Want A Reason To Love Your Lower Belly Fat? It’s Rich In Stem Cells

Fat removed from the lower abdomen and inner thigh through liposuction was found to be an excellent source of stem cells, with higher stem cell concentrations than other areas of the body, reports a Brazilian-based study in August’s Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery(R), the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). This is the first study of its kind to examine whether fat tissues from different areas of the body vary in stem cell concentration.

“Adult stem cells, derived from our own tissues, hold strong promise for improved clinical therapies,” said J. Peter Rubin, MD, a member of the ASPS Fat Grafting Task Force who is involved in pre-clinical trial work on stem cells taken from fat. “The potential for healing and repairing injury or disease through stem cells, including conditions like breast cancer and reconstruction, heart failure, spinal injuries, diabetes and Parkinson’s disease is incredible. We may be able to more permanently and naturally get rid of pesky wrinkles or augment breasts with stem cell enriched fat in the future as well. Knowing more about the biology of stem cells will be of great value when we are ready for clinical trials in this country.”

In the study, 23 female patients having liposuction in at least four different body areas agreed to have their fat isolated for adult stem cells and analyzed to determine stem cell concentrations. The body areas that were liposuctioned were: lower abdomen, upper abdomen, inner knee, inner thigh, flank and hips.

The study results found a significant difference in stem cell concentrations in different areas of the body. A major finding was that the concentration of stem cells was greatest in the lower abdomen and inner thighs. Interestingly, stem cell concentration in the lower abdomen was five times greater than in the upper abdomen.

“The value of stem cells harvested through fat is the ready and ample supply available,” said ASPS President Richard D’Amico, MD. “Using stem cells will some day have very practical applications to the specialty of plastic surgery. That we may be able to generate new tissue or bone that can be used in many of the reconstructive and cosmetic procedures we do every day is tremendous.”

Stem cells are unspecialized cells that have not yet developed a specific function. Not only are they capable of self renewal, stem calls can divide and produce others that become specialized cells. Scientists and doctors theorize that stem cells will be able to repair or replace damaged or diseased cells. Clinical trials researching the potential of stem cells from fat are ongoing in Europe and Asia. In the U.S., there are many investigators doing pre-clinical trial work to meet the stringent safety guidelines the FDA sets for clinical trials.

According to ASPS statistics, more than 301,000 liposuction procedures were performed in 2007.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is the largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons in the world. Representing more than 6,700 physician members, the Society is recognized as a leading authority and information source on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. ASPS comprises more than 90 percent of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States. Founded in 1931, the Society represents physicians certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

160 Regis Salons - Master Cuts - Cost Cutters - Super Cuts to Close

Hair no more….

Regis to close 160 salons in effort to shave operating costs

Edina MN-based Regis Corp. said Wednesday it will close about 160 underperforming salons in the United States, Canada and United Kingdom in the next six months as it tries to cut costs. Four of the stores will be in Minnesota, though a company official declined to offer specific locations.

The stores make up less than 2 percent of the chain’s 8,500 company-owned salons, which operate under the names Regis Salons, MasterCuts, Cost Cutters, Supercuts and Trade Secret, among others.
The closings come in addition to the 200 or so low-performers that Regis typically shuts down each year when leases run out, Regis CEO Paul Finkelstein said. The company said it would offer employees jobs in nearby salons.

“Every store that opens isn’t a home run,” said Stan Pohmer, a Twin Cities retail consultant. “At some point you have to identify your chances of turning them around. … It’s just good business management to go in and cut out the low-hanging fruit that’s sucking all your resources out. It’s not something that hints at problems endemic with the company.”

Regis expects to shutter 100 stores at regional malls, 40 at strip malls and 20 in the United Kingdom. About a third of the closings will come from the struggling Trade Secret stores, the rest from a “myriad of brands,” Finkelstein said. Many of the stores were located in malls that were struggling or in strip centers that had lost major tenants.

None of the 2,178 SmartStyle salons that operate in Wal-Mart SuperCenters will be closed, Finkelstein said.
Regis expects to record a pretax charge of $20 million to $25 million to close the stores before the end of their lease terms, a cost Finkelstein said will ultimately boost profits by reducing the drain on time and resources.

Regis said it will write down $4.5 million, or 6 to 7 cents a share, in the fourth quarter, which ended June 30. The remainder of the charges will be recorded in the first half of the fiscal year.
Shares on Wednesday closed at $26.81, down almost 2 percent, in a day most of the market’s major indexes closed down by a similar amount.

Regis has spent the past 18 months focusing on internal efforts to reduce costs, including consolidating contracts for janitorial services and office supply vendors and reducing the number of small parcel posts.
Combined with price increases across nearly 6,000 locations, Finkelstein said, the measures helped boost third-quarter net income.

Meanwhile, Regis is pushing forward with new concepts despite cutting its new-store construction in half as consumers make fewer visits to the salon for haircuts, products and other services.
On Aug. 8, Regis plans to open what Finkelstein describes as a “quality, high-end barbershop” called Raze, located off of Hwy. 62 and Shady Oak Road in Minnetonka. Haircuts will run $25 to $30, and come complete with hot towels, Internet access, bottled water and other amenities.

Stressed Out - Massage Therapy Helps New Naperville IL Spa Franchise

Stressful times call for massage therapy
‘Wellness’ top priority for spa franchise new to Naperville

MarketResearch which claims to be the “world’s largest and continuously updated collection of market research,” says that stress represents one of the leading health concerns among Americans today - especially women. So it’s not surprising that massage therapy has become one of the fastest-growing industries around.

According to the American Massage Therapy Association, from 2006-2007 the number of certified massage therapists grew from 250,000 to 300,000. Last year, Money Magazine and Salary rated the profession of massage therapy in their top 12 list of jobs designed “for young professionals ready for a new challenge based on opportunities, salary and personal fulfillment,” and their research predicted a 24 percent increase in job growth.

Little wonder that Elements Therapeutic Massage, a quickly developing franchise, settled a spa in Naperville IL about two months ago. Franchise owner Nathan Toensing said the massage business is a natural extension of other business interests of his, including personal training and chiropractic services.

AT A GLANCE
Elements Therapeutic Massage
Where: 3075 Book Road, Naperville
Hours: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday to Sunday
Call: 630-922-9595

“We live in stressful times, and there are people who say they are tired of treating themselves with pills and tablets and want something different,” Toensing said. “There’s too much of the ‘drive-through’ pharmacy thing. Our approach here is different. We want to treat the whole person.”

Toensing says too many other massage therapists “rub ‘em and leave ‘em,” but Elements Therapeutic Massage looks to extend benefits beyond a 55-minute session. Manager Ken Herold, who has overseen the massage center during its first two months of business, said the focus is on the “wellness” component for clients.

“We try to give people techniques and tips about how to manage their stress level and increase their health and wellness between visits,” Herold said. “Ours is a proactive approach. We try to incorporate wellness and fitness together.”

Elements Therapeutic Massage employs five therapists who have each completed more than 500 hours of training. The company itself was launched about eight years ago in Colorado, and the first franchise store opened in Massachusetts 13 months ago. Since then, 100 franchise stores have come on board. The Naperville store will soon be joined by another location planned for Bloomingdale.

So far, clients in Naperville have ranged from folks in their early 20s through seniors in their 70s. Herold said that “a lot of high school kids came in near the end of May before taking their finals.” The gender ratio favors women about 60 percent, but Herold said men are coming in at a much higher percentage than they do nationally.

“Our numbers of men to women are sort of atypical,” he said. “I think people find our facility a lot more ‘gender’ friendly.”

Clients receive either a 55- or 80-minute massage. Herold explained that the therapist isn’t prodding and pushing on patients the entire time, but works with each person to find his or her comfort level between deep massage and rest.

“It’s all about the comfort of the individual and establishing what approach you plan to use on the first day,” he said.

Tattoos Taboos - Med Spa Tattoo Removal

Women More Likely to Have Second Thoughts on Tattoos

While most Americans who get tattoos are happy with their decision, women are much more likely than men to decide to get their markings removed, new research reveals.

The study authors noted that the gender difference might be attributable to the fact that women appear to face more social stigma and negative comments as a result of having a tattoo.
“We saw that for women there is still some negative societal fallout to having tattoos”, said study author Myrna L. Armstrong, a professor in the school of nursing at Texas Tech University’s Health Sciences Center, in Lubbock, Texas. “This isn’t a problem for men. Society supports men, because tattoos are related to a macho image, so we don’t question it. But for women, having a tattoo seems to be a transgression of gender boundaries.”

Armstrong and her colleagues outlined their observations in the July issue of the Archives of Dermatology.

Tattoo_Woman.png

The authors pointed out that about one-quarter of Americans between the ages of 18 and 30 have a tattoo, and women constitute between 45 percent and 65 percent of the tattoo market.
Prior studies show that more than 80 percent of the inked crowd are pleased with their decision to get a tattoo. Among the fifth that are not, about 6 percent ultimately remove their marking.

To assess who is seeking removal and why, Armstrong and her team surveyed 196 patients — with an average age of 30 — who visited four dermatology clinics for tattoo removal in 2006.
More than half said they had gotten their tattoos between the ages of 16 and 23. Asked about their initial impulse to do so, 44 percent said it was to feel unique, while 33 percent said it made them feel independent, and 28 percent said it made their life experiences stand out.

When asked why they finally chose to remove their tattoo, 57 percent said it had caused them embarrassment; 38 percent said it lowered their body image; 37 percent said it caused problems with clothes; 25 percent said it brought about stigma; and 21 percent said they did so in honor of a particular occasion — such as a birthday or marriage.

But regardless of motivation, perhaps the most striking statistic was the gender ratio of the patients seeking tattoo removal: 69 percent women versus 31 percent men. The observed gap was a big shift from the breakdown of an earlier study the research team had conducted in 1996, in which more men then women had been seeking tattoo removal.

In the current study, women were also found to be experiencing more negative reactions to their tattoo than men, whether in a public, workplace or school setting — often forcing them to cover up their tattoo with make-up and bandages.

Armstrong and her team offered women a practical tactic for coping with such stigma.
“I want to stress that we are not being judgmental at all,” she noted. “But we recommend that women might think about controlling where the body placement of their tattoo is, so they have control over how it’s exposed, and don’t have to show it if they don’t want to.”

Dr. Jeffrey S. Orringer, an associate professor in the department of dermatology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and director of the university’s Cosmetic Dermatology & Laser Center, said the findings make “nice sense” and dovetail with his own patient experience.

“And there are a lot of reasons we can speculate as to why,” added Orringer. “Women’s clothing certainly tends to reveal more of the chest or lower leg area, whereas for men in a business setting, a shirt and tie is covering these areas. And women tend to go through transitions — both professional and social — in their 20s, where they might come to feel that what plays on the college campus may not be appropriate in the board room or other settings. So, getting their tattoo removed is a way to move forward into the next phase of their lives.”
