New York Spa Recognized for Best Manicure and Great Employee Environment

The Grand Spa, located in New York City, was recently recognized by the New York Magazine for the Best Cheap Manicure, for providing a relaxing atmosphere for clients and for having a great environment for employees.

REVIEW THIS SPA NOW

The Grand Spa in New York City doesn’t just offer a great manicure, it offers the best. That’s the word from the New York Magazine - a city magazine that covers, analyzes, comments on and defines the news, culture, entertainment, lifestyle, fashion and personalities that drive New York City - which, in its Health & Self section, recently gave the Grand Spa the title of Best Cheap Manicure in the city.

The Grand Spa is run and owned by husband and wife Eitan and Carmela Ben-Yosef, who have imposed a no-acrylic, no-airbrush policy since opening the Spa five years ago to provide an airy and fresh smelling environment that is better for workers, customers and nails. We also provide laser hair removal for our clients at very competitive prices.

But what truly separates the Grand Spa from the rest of the nail salons is the fact that the Ben-Yosefs try to keep their workers happy by sending them out to lunch, hand their tips over directly, and, if business is slow, have them put their feet up and relax, making it easy to pay the 8 dollars for a regular manicure and 19 dollars for a pedicure.

Can overdoing facial treatments damage skin your skin?

Facial_consultation.png

This article is brought to you by Spavelous.com. http://www.spavelous.com

Overdoing facial treatments can damage skin

Aggressive facial treatments such as microdermabrasion and chemical peels are as common as the weekly manicure. Facial treatments, once thought of as severe, are now considered a means to recapturing youth. But is this quest for skin perfection causing more harm than good? “Women are peel crazy. They will go from one office to the next and get peels everywhere . . . and will not let you know they are doing this,” said Jewels Deyo, an aesthetician at Moss Wellness Center in Scottsdale.

Beauty products have kept pace. At-home microdermabrasion kits, peels and masks line drugstore shelves, allowing women to take dermatology into their own hands.

Facial cleansers contain higher levels of benzoyl peroxide than in the past, which can strip the skin if used daily, said Tina Seitz, aesthetician manager at Moss Wellness Center.

“Overprocessed skin is not healthy skin,” said Kathy Krakora, owner of Scosh Makeup & Skincare Studio in Scottsdale. “Pairing chemical peels with microdermabrasion, a mechanical peel, can be a fairly aggressive procedure, as they are both skin resurfacing methods. Used together, they can potentially cause serious damage.”

Side effects can range from pinker to redder skin, more sensitive skin and very dry or oily skin, she says. Problems occur because the skin’s transepidermal barrier, the top layer that holds in moisture and protects skin, is lost.

African-American women, with more sensitive skin, can experience keloid scarring when the area heals and leaves a darker, raised scar, she says.

Microdermabrasion, a treatment that increases cell renewal and stimulates collagen growth, accounts for most of Krakora’s business, and she continues to see an increase in requests. She believes the treatment is extremely effective but cautions clients not to overdo it. Allowing enough time in between treatments and complying with aftercare instructions is crucial, Krakora said.

“Just like exercising your body, if it is overdone and does not have a chance to heal, then it is going to hurt it,” Seitz said. “The same with the peels and microdermabrasion - if you do not have time to heal, then you are actually breaking the collagen down rather than building it up.”

These treatments are fine to get, said Miriam Cummings, a dermatologist specializing in cosmetic care at Southwest Skin Specialists in Scottsdale, but adds that a dermatologist should be involved before trying intense at-home or spa treatments. The way a person’s skin reacts to these types of procedures depends on an individual’s skin type, color and texture.

“You never know what you are dealing with. All these things need to be under the guide of a doctor and a physician-recommended aesthetician,” Cummings said.

Dermatologists attribute the popularity of these treatments to an image-driven society.

“People are more cosmetically aware now. One friend has something done, and they talk, and that is how things spread,” Cummings said.

Medical spas, commonly called medspas, are even in malls these days, and women can pop in during lunch for a quick peel.

“In everything in our society, more is better. They (the women) get good results the first time and want to do more of it,” Seitz said.

Peels and microdermabrasion used to be offered only in clinical settings, but today you can get these services in most day spas and some full-service salons.

“Just like anything else, once something becomes more accessible and affordable, you’ll have more people doing it and more people who overdo it,” she said.

This doesn’t mean women have to ditch spa days and drop their aestheticians. Crystal Olson of Scottsdale achieves compliment-worthy skin by getting just one microdermabrasion treatment a month.

She was reminded of the importance of moderation when she saw a woman who had overdone it.

“She was getting a lot of treatments. The last one she had was a laser/chemical-type thing, and it, to me, looked pretty severe,” Olson said. “I would never do that to my skin.”

Proper Use of Sunscreens - Before and After Spa Services

This article is brought to you by Spavelous.com. http://www.spavelous.com

Exposure to ultraviolet light, UVA or UVB, accounts for 90% of the symptoms of premature skin aging including wrinkles. The most important skin-care product available to prevent wrinkles is sunscreen, but most people do not use sunscreen correctly.

When to use sunscreen

Most sunscreens aren’t effective until about 30 minutes after application.

The key ingredient of many sunscreens is PABA, or para-aminobenzoic acid, which protects the skin by absorbing ultraviolet light. But PABA has to bind to the skin to be fully effective, and that takes about half an hour once the screen has been applied. So apply it every day after you shower and before you go out into the sun.

The International Dermal Institute (IDI) advises us not to only use sunscreen on warm, clear days, but also on sunny winter days, when it’s cloudy and even while driving. “We need to protect our skin any time it’s exposed to daylight, not just when we think our chances of exposure are higher,” says Dr Diana Howard, vice-president of Research and Development for The IDI.

Research shows that daily low-grade exposure to sunlight can be just as damaging as short, intense exposure with sun protection. Howard adds, “The proper application of sunscreen on a daily basis is as mandatory to skin health as proper cleansing.”

Before application, shake the bottle well before use to mix particles that might be clumped up in the container.

Use sun protection on all parts of your skin exposed to the sun, including the ears, back, shoulders and the back of your knees and legs. If blemishes or sensitive skin is an issue, special non-oil-based sunscreens are available for use on your face. Be sure to apply enough; as a rule of thumb, use an ounce, approximately a handful to cover your entire body every couple of hours. Apply it thickly and thoroughly, and get help for hard-to-reach places like your back. Two trouble spots that don’t work so well with suncreen: Your scalp and your eyelids. So use hair care products with a sunscreen wear a hat and wear sunglasses.

Keep in mind that sunscreen wears off. Put it on again if you stay out in the sun for more than two hours, and after you swim or do anything that makes you sweat.

The constant use of a photoprotector can promote an apparent reversion of photoaging giving skin a younger aspect. A great improvement may occur with suppression of exposure or photoprotection, even when started late in life. There is formation of neocollagen and new elastic fibers, giving the same aspect as seen in nonexposed skin

Look for sunscreen products that provide “multi-spectrum protection” and “broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection.” Make sure sunscreen has the right ingredients to protect you from both rays.

Two of the hottest new sunscreen technologies for protecting our exposed epidermis are Helioplex in the Neutrogena brand and Active Photobarrier Complex in the Aveeno product line. Both technologies stabilize the critical ingredient avobenzone (Parsol 1789), promoting maximum protection. Dr. Kimberly Edwards of Dermatology Associates, PA, suggests a sunscreen that uses this new technology. Neutrogena’s Ultrashear SPF 70 is her sunscreen of choice and she recommends that you make sure the words “broad spectrum” are written on the tube so you can protect against the wrinkling effects of the sun, as well.

Whittier spa offers services at affordable prices

WHITTIER - Seeing that exorbitant prices were keeping many from getting regular facials, Facelogic designed services that wouldn’t put customers in the “pore” house.

With about businesses charging nearly $125 for a facial, Facelogic’s $49 price for members and $59 price for non-members are appealing to a much broader range of clients, something the business model heavily relies on.

Facelogic is based in Carlsbad with local spas in Whittier and West Covina.

The Whittier franchise is owned by a mother and two daughters, who launched the business in December 2006.

“With the environment, there’s all this damage taking place to skin,” owner Gina Gonzalez said. “It’s important to get monthly facials if you are concerned about that.”

Gina says a key driver in retaining clients is the importance placed on looking young.

“This industry is growing,” she said. “People just don’t want to get old.”

The spa has a membership of 300 clients who pay $49 each month for a facial, a number they’d like to see double before year’s end. The business gets completely booked on the weekends.

Their youngest client is 9 and the oldest is 84 years old.

“We have six stations, and on the weekends we could really use eight,” Gina said.

One of the company’s many clients is La Habra resident Angie Durant.

“They offer a full-blown facial at a reasonable price so you can afford to do it every month,” said

Durant, adding that Facelogic’s services match that of higher-priced facials.

“They are just incredible,” she said.

The family has always wanted to open a business together, said Terri Gonzalez, Gina’s mother.

“My parents owned a business and so that passion has always been there,” she said.

That goal solidified after Gina heard about the Facelogic franchise through a friend and Terri researched the company. The three, including Terri’s other daughter, Lisa Perez, opened the second Facelogic location in California.

“We had never owned a business,” said Gina Gonzalez, who like her mother had worked for Southern California Edison. “So a franchise was a perfect fit because we needed a lot of hand-holding.”

Gina Gonzalez said her involvement in the community - particularly with the Whittier Chamber of Commerce, where she serves as an ambassador - has been key to the company’s growth.

“On basically a zero advertising budget, just putting our face out there has gotten us a lot of business,” Gina said. “Whittier is a close-knit business community.”

Another chamber ambassador, Whittier resident Mike Delgado, is also a member at Facelogic.

Delgado had never received a facial before, but decided to give the treatment a try.

“It’s one of those treats that people don’t take the time for, especially guys,” he said. “That’s a shame because I know a lot of my guy friends who could use an hour of relaxation.”

Relaxation is the draw for Delgado, although he said his wife has seen improvement in his skin. Gina estimates about 20 percent of her clients are male.

“If my business started slowing down, my membership at Facelogic would probably be up there with keeping the utilities on,” he said. “It’s something I look forward to every time I go in.”

Chocolate Facials for Easter…..

This article is brought to you by Spavelous.com.

Ahead of Easter, gets covered in melted chocolate

Chocolate facial: why the cocoa bean is your skin’s friend, not foe

What? CoCo2 Chocolate Facial

Why? A unique combination of unparalleled oxygen skin care products and beneficial properties contained in chocolate, guaranteed to stimulate all of the senses, leaving you feeling uplifted and looking radiant.

Easter may still be a few weeks away but, thanks to overzealous supermarket stockers, the shops have been choc-full of eggs for a while now.

So as your thoughts turn to chocolate, fear not for your complexion – the cocoa bean is your friend, not foe, in the battle for good skin. Forget old wives’ tales about chocolate causing spots, because the high-quality stuff has been used as part of facials, wraps and pedicures for years.

Why? The cocoa bean’s fibrous coating is a whizz at breaking down free radicals, giving creams containing the extract anti-oxidant and anti-ageing properties. That’s before you consider the mood-boosting properties of chocolate – just the smell can make the brain release endorphins into your system.

The cocoa bean is also full of magnesium, which helps to stimulate the body to produce progesterone, a vital hormone that plummets at certain times of the month and is ideal for tackling hormone or stress-related breakouts.

With that in mind, it’s no wonder top spas features both a chocolate facial and wrap high on their menu

My therapist, Louise, was friendly and professional and led me swiftly to a subtly decorated treatment room. Low lighting and stone-colored décor set the mood. The hour and a half of indulgence starts with a back, neck and shoulders massage – a nice touch, I found this help me relax and unwind before the serious work of the facial began. First, surface dirt and make-up is removed with Finest Chocolate Cleanser, using a warm flannel to open the pores.

Next, a gentle scrub dealt with blackheads, then Louise applied Vitamin H cream to overly dry areas of the skin (it’s also ideal for dealing with chapped lips). Herzog’s trademark oxygen eye cream, loved by supermodels and civilians alike, was applied next. This cream is excellent at tackling dark circles, and Linda Evangelista is one of the product’s many devotees.

Now it was on to the serious business of the Essential Mask. Dubbed ‘facelift in a tube’ because of its tightening properties, Herzog masks deliver two per cent oxygen to the skin – ideal for dehydrated city chicks like me. The mask felt cool and calming.

Next Louise covered my face in a layer of gauze, then painted Choco2 Chocolate & Oxygen over the top. The smell was divine, like being surrounded by Green & Blacks bars, the mask was warming and tingled in places as the cream got to work on problem areas. To keep the heat in and help the mask set, I was then wrapped in cling film, with ample breathing holes of course. Louise then gave me a quick hand massage, and then left me to drift as the mask worked its magic.

It was a little disconcerting being so thoroughly covered – I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone claustrophobic – but time passed quickly and Louise was soon removing the layers and rubbing in Chocolate Comfort Cream as a final moisturizing flourish.

Two days on, congested ‘hormonal spot’ areas are much improved – my skin looks well moisturized and springy. The use of chocolate products is much more than a gimmick, it’s a wonderful indulgent experience that can give your complexion a boost, as well as your mind.

Five Ways to Stay Young - Dr. Oz Anti Aging Plan

oprah-oz-on-anti-aging.png

5 ways to Staying Young with Dr. Oz Anti-Aging Checklist as seen on Oprah

This article is brought to you by Spavelous.com.

On Oprah we received quite a lot of information from Dr. Oz about ways that you can reverse aging. Through diet and exercise and lifestyle habits you can easily put into place an anti-aging plan.

Oprah is 54 years old and she said it has hit her like a bulldozer. You have to work harder just to stay in shape. In January Bob Greene has started this year’s ‘Best Life Diet.’

The Anti-Aging Ultimate Checklist is summarized as follows:

1. Food

2. Exercise

3. Meditate

4. Sleep and Sex

5. Vitamins

The popular series health books that have been co-authored by Dr. Memhet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen have been bestsellers. More discussion about anti-aging and reversing your age is discussed in their book, “You: Staying Young the Owner’s Manual for extending your Warranty.”

What foods should be in your refrigerator?

1. Antioxidants help to prevent damage during the process of oxidation. Dr. Oz uses the example of an apple turning brown when the air hits it but if you put on lemon juice it will prevent the oxidation from occurring. Dr. Oz showed us foods that are rich with antioxidants which are blueberries which he said are also referred to brainberries. Dark colored foods help to carry antioxidants. Five fistfuls of antioxidant rich foods a day. Colorful foods often are full of antioxidants.

2. Broccoli is beneficial in more than one way. Dr. Oz explains that this vegetable can help lower cancer risk. Oprah said that broccoli can also help the thyroid as well.

3. Dr. Oz continued to explain that tomatoes when they are heated up with a little oil will help to deliver the lycopene, which is another antioxidant.

4. Acai is a fruit that comes from the Rainforest in South America. It is loaded with antioxidants.

5. Green or White Tea was recommended by Dr. Oz . He suggested that you drink 4 cups of green or white tea each day. Polyphenols and catechins are found in the teas that are believed to contribute to health benefits. Green tea is very young and it that hasn’t been dried much, while white tea is not dried at all which is hopefully going to improve the antioxidant green tea health benefits.

6. Red Wine was recommended by Dr. Oz and suggested that 1 glass or serving was enough to help with getting resveratrol which helps in preventing your cells from aging. Dark grape juice will also have some resveratrol. Light colored grapes don’t offer the same kind of benefits.

Dr. Roizen co-author with Dr. Oz has created a test that he gave all of the audience members. Your Real Age

They had a 60 year old lady that Dr. Roizen said that she is closer to 48 years old. She looked really young. She has kept up with yoga for over 22 years. She does belly dancing too. She has a passion of reading and writing regularly.

Another lady was 63 years old and Dr. Roizen said that she is barely 50 years old based on her real age score. She looks great, but had a little bit of grey hair and wrinkles. Dr. Roizen said that she meditates for a long time; she sleeps well, and eats a balanced diet. Her passion in life is riding horses regularly. Dr. Roizen said that having a passion in life is worth 8 years of your anti-aging goals.

Another woman is 44 years old, but rates at almost 60 years old with the real age test. She is a smoker that does not exercise and has a lot of stress both at home and at work. She doesn’t deal well with the stress. She has smoked for over 30 years. They offered to pass her the blueberries, because she said to pass the blueberries. She gets the blueberries and said jokingly that she is not going to share this with the other audience members.

Spices full of anti-aging secrets.

Cinnamon can decrease blood sugar levels and lower cholesterol levels, especially in those that have type 2 diabetes.

Ginger can decrease your blood pressure, alleviate arthritis pain by reducing inflammation, and reduce your risk of cancer

Tumeric can also help arthritis sufferers. Tumeric can be found in Curry. Curry has been shown to relieve arthritis pain, and prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

Paprika and Cayenne Pepper has been shown to help reduce high blood pressure and to also improve circulation.

Rosemary is very important for learning. Dr. Oz showed Oprah rosemary and explained that it makes you smarter because it helps you focus.

Spices that are dried have almost the same effect as the fresh ones said Dr. Oz.

Fiber is important. Dr. Oz showed a bowl of steel cut oatmeal because you get more fiber that way. Instead of using hot water use apple juice said an audience member, it tastes really good prepared that way. Dr. Oz said to stay away from white flour. He showed artichoke pasta that has extra fiber.

Dr. Oz said that it has to say 100 percent whole grain to really be worth eating. He recommends eating beans for a good source of fiber.

A lady in the audience asked Dr. Oz about when she changed her diet and had to go bathroom at the most in-opportune time. She wants to know how to incorporate more fiber into her diet without the side effects of having to go bathroom all the time. Dr. Oz said that you have to work build up your dietary foundation of fiber intake a little bit at a time. If you use Beano it can help prevent gas from eating beans. Not mentioned on the show but equally important, adequate water intake can also be helpful when eating more dietary fiber.

Dr. Oz found chia seeds are full of fiber that come from South America. He gave Oprah a cupcake made with Chia. It adds more fiber and Omega 3 fatty acids. Oprah said that she takes the Flax seeds whole. Dr. Oz said that you have to grind up the flax seed to get the benefits of the Omega 3 fatty acids. You grind it up to get the healthy fats out of the foods. You can also get Omega 3 in walnuts. Fish has Omega 3 from spiralina algae. Dr. Oz made guacamole with spiralina algae. Oprah tasted it and it looked black in color, not that appealing. She said it wasn’t that bad.

Olive oil you need 1 – 2 tablespoon every day. Dr. Oz said that you should put the food in the olive and then put it in the pan. If you heat the oil to much it will cause the healthy oil to be damaged.

Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen said that the next part of the anti-aging battle is exercise. Another audience member asked Dr. Oz why she keeps gaining weight despite her exercising and eating healthy. Dr. Oz said to consider your waist as her health assessment and not necessarily the scale. She could have gained weight from exercising and muscle increase. He had her come onto the stage, and said that she probably is not pushing herself enough. He showed us how to calculate a heart rate formula to work within for cardiovascular exercise. The formula is take 220 and subtract your age. Take this result and multiply it by .80. This gives you your target heart rate. Her ideal heart rate is 140 beats per minute. She had her target heart rate goal be reached too fast and Dr. Oz thinks that she needs to work more on her fitness.

Dr. Oz showed exercises that can help build muscle mass. He demonstrated the front lunge. Don’t let your knee pass over your toe. The next is to do leg lifts by laying your back on the floor and lifting your legs off the ground to strengthen your core stomach area. Next he showed how to do pull ups. You can by a bar at home to install so you will have one easily accessible. He had a hard time originally doing pull-ups originally but he has worked up to around 20 of them after working at it. Dr. Oz did 21 pull-ups on the show.

Get the heart rate up to your target at least 3 times a week and do strength training 30 minutes weekly. You should always consult with your doctor before beginning any kind of exercise program as a pre-cautionary measure.

Dr. Oz said that you need to be flexible. You should be able to touch the floor. He showed various yoga poses; the plank, the up dog, the downward facing dog, salutation, and warrior pose. He also recommends tree pose for improving balance. He said to say yummmm and meditate during the yoga poses. Dr. Oz said to do it in your bathroom so that nobody will find you there. Prayer is mediation. You need a few moments to yourself.

Lack of sleep is aging us, said Dr. Oz. You need to get sleep to rejuvenate ourselves. Lack of sleep will strip years off of your age. When the sun went down before modern civilization we naturally slipped into sleep. He recommends recreating this by having a routine that quiets us down instead of stimulating us right before bedtime. He said if you don’t floss your teeth you could reduce your lifespan by 5 years.

Dr. Oz said that you need sex with your partner 2 to 3 times a week. Women benefits by getting a boost in oxytocin, and men get more testosterone. Dr. Oz joked to sleep naked and to install mirrors.

Oprah wanted to know more about vitamins. Dr. Oz discussed vitamin D. The biggest deficiency is with vitamin D. Take 1000 IU he suggests. Over half of all Americans are deficient in Vitamin D. This vitamin has been associated with preventing cancer, reducing heart problems, changing the outcomes risk factors for multiple sclerosis, and also risk factors associated with deficiencies in juvenile diabetes. Because of the sunscreen that is used in our society, even people in the south are getting less vitamin D from the sun.

Calcium with magnesium is important. Calcium supplements will constipate you, but the magnesium will help prevent that.

DHA omega 3 fish oil supplements he recommended.

Dr. Oz discussed multi-vitamins. He said to cut the vitamins in half with one being taken in the morning and one in the evening. Menstruating and pre-menopausal women will need some iron supplements. Pre-menopausal women take no more than 5000 IU of vitamin A. Men and post-menopausal women should take no more than 2500 IU of Vitamin A and they need no iron supplements. The multi-vitamin Dr. Oz recommends will be listed on Oprah.com.

Here is the checklist printout link for Dr. Oz anti-aging checklist sheet:

Dr. Oz said to take 2 baby Aspirin a day for those over the age of 40 to take this daily regimen. There is a chance of intestinal discomfort. Might Heart disease, cancer, wrinkles. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory drug.

Does it matter which multi-vitamin you should take. On the Oprah website they recommend the amounts that would be helpful.

The popular series health books that have been co-authored by Dr. Memhet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen have been bestsellers. More discussion about anti-aging and reversing your age is discussed in their book, “You: Staying Young the Owner’s Manual for extending your Warranty.”

Bladez Salon & Day Spa / Algonquin Il Day Spas / Illinois Spas

January is the perfect time to treat yourself to a spa day after all the shopping and family gathering stress in December. Jessica Barber, an aesthetician at Bladez Salon in Algonquin, recommends the “oxygenation facial” or the “pumice peel facial.” The oxygenation facial provides vitamins and minerals to the skin, as well as much-needed hydration. As a bonus, Barber said, the facial helps to eliminate fine lines.

“It’s going to help open up everything,” Barber said. “When your skin is breathing, it allows moisture to get in.”

The pumice peel facial also offers anti-aging benefits, Barber said, and rids the skin of dead cells.

“That one is going to really brighten and clean up the face,” she said.

Bladez also offers a number of relaxing body wraps, including the “herbology body wrap,” which Barber recommends this time of year.

“It’s like a heated thermal cocoon,” Barber said. “You come out, and your skin is fresh and alive.”

Barber said the salon also can custom-blend moisturizers for clients. Vitamin K is a crucial ingredient in moisturizers because it brightens the skin, she said.

Paraffin dips on the hands can work well for winter skin, said Denise Croft, licensed medical aesthetician and laser technician at Dermatique Laser and Skin in Geneva. Near Valentine’s Day, Croft said, the chocolate paraffin dips are popular.

“You lose a lot of moisture,” Croft said. “It’s important to take care of your skin all year round.”

Barber recommends using sunblock year round that has an SPF of 30 or higher.

“People forget that the sun is out this time of year,” she said. “UV rays still come through when it’s cloudy.”
