Not everyone knows the term “metrosexual,” but they do know when a guy looks good, and often that starts with some manscaping.

At Face Facts Day Spa in Virginia Beach, Tonnica Armstrong has a lot of male clients.

“Most of the time, a wife or girlfriend is encouraging them to get, like, their back waxes or eyebrows done,” she said.

First timer Dimitri stepped into the spa for an eyebrow wax. Though there was a little pain, Dimitri said it’s “no pain, no gain.”

“A lot of them are really surprised that it wasn’t as painful as they though, and it’s a lot more relaxing than they thought,” said Armstrong.

Most men come to wax something other than their chest, contrary to the movie “40 Year Old Virgin.” In fact, the most popular treatments for men are brows, ears, nose and back.

Being “metro” doesn’t stop with waxing, though. John Brewington’s been getting pedicures for the past year, and said he’s hooked.  “I’m 73, and I got beautiful feet,” he said.

Brewington’s wife encouraged him to come, and while he said he could not repeat what she said to get him there, he is happy she did.

However, Brewington does not consider himself to be a metrosexual.  “I’m sort of ten percent there,” he said. “Ninety percent macho.”

Dmitri, on the other hand, said he does consider himself a metrosexal to some extent, and he’s not the only one.

“It’s becoming quite popular,” said Armstrong. “I’m seeing more and more male clients come in, getting services done. They’re not as intimidated anymore.”

For guys thinking about some of these services and procedures, you have nothing to be ashamed of. It’s pretty mainstream these days.

Destination spas are popular vacation getaways but if you live in Southeast Florida, getting away is closer to home than you think.

In Broward County, the newly renovated Hyatt Regency Bonaventure offers luxurious rooms adjacent to the world famous Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa.

The signature entry welcomes visitors through a lush, tropical Zen garden to a spa equipped with all the luxuries.

Packages include a two-night stay, with food and beverage credits and seven different spa services for under $700 per person. “We call that the girlfriends weekend,” said Fronstin. “It’s just a great way to unwind.”

At the Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami-Dade, clients can stay in one of the 48 private spa suites while they take advantage of the 53,000-square foot facility.

“So many people don’t realize we’re here, but once they do, they’re amazed,” said executive spa director Donna Christoffersson.

The Doral Golf Resort and Spa has a designated fitness center with two consultants on site, classes in nutrition and wellness, and a Spa restaurant offering special low-calorie and low-fat menu items.

“People don’t come here to necessarily lose weight but if they want to, we make it easy,” said Christoffersson.

Weekend getaway packages start at $139 per person, per night, during the off season.

For those looking for more than a weekend getaway, the Hippocrates Institute in West Palm Beach is the place to go.

“We are the original med-spa,” said Director Brian Clemens. “This is about changing your way of life, getting healthy and feeling better.”

That means staying at Hippocrates a minimum of one week at a cost of around $2,500.

That price includes all your meals, which are completely vegan and the drink of choice is wheatgrass, grown on the premises.

“We are focused on detoxifying the body and renewing the spirit,” said Clemens.

The 37-acre compound boasts a heated salt therapy tub, a cold plunge pool, health food store, gym and spa. There are no televisions in the rooms and cell phone use is frowned upon.

“Coming here is about truly getting away,” said Clemens.

Mellow Me Out / Sacramento Day Spa / California Spas

Mellow Me Out, a day spa located in the University Union at Sacramento State, has started offering free five-minute chair massages every second-to-the-last week of the spring and fall semesters in an attempt to reduce the amount stress students have.

According to the National Health Interview Survey, 75 percent of the general population experiences some level of stress every two weeks.

Steve Hodge, a certified massage therapist and employee of Mellow Me out, said a massage can help relieve stress.

“I think the stress that students have is high…both mental and physical,” Hodge said.

Between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., the spa has a massage chair set up directly across from the information desk underneath the stairs, a high traffic area for students.

“We’re so booked up at our location that we offer this station out here,” Hodge said.

Aysha Qari, freshman nursing major, took advantage of the free service.

“I got it just to relieve stress; I’m stressing about finals,” Qari said. “It helped relieve the pain in my back.”

Sophia Navarro, a student at Western Career College, came to Sac State to give students massages. She is working toward become a certified massage therapist.

“A lot of people walk by and I tell them to try it out,” Navarro said.

Many students walked by the sign that advertises the massage services and continued walking.

Many students feel awkward about getting a massage for the first time, but once they get over their initial fear, they tend to come back more frequently, Hodge said.

Made possible by the Student Health Center, Sac State students are allowed three free 15-minute chair massages per semester.

Spa Shiki at the Lodge of Four Seasons / Lake Ozark Day Spa / Missouri Spas

Spa Shiki at the Lodge of Four Seasons will host a turkey drive throughout the month of December to provide Christmas dinners for local families in need. All funds raised will go to the Hope House’s local food pantry. A $12 donation covers the cost of one turkey, and the spa has set a goal of raising enough money for 200 turkeys, making a difference for 200 families this holiday season. Spa Shiki asks for the community’s support through the $12 financial donations or the donation of canned goods.

Food banks nationwide have reported shortages this holiday season. Located in Lake Ozark, the Hope House helps approximately 150 needing families every month with food, clothing and emergency aid. Fifty-one percent of these families are helped only one time. Operating expenses are furnished primarily by supporting churches, but the Hope House needs additional support to meet the needs of the community.

Back in the day, banks were built with a grandeur and strength in both material and design.

These magnificent shrines to commerce were built with tall granite columns, marble counters and brass cashier cages. The structures spoke of trust, reliability and permanence.

Fast-forward to the next century, and enter the world of credit cards, ATM machines and online banking.

The permanence of those banks as imposing buildings remains, but many have been renovated into new establishments, such as clubs, coffeehouses, condos, restaurants — and even a spa.

The Sewickley Spa, Ligonier

Money-related puns abound with satisfied patrons at The Sewickley Spa, who often tell the owner that they got a wealth of a wonderful treatment with rich pleasures. Given that their pampering took place in a former bank vault, there’s no better way to describe it, says Dorothy Andreas Tuel, owner of the Ligonier spa that is housed in a former Mellon Bank building.

“People really get a kick out of it,” she says. “It’s a conversation piece as well as a relaxing treatment.”

Andreas Tuel — who also owns The Sewickley Spa at Sewickley, and The Sewickley Spa at Wisp Resort in Maryland — opened the Ligonier location in 2001. She says she was thrilled to discover that the Mellon Bank building was available, after looking around Ligonier for a new spot.

With plenty of open spaces, the bank building was easy to convert into a spa, she says. The building, with its granite columns, still retains some of its turn-of-the-century bank look, and some banking remnants — like a $20 bill from the 1940s — were found during the renovation. Inside the spa, visitors can get pampered with more than three dozen treatments, mostly skin and body therapy.
