New York Day Spa Offers Botox and Facial for the Pits

Shizuka New York, the day spa that introduced bird poop facials to Manhattan, offers the Underarm Overhaul that combines underarm botox for sweat reduction with an underarm “facial” and underarm waxing, just in time for summer heat waves. Botox cosmetic was approved by the FDA in 2004 for treating severe underarm sweat (hyperhidrosis) and has quickly become a celebrity beauty secret for preventing embarrassing armpit sweating and staining.

Manhattan aesthetician Shizuka Bernstein and plastic surgeon Robert Silich, M.D. have collaborated to create The Underarm Overhaul ($1500 at the Shizuka New York Day Spa, a comprehensive underarm treatment that deep cleans the underarms, removes unwanted hair, and significantly reduces sweat for up to 6 months.

Botox Cosmetic was approved by the FDA for hyperhidrosis (severe underarm sweating) in 2004. Since then, it has quickly become a celebrity beauty secret for keeping dry under the bright red carpet lights. This special technique of Botox injection, also known as Intradermal Botox, works by targeting sweat glands beneath the surface of the underarm skin rather than facial expression muscles.

“Botox is a safe and effective solution for anyone with average to severe underarm sweating,” Silich says. “My patients find that it’s a convenient way to make New York City summers more bearable.”
Prior to Dr. Silich’s Botox injections, Shizuka Bernstein and her staff give the underarms a cleansing “facial.” The armpits are given a thorough steam cleaning using the Shizuka New York Skincare System, her original line of products. “You can even get clogged pores in your armpits,” Bernstein told

New York Magazine (Intelligencer, 6/9/2008). Her skin care products used in the armpits combine innovative natural ingredients including sake, whole plant mushroom extract, rice bran, pearl protein, hops, sage and water sourced directly from Mt. Fuji.

Also included in the Underarm Overhaul is a complimentary underarm waxing using an organic soy-based wax. Clients may opt to upgrade to Intense Pulsed Light hair removal for an additional $100. Results from the

Botox typically last for 4-6 months.

As the summer heat picks up and NYC subway platforms swelter, The Underarm Overhaul is poised to bring this often neglected area from the pits to the pedestal, bringing relief to pit-stainers everywhere as well as those who just hate to sweat.

He has appeared as an expert on CNN and his work has also been featured in The New York Times, The New York Post, The Washington Post, The New York Daily News, Elle, W, Quest, Hamptons and Gotham, among others. Calling Princesses Of All Ages – Westhampton Day Spa, Westhampton Beach

REVIEW THIS SPA NOW

Located in a quaint Victorian house, the Westhampton Day Spa provides an intimate experience led by owners Holly and Joel Torres. The homey atmosphere includes several rooms for massage and facials, as well as nail care, waxing, and body treatments. Each session begins with a personalized consultation and professional skin analysis. Treatments sound good enough to eat with coconut scrubs, fruit enzymes peels, and liquid sugar polishes. While you’re there experiment with an add on such as a lavender hand facial, a mango eye treatment to reduce puffiness and dark circles, or a breast firming treatment where a unique masque boosts elasticity (at least for a while).

The Westhampton Signature Massage is the Pu Pu platter of rubbing where you experience Swedish strokes, aromatherapy, heated basalt stones, and a touch of oriental techniques that encourage your natural healing abilities. Joel is famous for his skill at shiatsu and thai massage.

Realizing you’re never too young to develop good spa skills, they offer Princess Parties for six to eight children who can get a little taste of everything – hair, nails, massage, and facial. They also offer the “First Make-Up” for teens fifteen and under where they teach a light technique to enhance natural beauty. Groups such as bridal parties, corporate retreats, and couples also like to take over the space where they will set a menu of treatments that also includes lunch.

In the summer season they have a satellite location at the Bath and Tennis Hotel at 231 Dune Road in Westhampton Beach where you can get a massage outside and listen to the sounds of the waves or experience a facial in the cabana tent. With the spa package you also get use of the resort’s beach and heated pools. Beware of spontaneous serendipity. They also have a frequent spa-er card where after a series of five facials, massages, or nail treatments, you get the sixth one free. If you’re a snowbird, keep an eye for their new spa in Naples, Florida next year.

Signature Treatment: “Essensa Euro-Stone Facial”

This is better than a giant Valium. Lymphatic drainage massage helps to eliminate toxins and relieve sinus pressure, headaches, eye puffiness, or TMJ. The face, neck, and hands are lightly massaged with heated stones and essential oils. After the cleanse, steam, and exfoliation, the Essensa organic masks, such as the anti-stress rose mask, from France are applied. Heated and chilled stones are applied to key Ayurvedic pressure points and chakras to open and ground energy. Your feet are treated to reflexology to clarify the mind and balance your system. Sounds like a recipe for world peace to me.

Closed on Tuesdays – Bath and Tennis location open in the summer season. Westhampton Day Spa, 64 Old Riverhead Road, Westhampton Beach, 631-288-4900

“Plaisir des Senses” Ananas Spa

REVIEW THIS SPA NOW

The Secrets Of European Women Revealed – Ananas Spa, Southampton

The Ananas Spa’s goal is inspired by Baudelaire, “Luxe, calm et voluptue,” all of which permeate their stylish boutique bathed in soothing colors and serenaded by a relaxing Roman water fountain. Combining international expertise with a line of French beauty products, Ananas will be happy to let you in on their secrets. With an average of 15 years experience their nail technicians, massage therapists, certified endermologist, and aestheticians for face and body can treat you to anything from a temporary tattoo to the “Brisa” Forever French manicure. Sign me up, s’il vous plait. Joanne is your gal for the ultimate in the mani-pedi-waxing world with 23 years under her extra smooth emery board and dedicated clientèle (if you say pretty please she will even make house calls). Even if you have terrible nails she can reveal the Netherlands secret – Trind – for building strong nails in two weeks.

With the bio-botanical line Yon ka, you can see marine and herbal extracts work their magic in the Zone Minceur treatment which targets cellulite or the Phyto Marine, a body contour slimming treatment, or the Silhouette Detox. Treat your slimmed self to a spray on tan and you have instant St. Tropez. And treat all of your senses, even your sixth, to the soothing Plaisir Des Sens facial. Inga starts with your back to relax you with hot towels, moisturizing lotion, and a yang massage with warm volcanic stones. Your face, neck, and shoulders come in and get the same, with gentle relaxing strokes. After the mild exfoliation and steam the clay masque tickles the nose with scents of pamplemousse (that’s grapefruit to us), then an aromatherapy masque including lavender and rosemary. Your chakras are next, energy points have colored crystals placed along them like rose quartz and amethyst for grounding and healing. Then sink into a quiet meditation….Ahhhh.

Putting hospitality back in the Hamptons, Ananas is never crowded – even when it’s fully booked. They are about quality not quantity. You are invited to luxuriate in their tranquility room or browse their incredible gift shop that puts together unique custom baskets for everyone with fragrant products from around the world. Ananas’ other spectacular secret is their private yoga studio that offers daily 9:30 a.m. yoga classes Monday through Saturday and a Saturday 12 noon Pilates mat class with no more than six students. Be sure to R.S.V.P. if you’re interested in attending.

Off-Season they’re offering a 10 percent discount on Sundays and Tuesdays on most services. Whatever tickles your fancy, experience your own joie de vie.

Signature Treatment: “Four Hand Moon Shower Body Treatment”

From the Columbian Chibcha Indians comes this ancient ritual reserved for their daughters on the night before their weddings. Two technicians will scrub you with brown sugar and Jamu Thai Oil, then wrap you in a mask of strawberries, peaches, rose petals, pineapple, cinnamon, yogurt, and a touch of red wine while four hands massage your scalp and feet as your hands are bathed in paraffin. No runaway brides here – they’ll be too blissed out.

Open seven days a week from Jan. 1 to April 1. Ananas Spa, 71 Hill Street, Southampton, 631-287-9099

New York Spa Services / Mobile Massager / Cornelia

This article is brought to you by Spavelous.com.

“Trying to get an appointment at the Face Place or Cornelia is like negotiating with the hostess at the Waverly Inn,” said Celia Chen, the editor in chief of Notesonaparty.com, a new online magazine about entertaining. “Now you have to name-drop or say who your clients are just so you can get an appointment. Spas are supposed to be relaxing.”

But they aren’t always. Not when haughty employees enforce strict policies about clients’ behavior. Not when appointments have to be confirmed a day ahead, or else. Not even in the candlelit waiting lounge where strangers in bathrobes avoid eye contact.

To ease her overworked muscles on her terms, Ms. Chen, 34, made an online reservation with Refresh Body, a new mobile spa company in New York.

The practitioner she chose after browsing the biographies of 12 employees came to her home in Greenwich Village toting 300-thread-count sheets, Egyptian cotton towels, a bolster and a massage table. To help recreate the spa experience, he microwaved moist towels for her face and back.

Ms. Chen’s favorite part was the simple privacy of being treated at home. “I like being able to relax with a glass of wine while turning everything off,” she said.

Self-employed massage therapists have lugged their folding tables to the homes of clients for years. And aestheticians offering basic manicures at home have been around since at least 2003. But now a bevy of treatments as specialized as Thai banana-leaf glycerin wraps are available from practitioners who make house calls. Spa regulars, who are frustrated with getting a dose of attitude, rather than serenity, are retreating to their living rooms.

“Spas have become additional stresses,” said Maggie Gallant, 28, the founder of Spotlight Communications in Manhattan, who used to visit a spa for deep-tissue massages, manicures and pedicures every few weeks. “The last time I tried making an appointment I was put on hold for over 15 minutes and told they were booked for two weeks. I’ve been rushed out of my treatment room, charged for items I didn’t agree to and penalized financially for canceling too last-minute. I’ve never had any of those issues with mobile spas.”

Convenience often entices at-home clients. “My staff will travel up to a 70-mile radius,” said Mindy Davis, the owner of Peels on Wheels in Los Angeles. “Depending upon your treatment, whether you’re having a facial, a waxing, lash extensions or a massage, we’ll bring sheets, blankets, robes, slippers, magazines, music, scented candles and aromatherapy oil.”

Mobile spa treatments generally cost more than visiting a day spa, but not as much as some might fear.

This kind of accommodation isn’t surprising to industry professionals. “What we’re seeing is another extension of the customized, personalized, ‘me spa’ trend,” said Mary Bemis, the editor in chief of Organic Spa Magazine.

These days many women and men will gladly trade a spa’s post-treatment sauna and steam room for the convenience of showering at home. There is something wonderfully appealing about taking a nap at home after reflexology.

At-home spa services are new enough that no industrywide statistics exist, but the market is growing. In just a year, Ms. Davis of Peels on Wheels has seen her business increase 70 percent, she said, and she has hired eight employees to make 25 to 30 house calls daily. In the last five months, the clientele of Refresh Body has doubled to 600, said Mark Brycman, the president, who in the summer moved his company to the Hamptons, where 80 percent of his clients vacation.

That’s not to say an at-your-fingertips service is complete Zen. You won’t hear a screaming child in another room at Bliss, the popular luxury day-spa group.

Kris Fuchs, 44, used to love her downtime at the Mandarin or Tracie Martyn, so much so that she has a masseuse to come to her four-bedroom apartment on the Upper East Side every Monday. Ms. Fuchs, a mother of two teenagers, admits that she no longer receives two hours of uninterrupted relaxation. Though there’s plenty of space in the apartment, her children still find a way to interrupt the treatment that takes place in the family room.

“The kids come in and put their homework on me while I’m on the table,” said Ms. Fuchs, an owner of Suite New York, a high-end furniture showroom. “Sometimes they joke around and massage my feet. At the spa, I’m not a mother or career person, but a woman. And you can never achieve that feeling at home with kids in the same room.”

Ms. Bemis doubts that mobile spas create ambience on par with today’s hyper-designed spas, with their hydrotherapies and lavish waiting rooms with cashmere wraps. “The spa experience can’t really be duplicated in terms of creating a sauna or whirlpool to soak in,” she said.

Today her outreach is much larger. She has 80 independent contractors who work in Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and Seattle, and her services include henna design, customized nail decals and reflexology.

Mobile services are also available outside of spa capitals like Los Angeles or Manhattan. The Bodywork Café, which was started in 2003, is a spa-on-the-go in New Hampshire that offers a Peruvian blue corn body exfoliator, a sugared lemon-peel foot treatment and a seaweed detox bath.

Challenges can still arise as the industry becomes transportable. Carting around weighty stones for hot-stone massages is not so easy. Nor is something as basic as achieving the proper lighting in someone’s kitchen.
