Family opening a medical spa downtown Lockport, NY

rejuvenere-medical-spa.png

They’re a doctor and a nurse, husband and wife and, now, business partners.

Lockport physician Dr. Richard Junke and Suzanne Junke, a registered nurse with a lengthy career at Lockport Memorial Hospital, are opening Rejuvenere Medical Spa next month at Ulrich City Centre.

The spa, in the works for over a year, is a family business anchored in reputation and roots.

“People trust Rich. I think we’ll do well just because of that,” Suzanne Junke said.

Dr. Junke has practiced family medicine for 16 years. Suzanne is equally familiar in local health care, having worked at LMH for more than 25 years in the emergency room and the surgical recovery room.

Suzanne will be the business administrator, daughter Maureen will be the receptionist and daughter Erin may take her first nursing job at Rejuvenere after she receives her degree.

“The family is coming together to work on this. It’s fun,” Richard Junke said.

Rejuvenere Medical Spa will specialize in skin rejuvenation services that Junke has been offering for several years in his High Street office, including: Botox Cosmetic and dermal filler injections; treatment of acne and precancerous skin conditions; and laser hair removal. Williamsville-based plastic surgeon Dr. Bruce Cusenz will work from the spa once a week.

Typical day spa features such as facials, massage therapy and skin care products will be offered, but the greater emphasis is on medical needs, Junke said.

Light/laser treatments and injected substances like Botox and Juvederm are considered safer, less invasive alternatives to plastic surgery, but they still require medical supervision — and that’s where he comes in. Junke plans to work a couple days a week at the spa while maintaining his practice unchanged.

“I love medicine too much to give it up,” he said. “I love my patients too much.”

It is, in fact, his patients who inspired Junke to open the medical spa, he said.
Medical treatment of acne, for instance, has patients “finding their faces look better than they have in years,” Junke said. Pre-cancerous skin conditions — brown spots, red spots or raised veins — can be eliminated with intense pulse light (IPL) therapy that also is cosmetically pleasing because it doesn’t leave scars.

With IPL, he said, “We’re getting amazing results, better than I’ve seen in 16 years of practice.”

Rejuvenere appears to be entering the market intent on serving a clientele bigger than Junke’s Lockport base alone, though. Junke recently acquired a Lumenis IPL and Laser machine, which he calls the “Cadillac” of its type and says is the only one in operation in Western New York.

“It kind of separates me from the rest of the market,” Junke said. “It allows me to provide my patients the best treatments that I can.”

Junke has received some training from Dr. Mark Youssef of Santa Monica, Calif., a nationally renowned cosmetic surgeon.

Rejuvenere is set to open Nov. 6 at 80 Main St., Suite 1 (next door to YWCA Fitness Center). A grand opening celebration is planned for Nov. 10.

Health Report: Staph Fatalities May Exceed AIDS Deaths

cdc.png

CHICAGO  –  More than 90,000 Americans get potentially deadly infections each year from a drug-resistant staph “superbug,” the government reported Tuesday in its first overall estimate of invasive disease caused by the germ.

Deaths tied to these infections may exceed those caused by AIDS, said one public health expert commenting  on the new study. The report shows just how far one form of the staph germ has spread beyond its traditional hospital setting.

The overall incidence rate was about 32 invasive infections per 100,000 people. That’s an “astounding” figure, said an editorial in Wednesday’s Journal of the American Medical Association, which published the study.

Most drug-resistant staph cases are mild skin infections. But this study focused on invasive infections — those that enter the bloodstream or destroy flesh and can turn deadly.

Researchers found that only about one-quarter involved hospitalized patients. However, more than half were in the health care system — people who had recently had surgery or were on kidney dialysis, for example. Open wounds and exposure to medical equipment are major ways the bug spreads.

In recent years, the resistant germ has become more common in hospitals and it has been spreading through prisons, gyms and locker rooms, and in poor urban neighborhoods.

The new study offers the broadest look yet at the pervasiveness of the most severe infections caused by the bug, called methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. These bacteria can be carried by healthy people, living on their skin or in their noses.

An invasive form of the disease is being blamed for the death Monday of a 17-year-old Virginia high school senior. Doctors said the germ had spread to his kidneys, liver, lungs and muscles around his heart.

The researchers’ estimates are extrapolated from 2005 surveillance data from nine mostly urban regions
considered representative of the country. There were 5,287 invasive infections reported that year in people living in those regions, which would translate to an estimated 94,360 cases nationally, the researchers said.

Most cases were life-threatening bloodstream infections. However, about 10 percent involved so-called flesh-eating disease, according to the study led by researchers at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There were 988 reported deaths among infected people in the study, for a rate of 6.3 per 100,000. That would translate to 18,650 deaths annually, although the researchers don’t know if MRSA was the cause in all cases.

If these deaths all were related to staph infections, the total would exceed other better-known causes of death including AIDS — which killed an estimated 17,011 Americans in 2005 — said Dr. Elizabeth Bancroft of the Los Angeles County Health Department, the editorial author.

The results underscore the need for better prevention measures. That includes curbing the overuse of
antibiotics and improving hand-washing and other hygiene procedures among hospital workers, said the
CDC’s Dr. Scott Fridkin, a study co-author.

The bacteria don’t respond to penicillin-related antibiotics once commonly used to treat them, partly because of overuse. They can be treated with other drugs but health officials worry that their overuse could cause the germ to become resistant to those, too.

A survey earlier this year suggested that MRSA infections, including noninvasive mild forms, affect 46 out of every 1,000 U.S. hospital and nursing home patients — or as many as 5 percent. These patients are vulnerable because of open wounds and invasive medical equipment that can help the germ spread.

Dr. Buddy Creech, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University, said the JAMA study emphasizes the broad scope of the drug-resistant staph “epidemic,” and highlights the need for a vaccine, which he called “the holy grail of staphylococcal research.”

The regions studied were: the Atlanta metropolitan area; Baltimore, Connecticut; Davidson County, Tenn.; the Denver metropolitan area; Monroe County, NY; the Portland, Ore. metropolitan area; Ramsey County, Minn.; and the San Francisco metropolitan area.

Westside Medical Spa Launches ‘Face the Day’ to Aid Battered Women

westside-medical-spa.png

Westside Medical Spa today announced the launch of “Face the Day” a program aimed at renewing the confidence of women preparing to embark on a new chapter in their lives.  Structured for women who have been victims of physical abuse, “Face the Day” has partnered with Jenesse Center Inc., in support of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

“Face the Day” developed by Dr. Rivkin of Westside Medical Spa, will directly benefit one woman from the Jenesse Center Foundation each week via a complimentary procedure.  Services offered will range from Fraxel laser skin resurfacing (to diminish the appearance of scars) to Non Surgical Rhinoplasty (to camouflage the bump of a broken nose).

Dr. Rivkin feels that the “Face the Day” program will “provide an opportunity for these women to move forward with confidence,” stating “I think removing these scars is a liberating experience for women who wake up every morning to a painful reminder in the mirror, or leave their homes wondering who recognizes the marks of abuse. I hope to help restore the self-esteem and pride in appearance of these women who have overcome a major struggle and shown a great deal of conviction.”

In conjunction with the complimentary procedures Dr. Rivkin will also donate ten percent of the proceeds of any procedure scheduled for the month of October by supporters of Jenesse Center back to the organization.  This aspect of the program is aimed at helping each organization secure the funds necessary to continue providing services in hopes of ending the cycle of domestic violence.

Give a gift but skip the wrapping

waste-free-gifts.png

The Waste Free Holidays program is back this year and looking for local businesses and organizations to participate. This annual program encourages holiday shoppers to “give experiences instead of stuff,” helping to reduce the amount of waste that goes to the landfill.

Waste Free Holidays is a regional partnership among Thurston, King and Kitsap counties, Tacoma and Seattle, and organizations/businesses that provide discounts of 15 percent to 50 percent on experiences or service gifts such as gift certificates for restaurants, theater performances, memberships, massages, rentals, spa and salon treatments, lessons, car washing and carpet cleaning.

Last year was Thurston County’s first year participating in this program, and it had nearly 60 participating businesses and organizations.  Many businesses sold large numbers of their Waste Free Holidays offers and were extremely excited about the attention this program brought during the holidays. It’s a great opportunity for local businesses and organizations to get some free advertising and help protect the environment.

Local partners (businesses) will sell an experience or service such as an event ticket, a membership or a gift certificate with a minimum 15 percent discount from Nov. 15 through Dec. 31.

The regional government partners will promote the program in a number of ways and direct consumers to the Waste Free Holidays Web site. From the site, visitors will select their region to find a list of each participating business, their discounted offer and the business Web site. Regional advertising methods will include TV commercials, newspaper and magazine ads, radio spots, newsletters, bus ads and direct mailings.

To enroll your business online, click the Thurston County link at www.wastefreeholidays.com.

And for you shoppers, did you know that Americans throw away 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than during any other comparable period in the year? The added food waste, shopping bags, packaging, wrapping paper, bows and ribbons adds up to 1 million extra tons per week to our nation’s waste stream.

So if you’re getting ready to make out your gift list, consider doing something a little different this year.

Consider giving the gift of experience.  A Spa Gift Certificate

Details of Oregon Wine Region’s First Luxury Inn, Spa Revealed at Groundbreaking Ceremony

newberg-or.png

NEWBERG, Ore., — An 85-room country estate-style inn, timeless in design and rising from a gentle hill in northeast Newberg, Ore., will provide the most luxurious accommodations in the Willamette Valley’s famed pinot noir wine region, said Alan Grainger, a principal in the Seattle design firm GGLO.

A detailed description of the inn, spa, restaurant and conference center was provided during a groundbreaking ceremony.   The development, to include 1,200 homes and a retail village, will be built over a decade. The inn, spa, restaurant and conference center are the first components and will open in late spring 2009.

During the ceremony, Mrs. Austin said the inn would be called The Allison. The Allison refers to 300-square-mile lake that briefly covered the entire Willamette Valley during the last ice age and deposited much of the rich soil that produces an abundance of fruits, nuts, berries and wine grapes. Lake Allison was named for the late Ira Allison, an Oregon State University geologist whose work helped prove the existence of the lake.

In addition to the hospitality and residential areas, the development will feature 50 acres of green spaces including recreational trails for biking and walking, wetlands, streams and a small vineyard.

Spa to Feature Indoor Waterfall
The Spa at The Allison is destined to become one of the most luxurious on the West Coast, according to Mary Arnstad of Arnstad Associates who has managed some of the leading hotels and resorts in the Pacific Northwest.  One feature will be a waterfall that will spill gently from one level to the next, creating a sense of serenity.

International spa consulting firm Health Fitness Dynamics of Pompano Beach, Fla., has been retained to provide insight on design, treatments and spa products.  In addition to deluxe treatment rooms, guests will be able to enjoy special services that may include use of natural materials from the area — berry, fruit and nut scrubs and lotions — or even wine-based treatments in recognition of the region’s world-class varietals.
Conference Center Will Hold More Than 200
