Want A Reason To Love Your Lower Belly Fat? It’s Rich In Stem Cells

Fat removed from the lower abdomen and inner thigh through liposuction was found to be an excellent source of stem cells, with higher stem cell concentrations than other areas of the body, reports a Brazilian-based study in August’s Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery(R), the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). This is the first study of its kind to examine whether fat tissues from different areas of the body vary in stem cell concentration.

“Adult stem cells, derived from our own tissues, hold strong promise for improved clinical therapies,” said J. Peter Rubin, MD, a member of the ASPS Fat Grafting Task Force who is involved in pre-clinical trial work on stem cells taken from fat. “The potential for healing and repairing injury or disease through stem cells, including conditions like breast cancer and reconstruction, heart failure, spinal injuries, diabetes and Parkinson’s disease is incredible. We may be able to more permanently and naturally get rid of pesky wrinkles or augment breasts with stem cell enriched fat in the future as well. Knowing more about the biology of stem cells will be of great value when we are ready for clinical trials in this country.”

In the study, 23 female patients having liposuction in at least four different body areas agreed to have their fat isolated for adult stem cells and analyzed to determine stem cell concentrations. The body areas that were liposuctioned were: lower abdomen, upper abdomen, inner knee, inner thigh, flank and hips.

The study results found a significant difference in stem cell concentrations in different areas of the body. A major finding was that the concentration of stem cells was greatest in the lower abdomen and inner thighs. Interestingly, stem cell concentration in the lower abdomen was five times greater than in the upper abdomen.

“The value of stem cells harvested through fat is the ready and ample supply available,” said ASPS President Richard D’Amico, MD. “Using stem cells will some day have very practical applications to the specialty of plastic surgery. That we may be able to generate new tissue or bone that can be used in many of the reconstructive and cosmetic procedures we do every day is tremendous.”

Stem cells are unspecialized cells that have not yet developed a specific function. Not only are they capable of self renewal, stem calls can divide and produce others that become specialized cells. Scientists and doctors theorize that stem cells will be able to repair or replace damaged or diseased cells. Clinical trials researching the potential of stem cells from fat are ongoing in Europe and Asia. In the U.S., there are many investigators doing pre-clinical trial work to meet the stringent safety guidelines the FDA sets for clinical trials.

According to ASPS statistics, more than 301,000 liposuction procedures were performed in 2007.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is the largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons in the world. Representing more than 6,700 physician members, the Society is recognized as a leading authority and information source on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. ASPS comprises more than 90 percent of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States. Founded in 1931, the Society represents physicians certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Starved for Sleep? Watch Your Waistline

Could the key to weight loss for some people be as simple as getting some extra shuteye?

Possibly. New research suggests that people who don’t get enough sleep tend to weigh more — and that sleep can affect levels of the appetite-regulating hormones leptin and ghrelin.

“There is a dynamic balance between proper sleep and proper health. Sleep deprivation affects weight and a lot of other things. If you cheat sleep, there are a number of consequences, including affecting your hormones, appetite and mood,” said Dr. Patrick Strollo, medical director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Sleep Medicine Center.

Sleepless in the USA

Two out of three Americans are overweight, and almost one in five are obese, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And, while most people are aware of the relationship of diet and exercise to excess weight, few realize that the amount of sleep they get each night can also affect their weight.

Researchers at the Sleep Disorders Center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Virginia conducted two studies, each included 1,000 men and women, and they found that those who reported sleeping less tended to weigh more.

Of course, it could be that being overweight might make it harder to get a restful night sleep.

“People who are overweight may have less restful sleep due to heartburn, snoring or more serious sleep disorders like sleep apnea or night eating syndrome,” said Dr. Michelle May, author of “Am I Hungry? What To Do When Diets Don’t Work.”

But, she said, “It works both ways,” and that a lack of sleep can affect your weight. Sleep deprivation affects your body chemistry, appetite and the choices that you make throughout the day, May said.

Another recent study included 12 healthy men in their 20s. Each of the men slept only four hours for two nights. The study found that levels of leptin, a hormone that tells the brain it’s time to stop eating because the stomach is full, decreased by 18 percent during the two-day study period. Levels of another hormone, ghrelin, which turns the hunger mechanism on, increased by 28 percent.

On average, the men reported that their hunger pangs increased by 24 percent.

“Hormones change with sleep loss and deprivation,” said Strollo. “Sleep deprivation can affect appetite and also the type of food that one desires. When you’re sleep-deprived, you generally don’t crave carrot sticks.”

May agreed, adding, “When you’re tired, you’re less resilient to stress and other common emotional triggers for eating. When you eat to help you cope with emotions, you’re more likely to choose comfort foods like chocolate, ice cream or chips. And, since eating only helps temporarily, you may find yourself reaching for food again and again to try to make yourself feel better.

“Getting enough sleep is the best way to prevent sleep deprivation from contributing to weight gain,” May advised. “When you aren’t able to get your Zzzs, pay more attention to how much you eat and how you handle fatigue and stress. A short walk will be a better energy boost than a trip to the candy machine.”

Strollo said that while most people need between seven and eight hours of sleep a night, there are some people who need as many as 10 and others who may do well on just five hours.

The best way to figure out how much sleep you need, he said, is to take a long vacation and after a couple of days of catching up on your sleep debt, see how many hours of sleep you need to wake without an alarm clock. Since many Americans don’t take long vacations, if you feel that you’re not fully functional all day, or that you’re doing things to stay awake, like a double-espresso shot, you’re probably not getting enough sleep, he said.

May added that it’s important to remember that “healthy eating, physical activity and sleep are not luxuries, they are necessities.”

Do new spa wraps really help women drop pounds and inches?

Drop Inches Off Your Waist In One Hour

This article is brought to you by Spavelous.com.

Have you tried all kinds of weight lose spa programs, dieted, exercised and nothing seems to work? How would you like to slim down for a big date this weekend?

NBC 10’s Dawn Timmeney said it can be done. It’s called the Suddenly Slender Body Wrap.

It seems almost too good to be true — lose up to 20 inches in an hour. But the women who have done it swear by it.

“Summertime is coming, and we want to make sure everything is lifted,” said Dionne Thompson, the Celebrity Body Wrap owner.

There’s no cutting, no exhausting workout, no sucking out the fat — just wrapping.

Julie Burke was wrapped up like a mummy at Celebrity Body Wraps in Media to lose those unwanted inches.

“I saw the advertisement for losing so many inches, and I thought, ‘Well, I’ll try it,’” Burke said.

First, Burke was measured in 18 different places. Then, she was wrapped with Ace bandages soaked in warm mineral solution, and they are left on for one hour.

“We wrap them from the feet all the way up, really focusing the tension and the compression of the bandages on areas that they want to lose inches in the most,” Thompson said.

“Your skin that’s here that’s loose here, we’re going to tighten and tone it so that what you’re seeing down here is what you see all over,” Thompson told Burke.

Once Burke was wrapped up tight, she was basted every 20 minutes with the solution that we’re told is a combination of top-secret minerals.

The 60 minutes passes quickly because clients are encouraged to do light exercise, which helps release toxins and keeps the lymphatic system draining.

Then, the bandages are removed and Burke was re-measured.

Burke had taken off 19 inches and said she felt the difference right away.

“I had my belt on the very last hole. Now, it’s on the next to the last hole. It works. It works,” Burke said.

And that’s why Burke said she gets a body wrap every couple of months.

“I’ve had numerous wraps — you know, seaweed wraps and wraps where it takes out the water weight — and then, the next morning, you wake up and nothing has changed. But this definitely does make a difference,” Burke said.

A friend told Rose Marino, a psychologist in Media, about the Suddenly Slender Body Wrap, and she admitted she was skeptical.

“I wasn’t really expecting very much. I thought I would just do it for fun. Then, when I saw the results, I was amazed,” Marino said. “I had been trying to diet and lose weight for several months and was rather unsuccessful.”

But the wrap took off the inches and helped motivate Marino to stay on a weight loss program.

“One of the things I did notice was that in areas where the skin seems to be a little more stretched out than I would like it to be it really firms it up,” Marino said.

Clients said the wrap is not dehydrating at all. The water you see in the bags is actually from the basting solution.

So, how does it work?

“Essentially, what the wrap does is help to compact your fat cells, bringing them closer together, therefore giving you a slender appearance,” Thompson said.

“I felt wonderful,” Burke said. “The results were instantaneous, and I maintained those results for weeks.”

The results last for about eight weeks. Many clients do a series of wraps over several months as they try to lose weight and inches.

But if you have a special event and are trying to squeeze into your favorite outfit, this could be just what you need, Timmeney reported.

Celebrity Body Wraps is offering a special deal to NBC 10 viewers. The normal price of $140 will be reduced to $109 if you mention that you saw the report on NBC 10 News.

Nature’s Fat-Burning Breakthrough

Why eating carbs can help you slim down–and how to do it right

Tummy Flattening Gel / Best Weight Loss Spas / Weight Loss Spa Men

Potatoes get a bad rap as little more than a waist-thickening waste of calories. But amazing new research puts spuds squarely at the center of the latest weight loss buzz, along with other unfairly maligned carbs such as corn and rice. The reason: All these foods contain resistant starch, a unique kind of fiber you’ll be hearing a lot more about. In fact, experts agree that it’s one of the most exciting nutrition breakthroughs they’ve seen in years. “Resistant starch has the potential to become the next hot nutrition trend,” says Leslie Bonci, RD, author of the American Dietetic Association’s Guide to Better Digestion. Indeed, more than 160 studies have examined this little known nutrient’s remarkable health and weight loss benefits.

RESISTANT STARCH: THE NEW POWER NUTRIENT

Although this may be the first you’ve heard of resistant starch, it’s likely been a part of your diet most of your life. Resistant starch is a type of dietary fiber naturally found in many carbohydrate-rich foods such as potatoes, grains, and beans, particularly when these foods are cooled. It gets its name because it “resists” digestion in the body, and though this is true of many types of fiber, what makes resistant starch so special is the powerful impact it has on weight loss and overall health. As a dieter’s tool it can’t be beat: Not only does it increase your body’s ability to burn fat, but it also fills you up and reduces overall hunger. Its health benefits are truly impressive as well. Studies show it improves blood sugar control, boosts immunity, and may even reduce your cancer risk.

Resistant starch is bulky, so it takes up space in your digestive system. And because you can’t digest or absorb it, the starch never enters your bloodstream. That means it bypasses the fate of most carbohydrates, which get socked away as body fat when you eat more than you can burn. Here are two more key ways resistant starch can help you drop unwanted pounds:

It ups your calorie burn unlike some types of fiber; resistant starch gets fermented when it reaches the large intestine. This process creates beneficial fatty acids, including one called butyrate, which may block the body’s ability to burn carbohydrates. “This can prevent the liver from using carbs as fuel and, instead, stored body fat and recently consumed fat are burned,” explains Janine Higgins, PhD, nutrition research director for the University of Colorado’s Adult and Pediatric General Clinical Research Center. In your body, carbohydrates are the preferred source of fuel, like gasoline that powers your car’s engine. Butyrate essentially prevents some of the gas from getting into the tank, and your cells turn to fat as an alternative. One study found that replacing just 5.4% of total carbohydrate intake with resistant starch created a 20 to 30% increase in fat burning after a meal.

It shuts down hunger hormones Animal studies have found that resistant starch prompts the body to pump out more satiety-inducing hormones. A meal with resistant starch triggers a hormonal response to shut off hunger, so you eat less. Research shows that you don’t reap this benefit from other sources of fiber.

FIGHTING DISEASE, ONE POTATO AT A TIME

The research on resistant starch doesn’t stop at weight loss. This powerful nutrient is also earning accolades as a major disease fighter from standard bearers such as the World Health Organization. Here’s why scientists around the globe are so excited about its health benefits:

It can prevent cancer Research shows that the butyrate created by resistant starch may protect the lining of the colon, making it less vulnerable to the DNA damage that triggers diseases, such as colon cancer. It can also create a pH drop inside the colon, which boosts the absorption of calcium and blocks the absorption of cancer-causing substances.

It may fight diabetes and heart disease Like other fibers, resistant starch helps control blood sugar levels. “Because it skips routine digestion, we see lower blood sugar and insulin levels following a resistant starch-rich meal,” says Christine Gerbstadt, MD, RD, CDE, spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. Blood sugar control translates into more energy and sustained energy. It also means long-term heart protection, because chronic high levels of blood sugar and insulin cause delicate arteries to become clogged and harden.

It boosts your immune system “When you have low levels of good-for-you bacteria in your digestive system, it’s very difficult to fight off disease,” says Joanne Slavin, PhD, RD, a nutrition professor at the University of Minnesota. Resistant starch may boost the growth of probiotics, the same kind of healthy bacteria found in yogurt that keeps bad bacteria in check.

HOW TO EAT ENOUGH

Right now, there is no specific target for resistant starch intake. But preliminary data shows that the average American woman consumes about 4 g of resistant starch each day. Experts such as Gerbstadt believe the research is strong enough to advocate doubling that.

Adding just 1/2 to 1 cup of cooled resistant starch-rich food per day can do the trick. See “6 Best Fat-Burning Foods” for ideas, and follow this advice to maximize your intake.

Keep it cool in cooked starchy foods, resistant starch is created during cooling. Cooking triggers starch to absorb water and swell, and as it slowly cools, portions of the starch become crystallized into the form that resists digestion. Cooling either at room temperature or in the refrigerator will raise resistant starch levels. Just don’t reheat. That breaks up the crystals, causing resistant starch levels to plummet.

Look for fortified foods a growing number of commercial foods have been bolstered with Hi-maize, the brand name of a resistant starch powder made from corn. You can use it in baking (and lower calories) by replacing up to one-quarter of traditional flour in any recipe without affecting taste or texture (King Arthur Hi-maize Natural Fiber, $5.95 per 12-ounce bag; kingarthurflour.com). Or, look for packaged products that include Hi-maize, as another easy way to boost your intake.
