thai to regular ol’ deep tissue–there’s a huge emphasis on customizing, in accordance with what her clients need rather than what they want. This means you don’t get to point to a menu of services and choose what’ll be done to you–all you need to do is surrender to Marion’s intuitive knowledge, lie back, and enjoy. As Marion tapped out a distinct rhythm over my achey back and shoulders (always reminding me to breathe, natch), I was roused by the fact that the lightness of her touch was complemented by its depth. I’m not sure if this had to do with her knowledge of pressure points or simply her focus on “encouraging energetic interactions and supporting psychosomatic awareness,” but the session definitely reminded me to make a mental note to give referrals to the chronic-pain complainers in my life.

Marion’s facials — also administered to the accompaniment of aromatherapy and the same eclectic mix of music softly wafting from the speakers — are similarly effective. Using a variety of products ranging from organic blends to clinical-grade formulas for problem skin, Marion customizes all her facials, offering everything from nourishment for dehydrated skin to zit-zapping potions for acneic visages. Her choice skincare lines include Japanese line Pangea Organics, the delectable chocolate and shea butter offerings of Aquadessa, 100% Pure, and Ideal essential oils, which are hand-crafted by San Francisco-based Ayurvedic expert Marie Bourdier. A plethora of warm towels, yummy botanical cleansers and lotions, cucumber slices, and eye pillows were applied with the utmost fastidiousness. An oxygen mask swathed onto my face pre-extractions opened up my stubborn pores and made the subsequent picking-away at dead skin cells surprisingly bearable. Of course, as I emerged from the warm cocoon that is Ensoma, I was hardly taken aback when strangers complemented my ethereal glow. The thing that really surprised me was that I’d spent over three hours getting thoroughly pampered, without nary a sense of the time that had passed.

At press time, dozens of stress-addled clients are guilty for keeping Marion a well-kept secret from spa-sters on the hunt for great brows and a little R&R, but the word is quickly trickling out (psst…Ensoma’s the perfect anodyne, girl!) well beyond the confines of her makeshift urban oasis. Of course, if Marion’s looking for roommates, I’m calling dibs.
