Spa visits are becoming more mainstream than luxury as people incorporate spa treatments into their daily lives. According to the International Spa Association, one in four adults has visited a spa.

The trends:

Living at the spa. Canyon Ranch, known for its upscale services and products, has created condo communities in Miami and other locations that include a spa and wellness center, concierge service, multiple swimming pools and restaurants with light, nutritious food.

Tropicana orange juice

New themes. As demand increases, spas are creating unique spa treatments and products from faraway lands, such as the Asian-inspired spa at the Mandarin Oriental Miami and the Bali-themed Mandara Spa at Walt Disney World’s Swan & Dolphin.

Toxic cleanup. At the Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota, Ionithermie treatments rid the body of toxins from caffeine, alcohol, tobacco and environmental pollutants.

Total fitness. Spas are incorporating classes on healthy cooking, life balance and fitness.

On the go. Spa owners are offering treatments on the go with mobile spas and home spa parties.

Medical spas. This is the fastest-growing segment of the industry, with a 69% increase in facilities from 2003 to 2005. Spa visitors are booking appointments for chemical peels, microdermabrasion and body wraps.

His and her treatments. Women traditionally have formed the customer base for most spas. But now men spas make up about 31% of spa clientele — especially when they’re traveling. Facilities are designing gender-specific experiences. Some spas, like the one at Starwood-branded Atlantic Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, tout side-by-side massages for couples.

Double the pleasure. Spas are offering treatments that involve two or more massage therapists, sometimes working on customers at the same time.

Ma and spa. Special services and products are available for pregnancy spa services and babies.

World Travel Market Massages Health

A groundbreaking initiative that aims to make English the international language for the spa industry will be launched at World Travel Market as part of this year’s Spa, Health and Wellness focus. Working with the British International Spa Association (BISA) and the Spa Research Fellowship, the focus will span all four days of the leading business to business event at ExCeL London (Monday 12 –Thursday 15 November).

This will include the Israeli Government Tourist Office (IGTO), who is once again linking with AHAVA Essential Dead Sea Treatments to bring delegates the benefits of the worlds oldest natural spa, the Dead Sea. As the lowest place on earth and renowned for its rejuvenating properties, the Dead Sea has the highest concentration of minerals on the planet and produces mineral-rich mud, proven to aid the healing of many skin conditions..   Robert Czik, Managing Director of spa product manufacturer SpaFind Skincare, is unveiling details of the new spa training college being set up in Kent, UK. “The plan is to get international spa operators to send their therapists to the UK, both to improve their technique and learn specialist spa English,” explained Czik.

“We hope it will appeal to large hotel groups, such as Hyatt, but also national spa associations overseas,” explained Czik.  He said that the position of English already as an international business language made it the obvious choice for spa students.

The initiative has already won over spa industry bosses in China, who are keen to build the treatment sector to aid their tourism development.  At the end of November the school is expecting to welcome its first batch of overseas students – 35 would-be therapists from Japan – who will brush up their language skills.

Health Boom  World Travel Market’s Health and Wellness focus is a reflection of the phenomenal growth of spa holidays, according to Fiona Jeffery, the event’s chairman.

“Research shows that the industry has grown 40% in the past three years alone”, said Jeffery.  “The sheer size of the market is mind-boggling. There are now more spas in the US alone (15,699) than there are Starbucks coffee shops in the world (13,728).”

“There are two definite trends,” explained Dr Osborne. “The first is for spas to align themselves with big brands such as ESPA. They can buy the products in bulk and get a whole regime of support, including staff training.

“There is also a trend towards the exotic. Creating new products sets you apart. Spas often look to the local culture, say using coconut milk in the Caribbean, to add an element of ethnicity to their offering.  Seminar Program The three Spa, Health and Wellness seminars are:

 Sustaining credibility - avoiding customer disillusionment.Dr. Bruce Osborne - Spas Research Fellowship, Monday 12 November

 The UK Market for Health Tourism, Tuesday 13 November, 11.00 hrsSpeaker: Keith Pollard, Managing Director, Treatment Abroad, UK leading web portal for medical tourism.

Coffee… It Does A Body Good!

That coffee you’re enjoying doesn’t just taste great; it is also good for you! In fact, according to Dr. Joe Vinson, a scientist who studies the antioxidant content of foods has indicated that coffee is the number one source of antioxidants in the American diet. But, coffee is more then an antioxidant, it is beneficial for your health internally and new finding show that it is also good for your skin externally.

Coffee as an Antioxidant

In recent years, coffee addicts around the world have welcomed the news that coffee may actually have antioxidant properties equal to that of black tea. These antioxidant components can supplement what people normally get from fruits and vegetables. Drinking one or two cups of coffee a day can apparently fight free radical damaging molecules and may even reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Coffee Has More Fiber than Orange Juice

Doctors tell us that fiber is good for us and that antioxidants help keep us young and disease free. Well, coffee delivers on both counts. In a Spanish study, scientists concluded that brewed coffee contained a significantly higher amount of soluble dietary fiber…than other common beverages. Coffee’s dietary fiber contains a large amount of associated antioxidant phenolics.

Spa services at home lure folks to luxury apartments

 spa-apartment.jpg

Spa-inspired amenities raising the bar for luxury apartment living. New services include massages, lifestyle advisers and climbing walls.

When Glenn Becker began hunting for a three-bedroom apartment for his family, he sought the typical luxuries that many developers now sandwich into space-challenged Manhattan condominiums: a gym. Miraval Living, shown in this rendering, will offer spa-inspired amenities when it opens later this year.

It offers spa-inspired amenities that raise the bar for luxury apartment living to a level normally found at A-list resorts.

Among the choices at Miraval, in addition to the usual gym niceties: a rock climbing wall; a health-food cafe; health consultations and workshops; lifestyle advisers; programs with doctors and other experts in integrative medicine, sleep, sex and nutrition; and spa services including facials, massages, scrubs and reflexology.

“It will feel like a vacation resort, while working and living in New York City,” he says.

At Miraval Living in New York, he will periodically offer workshops and lectures.

It’s healthy urban living,” says Weil, who is also involved with a Miraval resort in Costa Rica.

– Canyon Ranch, another high-end spa resort, is branching out with Canyon Ranch Living condos in Miami Beach, Florida, around year’s end, and in Chicago, Illinois, in 2011. — In Lower Manhattan, a condo called The Setai is set to open in early 2008 and likewise offers comprehensive resort amenities, including a 12,000-square-foot spa.
