There is nothing like being completely pampered from head to toe, and two women from Las Cruces decided it was time to make a giant career change and be the women to help other women feel great.

Spatini has been open in Mesilla for two years. The owners, Sherry Tegmeyer and Susie Durning, say they have always talked about a business like this one. They are both aestheticians, so skin care and pampering has always been their first love.

“I was a home builder for 15 years, so we figured if we didn’t pursue our dreams right away, it might not happen,” Tegmeyer said.

They fell in love with the property and fell in love with the name to denote the fun of a day spa, combined with the fun of the martini.

The two have created “bars” throughout their spa for nails, hair and cosmetics. They also feature an abundance of jewelry and gifts.

“People love to be pampered,” Tegmeyer said.

The pampering at Spatini includes signature skin treatments such as microdermabrasion and power regeneration.

There are also massages, body treatments, makeup and hair consultation and a little boutique shopping.

“All of this is not just for women. Wehave a number of male clients who enjoy the pampering as well,” Tegmeyer said.

The place that celebrates life’s little luxuries is looking into franchising in the future. Tegmeyer and Durning are working to spread the Spatini “love,” throughout the rest of New Mexico.

In the meantime, they are working on a special package to help create, “the new you,” for 2008, and to keep the fun in their business.

“Everyone is happy when they come here. It’s finally fun to get up in the morning and enjoy what I do,” Tegmeyer said.

Botox-like drug without the needle is worth $20 million to Medicis

Botox / Scottsdale AZ Medical Spas

This article is brought to you by Spavelous.com.

The allure of a potential Botox rival that goes on the skin without needing to be injected persuaded Medicis Pharmaceuticals to pay $20 million for about 10 percent of Revance Therapeutics.

The deal, announced Dec. 11, also gives Medicis of Scottsdale, Ariz., an option to buy the Mountain View-based company or to acquire an exclusive license for Revance’s experimental botulinum-toxin wrinkle-fighter in North America when the drug completes Phase 2 clinical trials.

Botox, made by Allergan of Irvine, is the No. 1 cosmetic medical treatment in the country, at about 4 million injection treatments last year for people seeking to smooth the lines in their faces.

“The early stage technology of Revance’s novel delivery of botulinum toxin type A topically for aesthetic purposes is of particular interest to us for our aesthetic product pipeline,” said Jonah Shacknai, chief executive of Medicis. We believe the application of botulinum toxin type A without an injection could dramatically expand the usage of the treatment, and expand the market even more rapidly than it is growing today.”

Medicis makes the No. 1 dermal filler, Restylane, and is seeking U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for its own injectable version of the botulinum toxin.

Revance says its technology lets large drug molecules penetrate the skin. The company has exclusive worldwide rights to a highly purified version of botulinum toxin type A with a low molecular weight, Revance says.

Carmi native expands Marion IL hair salon into spa

Marion IL Day Spa / HQ & Company Hair Salon/ Spas in Illinois

This article is brought to you by Spavelous.com.

Fred James isn’t one to shy away from a business opportunity. Although many men his age - 65 - would be satisfied with the work they had accomplished in their lifetime and head for the local golf course or fishing hole, James is stepping up his game.

Last month, he expanded the HQ & Company Hair Salon at 107 S. Russell St. in Marion into a spa. In addition to cutting hair, James’s staff also performs massage therapy, manicures, pedicures, facials, skin care and waxing.

“For 30 years, I worked mainly out of my home and in small salons cutting hair,” said James, a native of Carmi. “And then in 1995, I decided to go to New York to pursue my dream of being an opera singer.”

James graduated from SIUC in 1974 with a degree in the performing arts with opera singing his specialty, so his dream wasn’t that far-fetched.

“I wanted to give it one final try before I got too old,” he said. “But to be successful in New York, it takes a lot of talent and drive, which is something I guess I didn’t have enough of. Still, it was a wonderful experience, and I’m glad I did it.”

Returning to Marion in 1999, James resumed his hair-styling career. By 2003, he was ready to build his own salon.

“I just wanted to see how far I could take this, and so far, it’s worked out pretty well,” James said. “The salon’s been a great success and I’ve been able to add staff along the way.”

What started out as just a one-man operation has developed into a full-fledged business. James now employs 10 hairdressers, three massage therapists and two additional staffers.

Rita Williams serves as office manager. She said the business is open from 8 to 8 Tuesday and Thursday; from 8 to 6 on Wednesday and Friday; and from 8 to 4 on Saturday. The shop is closed Sunday and Monday.

“Fred had a dream, a vision if you will, and he has followed it,” Williams said. “Most people his age are looking to retire, but not Fred. He enjoys doing what he’s doing.”

Williams said that as the word has spread about the day spa, more potential clients have been calling to inquire about services.

“We’ve been pretty busy,” she said. “And I think we’re going to be even more busy soon. A lot of folks have been coming in and buying gift certificates for Christmas.”

New owners for Paradise Day Spa

Pueblo Colorado Day Spa/ Paradise Day Spa & Wellness Center

The Paradise Day Spa & Wellness Center has new owners and a slightly new location.

The spa, owned and operated the past several years by Christina Helton, was purchased earlier this month by Lynne Spradley, Jami Baker and Lori Cortese.

Spradley previously had owned the spa with another partner before selling to Helton.

Baker said Helton approached Spradley about reselling the business to her and Spradley turned to her friends, Baker and Cortese, as partners this time.

The spa has a number of hair, nail, skin and weight services.

Baker said it is a full-service hair salon, has professionals who do pedicures, manicures and acrylic nails, offers massage in hot-rock, Swedish and deep-tissue styles and now has weight-loss and weight-management services.

The business also offers spray tanning, facials and eyelash extensions.

The spa’s location has moved slightly. It is located in the same suite, 204, at 24 Club Manor Drive, where it was located in when Spradley first owned it. Helton had moved it to another suite several months ago.

Baker said some customers thought the spa was closed.

The spa will honor unexpired gift certificates issued by the prior owner, Baker said, and hopes to attract all the customers and employees it had under Spradley’s ownership.

Baker said the spa will have a staff of 12-15 service providers, all of whom are contract employees. Several positions still must be filled.

To reopen the spa, the partners had the suite remodeled and repainted. Baker said the spa also has changed some of its product lines.

“It has been a big transition,” she said.

Baker said the partners hope to make Paradise Day Spa a thriving business.

“We had a good reputation before,” she said. “A lot of people are happy to hear it is under new ownership and management. We’re pumped to give people the service a full day spa should provide.”

The business is open Tuesday through Saturday and Mondays by appointment.

Queen Creek AZ comes into its own with opening of first botox med-spa

Aspire Med-Spa / Queen Creek AZ Med Spa / Arizona Med Spa

Queen Creek got its first traffic light about a year ago, and now the growing town has something often reserved for bigger city lights — botox.

Opening the middle of next week is Queen Creek’s first med-spa offering a variety of facial and skin-care treatments, including injectable cosmetic solutions, laser treatments, hair removal and microdermabrasion.

“Queen Creek is an up-and-coming city, and for that reason we’d like to provide for the growing needs in skin care,” said Dr. Nathan Brooks, the same doctor who brought San Tan Urgent Care to Queen Creek’s town center.

San Tan Urgent Care and Aspire Med-Spa share a front door in the center at Ocotillo and Rittenhouse roads.

“This is not just an in-and-out spa,” Brooks said. “All treatments are supervised by a board-certified medical physician and performed by a licensed aesthetician.”

The med-spa will also offer skin-care items for sale by Dermologica and Physicians Choice of Arizona.

“This is a new idea for the area,” said Michelle Enman, Aspire’s aesthetician, trained at the Kar-ché Professional Career Center in Mesa.

Enman will provide free consultations for new patients, and set up treatment plans and perform many of the procedures.

The med-spa also offers spider and varicose vein removal, acne care and photo facial rejuvenation.

“We want to promote health care and skin care,” Brooks said. “Skin is the largest organ we have, and it’s a huge issue out here in Arizona. This is complete care — from acne to age renewal.”
