Clare Duggan, owner of Spa Essene, 339 G St., added a variety of spa treatments about a month ago to massage options already available.

Duggan said she wanted to add spa treatments for a long time but couldn’t because of space limitations. She needed room before the treatments could be initiated.

“I enjoy pampering people,” Duggan said.

Spa Essene has been open three years before being able to increase services.

Duggan added a FIR infrared sauna for therapy treatments. It can be used in combination with scrubs, wraps or massages. The treatments supplement massages.

The sauna heats the body with direct light conversion. It raises the temperature of the body only, not the surrounding air, meaning the body perspires and receives benefits of the sauna without breathing hot air.

FIR saunas dilate blood vessels and capillaries, promoting better blood circulation. Heat rids the body of toxins and metabolic wastes.

“I’m hoping it will help draw more clients using all different treatments,” Duggan said.

The spa offers essential oils, hot stones therapy, reflexology, mud wraps, herbal wraps, scrubs and specialized facials in addition to sauna treatments.

Services, she said, help rejuvenate the body. Blood circulation, exfoliation and detoxifying are goals of the various treatments.

Duggan completed her training at the National Holistic Institute in Berkeley, Calif. She has been practicing for more than 20 years.

The spa is available by appointment only. Gift certificates are available.

Stop breathe relax Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort Spa and Wellness Center

In advance of the Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort Spa and Wellness Center Open House on Nov. 18, I stepped from my car in a body full of stress and anxiety, and onto the lush, incredibly intoxicating, and beautiful 118-acre wooded property. I hurriedly marched toward a charming gazebo amid the greens, just steps from civilization. There, I encountered a “cell free and smoke free zone.” It was painful, but I switched off my BlackBerry and took a deep breath.

Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort is serious, Serious about repose. They want you to stop. Breathe. And relax.

From the grassy knoll, I was led to the beautiful, crisp, white locker rooms to slip into the softest of robes and store my stuff. The handy locker key hung from my wrist, but I didn’t notice as I walked a few flights of stairs to one of the 20 rental hot tubs that inhabit the hills of the property.

Each of the 74 rooms has its own hot tubl. The private outdoor redwood tubs are nestled between the trees and the stars depending on whether you’re soaking midday or late at night–the tubs are open until 2 a.m… Several of the tubs contain water that has healed for centuries, but other tubs–including a large rock spa known as Oasis–contain fresh water. All of the tubs, including Oasis, are inexpensive to rent by the hour ($12.50 to $15).

My soak was invigorating, and got better with each passing moment. Bubbles periodically floated up to the water’s surface as I gazed through the trees. I was one with nature clothing optional.

After I pulled myself out of the circular tub, I slipped back into my robe and

Lazily walked down to the Sycamore Treatment Center to await my massage. Lynn Thomas made sure the next hour of my life involved nothing but the fabulous aromas of orange and lemongrass as her touch guided my consciousness into another realm.

The rest of the day consisted of a short hike up to the Yoga Dome to experience a phenomenal yoga class with Rachel Simmons, who thankfully kept me “low to the ground.” Finally, I encountered the stone labyrinth on Sycamore’s property, something I had never seen or heard of–and admittedly was intimidated by. A thousand-year-old practice involves strolling through a “unicursal” of stones, in the hopes of finding that Zen moment. A nearby cairn (conical pile of stones) is just as beautiful and mysterious in its design and purpose.

After hours of self-indulgence at any proper retreat or “Spa Day,” you shouldn’t have to go far for nourishment, and Chef David McWilliam at the award-winning Gardens of Avila Restaurant on site does just that. Don’t miss his spectacular scallops on the half shell (the best I have ever had) or the decadent and perfect tiramisu.

There have been many changes to the resort itself recently. Alice Bergendorff, the new spa director, spent a decade in Las Vegas in the spa industry, and now will bring her fresh eye and ideas to Sycamore Mineral Springs. In addition, there are many new products, Spa travel packages, and upcoming events scheduled. A Christmas Story Package, running through Dec. 23, includes a two-night stay in a spa suite and two tickets to the Great American Melodrama Holiday show, among other things. A Club Rio event happening on New Year’s Eve is also in the works.

General Manager Roger Wightman says it best: “We are all about the water.”

Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort is located in the lush Avila Valley at 1215 Avila Beach Drive.

Networking moves to the hotel spa

The golf course is not the only place to do business in a casual setting. The new spot to network with colleagues and clients is the hotel spa.

According to the consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, 39 percent of the high-end hotels being planned in the United States will include spas, more than double the number five years ago. The increase is partly a result of demand from business customers, according to the firm.

For a growing number of companies, the spa is the novel choice for corporate outings. During annual sales meetings at the camera company Canon, participants wrap up several days of number-crunching and strategy brainstorming with a choice of either a golf outing or time at the spa. Over the years, the spa option has grown more popular, said Terry Markwart, a sales director for Canon.

“Golf isn’t relaxing,” he said. “It’s very competitive, and you have to get up early in the morning. It adds more to the stress.” A trip to the spa at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco two years ago gave Markwart the chance to get the kinks out of his back as well as hash out advertising strategies with colleagues.

“It’s a good chance to network and talk in a relaxed atmosphere,” he said.

Hotels say the demand for spa time among groups of business travelers is at an all-time high. “We’ve actually moved toward adding spas in virtually every one of our properties because spa usage is growing at a very rapid pace,” said Eric Terry, vice president for sales and marketing at Benchmark Hospitality International, which operates more than a dozen hotels and conference centers.

For many meeting planners, the lack of an on-site spa can be as much of a deal breaker as the lack of high-speed Internet access.

For their part, spa operators say they are finding a new customer base to try their services.

“The kind of clients we’re seeing are generally financial companies, law firms, people who would potentially be Bliss customers,” said Robyn Fishelson, brand manager for Bliss Spas, a company that has outlets in half a dozen W Hotels. Hotels also eagerly court potential spa clients because they help fill their rooms during low season.

Hospitality industry professionals say a major reason behind the growing popularity of spa networking is that the experience is no longer perceived solely as a pastime for the ladies-who-lunch set.

“There was a time when the word spa conjured up an image of facial masks and pedicures, but now I think that gender gap has been erased,” said Neil Pompan, president of the International Association of Conference Centers.

Terry Blumenstein, an independent meeting planner who helps companies plan sales conferences, said he had seen a similar shift among his clients.

“There’s definitely a change of more men not golfing and doing more spas instead,” he said.

Growing workplace stress and hectic schedules also make the promise of softly lit, aromatherapy-infused sanctuaries of calm all the more appealing. “After being in meetings for three or four days, people just want to relax,” Blumenstein said.

Anecdotally, hotel managers also say they are noticing increased interest in spas among business travelers.

“It used to be that golf was huge. Now our golf and spa revenues are competing with each other,” said Terry Bechtold, resort manager at the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa in Hollywood, Florida. He said the Diplomat’s 30,000-square-foot, or 2,800-square-meter, spa was sometimes taken over by corporate groups wanting to combine debriefing with destressing.

This year, Laura Thieme, president of the search engine marketing company Bizresearch, started a conference series called Search N Spa that combines technology education sessions with spa activities.

“I saw a need for high-level execs that really want to get more attention. It’s been an extreme hit,” she said. The two events she has held sold out quickly, and she is planning more.

Mark Gerardot, an owner of a Web site design company, said he welcomed the chance to hit the spa during participation in Bizresearch’s Search N Spa conference on Mackinac Island, Michigan, in August.

“It’s a very concentrated slice of information you have to digest. The spa part of it allows you to relax,” Gerardot said. It also allowed him to ask Thieme questions about the subject matter in an informal setting, he added.

Just as the golf course demands knowledge of certain etiquette and customs, spas have their own codes of conduct and the potential for faux pas.

7 Great Feng Shui Gifts for Holiday Giving

Feng Shui / Spa Gift Certificate / Day Spa

feng-shui-square.png

With the holidays fast approaching, I am often asked “is there such a thing as a really good Feng Shui gift?” “What should I look for when trying to purchase a great Feng Shui gift for someone special on my list?” “Is there a terrific Feng Shui gift I can give my boss?” The gift list requests go on and on.

Yes, there are numerous great Feng Shui oriented gifts that can be purchased, in many cases for quite reasonable amounts of money – gifts that continue to give all year long. However, the first thing you need to know about gift giving is the criteria or process for choosing a gift to give.

Give a Gift Your Recipient would love to Receive

Many people assume that you can simply go to a store, pick out something that you would like to give another person, buy it, wrap it and give it to them. Well, that may work for some but the secret in gift giving is in knowing what the other person would love to receive, not what you would love to give them.

There is a vast difference between these two options.

Choose all of your gifts based on knowing that the recipient would love to receive the gift you’ve chosen. For example, you may see a beautiful porcelain piece that you think would look perfect on your friend’s coffee table. But, you forget to take into consideration that your friend does not like anything even remotely resembling a knick-knack or more currently referred to as a “dustable.” All of your time, hard earned money and good intentions are wasted because, even though your friend will appreciate the thought behind the gift, she or he will certainly not appreciate your gift sitting on his or her coffee table taking up space and needing dusting every week.

Great Feng Shui Gifts

Now that you know the secret for giving the perfect gift, below are seven ideas that would make great positive energy gifts to bestow upon your family and friends.

1. Since gift giving is all about relationships, especially your relationship with the recipient, give a gift that is symbolic of a good relationship such as two tickets to a movie or the theater you can share. Or, if the recipient is a family member, parent or spouse, give a beautifully framed picture of you or you and the family or you and your spouse at a very joy filled event. If the gift is for a sweetheart you might consider a lovely double heart shaped crystal bud vase with two fresh roses in his or her favorite color and a promise to fill it once a week for the next three months.

2. Create a Money Pot as a gift. Purchase a small attractive wooden container and place into it seven US silver dollar coins. You can also use the new US gold dollar coins or if the gift is for a lady, use the US Susan B. Anthony dollar coins. This should be placed in the southeast area of the living room or an office. This makes a great personal gift or a gift for your boss. For those that like plants, a money plant or indoor lucky bamboo would also serve the same purpose.

3. Feng Shui Music can be purchased at most music stores and online. This type of music can be played anytime and anywhere. It will lift the spirits, eliminate stress and nourish the soul.

4. A Photo Album filled with years of memories is a great positive energy gift. This works best if you obtain the album ahead of time and actually put together several pages of the album with great pictures of the recipient, you and anyone else the recipient is particularly fond of. Be sure to include pictures of a few places the recipient has also traveled that were filled with wonderful memories of past joy. Leave some pages empty for adding new pictures.

5. An indoor Tabletop Water Fountain placed near the front door encourages positive welcoming energy to enter the home or office. If it is placed in the north it also energizes career and Devine spiritualness. Make sure it has a pleasant sound but not overwhelming. If it makes no sound look for another style. Sound is as important as appearance.

6. Wind Chimes that hang outside near the front door encourage great new energy to enter the home. Once again sound is as important as appearance. Do not purchase something so loud that it will annoy the neighbors or your recipient. There are many hand tuned wind chimes available in garden stores along with unique ones made out of bamboo. The bamboo has an unusually soothing sound.

7. Purchase a day or a few hours at a Day Spa to provide the recipient a wonderfully soothing relaxed few hours. This can be as simple as a pedicure and manicure gift certificate, a full body massage or an extravagant spa gift certificate that includes a year of hair styling or maintenance. This gift just keeps on giving whether it is used immediately or three months from now when it might be needed the most.

Remember the secret to gift giving – give a gift your recipient will want and love, not one you want to give. Then try any of the above great positive energy Feng Shui gifts for loved ones, friends and hostess gifts throughout the holiday season or all year long.
