Spas offer spa deals, discounts to lure customers in slumping economy

With the economy slumping and fuel prices soaring, facials and massages may not be a top priority for consumers on a budget.

But America’s top spas, gathered in New York for the annual meeting of the International Spa Association, are trying to make it as easy as possible for visitors to indulge without using up their gas money or breaking into the piggy bank.

“You can still go and have a spa experience without spending a ton of money,” says Veronica Cole of the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa in Ojai, Calif. “Many spas, like ours, offer use of our facilities with one treatment, so you can come spend hours relaxing.”

In other words, if you can’t afford a weekend or overnight stay, consider booking one massage or scrub at a destination spa, which usually entitles you to use the pool, steam room and other facilities for the day.

The Ojai Valley Inn, located not far from Los Angeles, is a destination spa known for its blooming lavender gardens and an approach that draws on Native American traditions. Cole said carving out an hour or two and hanging out at the spa can be relaxing enough to make you feel like you’re on a mini-vacation.

Jaime Huffman of the Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa in Asheville, N.C., said more 50-minute massages have been made available recently instead of more expensive 80-minute massages. The Cliff House Resort & Spa in Ogunquit, Maine, offers a US$99 spa sampler on Sundays.

Booking midweek is usually cheaper than weekend trips and spa owners suggest asking about specials like a mother-daughter discount or a family discount. Most spas have them but don’t necessarily talk them up.

Cole also suggested asking the therapist or esthetician for tips on how to continue the regimen at home.

“It’s not that we don’t want you to come and stay with us for days - we do,” she said. “But if it’s a choice between thinking it’s too expensive and skipping it altogether, we’d rather you just come for something small.”

Spas are still growing despite the economy: 138 million people visited spas around the country in 2007, according to the most recent industry figures from the International Spa Association. And spa revenue in 2007 was $10 billion, the organization said, up from just over $9 billion the year before. Data for 2008 shows that spas continue to grow, the association said.

Spa operators also suggest considering a spa vacation as an alternative to going to Europe or taking some other big trip. There’s rarely a need to drive once you’re at a destination spa, so you won’t be spending money on gas. And an all-inclusive booking means that lodging, food, pools, the locker room and other amenities and facilities like hot tubs and steam rooms are included in the cost.

“You can really retreat to a spa, and there are no unaccounted costs because you pay upfront,” said Lola Roeh, general manager of the Osthoff Resort, which is home to the Aspira Spa in Elkhart Lake, Wis. “You can chose to add on costs, like additional treatments, but that’s up to you.”

Destination spas can be pricey - $500 for a weekend or more - but it’s possible to cut other costs if you decide to vacation at one. The Lodge at Woodloch, located about two hours outside of New York in Hawley, Pa., is far enough away from the city that visitors can feel like they’re on a real vacation, but close enough to take a bus or train from Manhattan and save on gas. And you don’t have to stay a week or five days - many spas offer two-night stays that can still be relaxing.

Many other spas are located outside of major metropolitan areas, like Kohler day spa in Burr Ridge, Ill., outside Chicago. The company, known for its faucets, paired a showroom with the spa so clients can sit in whirlpools or fancy tubs and do shopping for remodelling, too.

Along with tips for spa-goers on a budget, other themes emerged at the Aug. 21 spa meeting. Here are five trends shaping today’s spa experience.

-Busy bees: Many spas are catering to the stresses on busy workers. The Spa of Colonial Williamsburg in Williamsburg, Va., is offering a WiFi massage geared toward the muscles you use when you’re at the computer. Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, N.Y. , offers meditation to help calm nerves.

-The first time: Ginn Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Fla., offers a clothed massage - for people who are afraid of going in the buff to a treatment. A survey of spa-goers last year found 70 per cent who hadn’t tried a massage were uncomfortable with being naked or partially naked. This massage eases people into the treatment - and hopefully allows them to feel more comfortable to go full Monty later on.

-Couples too: Ginny Lopis of The Lodge at Woodloch says she’s seeing more and more couples booking spa getaways. At least half the guests these days are male, she says. “It’s really not just for ladies anymore,” she said. “We get husbands and boyfriends here who really enjoy it.” Other spas say they are seeing more couples, also.

-Go Green: Spas are getting greener, from homeopathic treatments at the JW Marriott Spa Collection to an eco-friendly spa at Mohonk Mountain House that uses organic products made from locally grown ingredients. The Kohler spas are big on water conservation, and use eco-friendly shower heads and toilets.

-Distinguish from the masses: With more than 18,000 spas around the country, establishments are distinguishing themselves by offering unique treatments and products. The Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts spas offer a lava shell neck treatment, which uses shells, applied in the same way that heated stones are sometimes used in massage. The Lake Austin Spa Resort located outside Austin, Texas, offers yoga and spa treatments for those with asthma and allergies.

Spas add services for men as male client numbers increase

A man receives a hot stone massage at The Spa at the Hotel Hershey in Derry Township, Dauphin County. In 2003, roughly 3,500 male guests visited the spa. Last year, the spa had about 5,300 male visitors.

The silence inside The Spa at the Hotel Hershey is peaceful and calming. Drafts of air laced with the tranquil scent of soaps and lotions waft through the building, emanating from the bodies of spa visitors.

The guests, draped in yellow robes, lounge in various luxurious environments surrounded by handfuls of Hershey Kisses.

Women of all ages dominate the population, but a couple of men used the spa on a recent afternoon. About 12 percent of the spa’s clientele are men, said Ginger McLean, the spa director.

The facility welcomed 19,000 guests during 2001, its first year in business. Last year, more than 50,000 clients visited.

The male-to-female ratio has remained the same over the years, McLean said. In 2003, roughly 3,500 male guests visited the spa. Last year, it had about 5,300 male visitors.

Top 15 Items a Man Wants From A Spa

“By and large, depending on the region and what’s available, men typically begin their spa experience because a significant female in their life introduced them,” she said. “I want to enhance and grow the things that are already doing well while seeing how we can raise the bar.”

McLean said she hopes the spa’s addition of a men’s shave-and-haircut package will increase the number of male clients. The package includes a scalp, hand and arm massage. Four of the spa’s 87 salon technicians will perform the service.

The package was introduced late last year, when the spa created a new men’s locker room to make room for more lockers for women. The male locker room was upgraded during the expansion and includes a flat-panel television. A barber chair also was added.

McLean took her post in mid-April. Her career includes positions at Marco Ocean Beach Resort & Spa, Fiddlers Creek in Florida and Ojai Valley Inn & Spa in California. Her experience focused on developing new spa programs and services.

McLean hopes the Spa at the Hotel Hershey will cater to men by offering massages that cater to the needs of athletes.

Last year, about 31 percent of U.S. spa-goers were men, according to the Kentucky-based International Spa Association. As a result, demand is up for products and services specifically designed for men.

Over the past 10 years, the number of men who have become spa-goers has increased by about 10 percent nationwide, McLean said. Spas across the country are responding to this trend.

“Across the board, you’re seeing more male-specific services,” McLean said.

The men’s locker room at the Spa at the Hotel Hershey features 14 lockers, a shaving counter and a masculine feel. The spa’s menu includes a guide for treatments recommended for men.

Men & Facials

Within the past few years, the number of men visiting Lancaster spa Visage a Visage has grown from about 5 percent of the spa’s clientele to about 25 percent, said Tina Broderick/Stoltzfus, the spa’s manager.

“It grows every year,” she said. “Every year, we try to add a service to include men. I think a lot of men out there are curious and want to try (it).”

Visage offers packages recommended for men, with treatments including a gentlemen’s manicure, a gentlemen’s haircut and style, a seaweed wrap and a Swedish massage. Lately, more men have come in for pedicures, she said.

The spa promotes packages for couples to introduce men to the services, she said.

“By doing couples packages, it gives them a chance to come in without feeling funny,” she said. “When they come in, they’re a little uneasy until they’re in the room for 15 minutes, and then they’re asleep.”

About The Spa at the Hotel Hershey

The Spa at the Hotel Hershey opened in 2001 and offers signature chocolate treatments and a Cuban-inspired menu. The size of the spa was doubled in 2004 to 30,000 square feet on three floors.

While the spa will not be physically affected by the $35 million expansion project announced for the hotel this year, spa officials do expect more guests as a result. Spa Director Ginger McLean will explore possibilities such as poolside spa treatments (be careful on this one, there is nothing worse than paying for a massage in an area where children are yelling and running wild) to coincide with the outdoor recreational complex, which will include pools and cabanas.

On May 1, the spa launched medically based skin-care therapy services as a result of a partnership with Penn State Hershey Cosmetic Surgery. Guests at the resort can now be chauffeured to the cosmetic suite for treatments such as chemical peels and Botox.

Spas at resorts like the Hotel Hershey usually do not provide medical-based services beyond teeth-whitening and microdermabrasion services, McLean said.

“It’s going to be fun to see how that takes off,” she said. “For resort spas, that’s relatively new.”

Spa Services and Children - Bikini Wax at Eight - Age Appropriate Spa Services

Childhood banished for kids of the rich

‘Children of pampered are being taken for a ride without backward glance’

Plucking stray hairs so the eyebrows are arched just so, bikini wax jobs and even microderm abrasion – all the chores of maintaining the female body in competition to be a supermodel. Except these girls are ages 8 or 9, or maybe 10.

The new trend has been documented anecdotally by Carrie Denny, who wrote about it in the Philadelphia Magazine.

“Over the past few years, we’ve seen a tidal wave of this rising luxury-class culture – you’ve seen it in these pages, manifested in reports of $80,000 ‘push presents,’ lavish condo buildings sprouting up like beanstalks, and weekends spent stockpiling couture with on-call personal shoppers. But just when we thought this consumerist takeover couldn’t get any worse, here comes the trend’s newest tributary: The kids of the pampered are being taken along for the ride, without a backward glance at the childhood left behind,” she wrote.

Denny reports Lauren Albert, Rescue Rittenhouse Spa director, says moms often haul in daughters ages of 10 to 14 for waxes, nail services and facials, and expert advice on makeup.

“It’s not just to get them ready for their big party,” Albert told the magazine. “It’s like, ‘Okay, you’re becoming a woman now, here are the things you’ll need to do as a woman.’”

But Denny pointed out the young girls are not women.

“This new, unstoppable desire of mothers to pluck and paint their daughters has created an unexpected conundrum for spa owners and aestheticians, who can’t afford to lose the moms’ lucrative business – but who also don’t want to be partners in crime,” she wrote.

Owner Joseph Cutrufello of the Pierre & Carlo European Salon & Spa said the moms are advised about the pain, sweating, and skin irritation that can result from some treatments. Denny reported at Bernard’s Salon & Day Spa in Cherry Hill, marketing director Carla Ciocoila-Toppi is more direct.

“We’ve flat-out told mothers that highlighting such a young girl’s hair is a bad idea, and something we’d rather not do. But so many mothers push anyway that now we have them sign a waiver.”

Owner Sarah Keating of the Phoenix Salon & Spa noted she not only requires moms to sign waivers, but requires them to be on hand for procedures such as body waxing, “as any wayward hair that dared to grow on [the daughter's] adolescent skin – from head to toe – was ripped out.”

“It’s like this keeping-up-with-the-Joneses thing has stretched to our kids,” Dasha Klein, who has an 11-year-old daughter. She said she knows 16-year-olds who have had breast implants and a 20-year-old who gets Botox.

“They’re trying to keep up with Hollywood – and Britney Spears and Paris Hilton and Miley Cyrus and whoever else they’re looking at,” she said. The experts say there are some times when professional help is a good idea, such as when a child’s skin breaks out to the point it’s noticed.

Keating told the magazine that nail-painting is as far she she allows her own nine-year-old to go, and her 12-year-old gets an occasional cleansing facial.

“She has her whole life to do what she wants,” she told Denny. “I want her to make those decisions about her body for herself, when she’s an adult.”

“The rich get richer and more abominable. I feel worry for these girls and the emotionally damaged, scarred women they will inevitably become. Shame on you, bad mommies,” wrote “anonymous” on the magazine’s forum.

“Does the mother of the 7-year-old really think her daughter’s hair is not the right shade? My daughter’s hair could never be more beautiful – soft and untouched,” added R. Davies.

Bridgeville PA - Sandstone Resort at Hudson Valley - $100 million indoor water park resort and spa

A 350-room indoor destination resort with a 60,000 square foot water park and family entertainment sphere was announced Monday by Bridgeville USA LLC. The company plans to build the facility, which anticipates employing 250 full- and part-time people, on 18 acres off Rt. 17 exit 107 in Bridgeville, PA.

The project has been dubbed Sandstone Resort at Hudson Valley.

“Indoor water parks are becoming very common in many areas of the country. Their popularity is largely based on the family-friendly getaways that can be had relatively close to home every day of the year in a beautiful 84-degree setting,” Richard Coleman of American Resort Management, the company chosen to operate the facility.

The resort will also include a spa featuring anti-age treatments and advanced DNA testing, a high definition 4-D theater, expanded resort amenities, acidities, shopping and several “interactive dining options.”

The company hopes to break ground this fall and open in the summer of 2009. Coleman said they are about to start seeking the local planning approvals for the project.
