ADVENTURE SPA | Arizona dietitian wants guests to maintain healthy lifestyle

Lots of spa retreats do a great job getting guests to eat right and exercise while they’re there. But as soon as they get home and unpack, it’s back to nightly dates with Ben & Jerry and other bad habits.

Devon Metz watched this pattern play out repeatedly during her years working at some of the most high-end destination spas in the country.

Ellen McGann (left) and her hiking group take a snack break. There were hikes for beginners as well as advanced trekkers.

PRICE: Devon Hiking Spa vacations cost $2,900 per person, based on double occupancy. Solo travelers tack on $500 for their own room. The price includes five nights at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, all meals, two spa services, airport departure shuttle, backpack, pedometer and other little extras.

DATES: Eight trips are scheduled this year. They are: May 23-28; June 25-30; July 11-16; July 25-30; Nov. 16-21; Nov. 30-Dec. 5; Dec. 7-12; Dec. 14-19

The 31-year-old dietitian and fitness instructor figured there had to be a better way to help guests keep a healthy lifestyle going long after checkout. Late last year, Metz began offering six-day getaways aimed at just that. Held in the sunny, Southwest city of Tucson, Ariz., Devon Hiking Spa vacations focus on nutrition and fitness in a “real world” way, Metz said.

“Most places just put a plate in front of you and you’re not really learning how to eat out and make the right choices,” she said. “We take people out to real restaurants each night and have them navigate the menu. We do a supermarket tour and learn how to really read the ingredient list.

“We try to do the same thing with exercise,” Metz added. “We’ll use a resistance band instead of heavy equipment and give them the band to take home with a list of exercises to do.”

The idea of a week away from the office hiking past saguaro cacti in the Arizona mountains, learning how to have a better diet and enjoying some relaxing massages sounded like the perfect escape to Ellen McGann. This Hinsdale banking executive deserved an escape. The 48-year-old mother had recently wrapped up eight rounds of chemotherapy and 28 radiation treatments after having surgery for breast cancer.

“I viewed it as the ultimate detox,” McGann said. “I’d wanted to do a health spa thing my entire life. I thought, ‘Why not just take a week off work and focus on myself, focus on diet, exercise and healthy living?’ “

McGann was one of 12 who signed up for the inaugural Devon Hiking Spa vacation in December. Most of the guests were women, ranging in age from their late 20s to 50s. And most were like McGann, traveling on their own. Base camp was the swanky Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

A typical day started around 7 a.m. with a half-hour of stretching followed by breakfast in the hotel. Then it was time for an hour-long class that usually revolved around nutrition. After that, everyone laced up their hiking boots and hit the trail, where people had the option of choosing between guided hikes for beginners or advanced trekkers.

Guests who wanted more of a fitness fix could take a post-hike class in pilates, yoga or strength-building resistance bands and then treat their sore muscles to a massage; two spa treatments came with the package.

In the evening, everyone got together for dinner at a local restaurant to practice what was preached.

“Every night before dinner we went over what to order, what questions to ask,” McGann said. “You do things like mindful eating exercises, where you put your fork down between every bite.

“A lot of the stuff I learned I came home and taught my husband,” she added. “We tend to go out to dinner a lot. I’m not afraid anymore to ask the restaurant for something special, like putting the sauce on the side or skipping the breading. My husband’s lost about 15 pounds since I got back.”

During her stint in Tucson, McGann tried Pilates for the first time. She liked it so much, she now does it once a week. She’s also making a weekly visit to a personal trainer.

“I’m still working on the exercise thing,” McGann said. “It’s my worst category.”

About once every three weeks, McGann gets an e-mail from Metz asking how she’s doing and whether she’s meeting her goals.

“I love the follow-up,” said McGann, who plans to show Metz her progress in person when she takes another Devon Hiking Spa vacation later this year.

McGann finished her cancer treatments a year ago this month.

She said that when you’re in the midst of battling something as formidable as cancer, “you don’t feel like you’re ever going to get on the other side . . . focusing on myself and my health during that week helped push me to the other side.”

10 New beauty Trends

spa-trends-2008.png

This article is brought to you by Spavelous.com.

Last year, it was all about ideal sleep, green spas and detox in the world of beauty. Skin-care companies came out with organic lines, and spas showed up in airports and fused several concepts into one (think yoga with massage, water and shiatsu, or yoga and Pilates). Mineral makeup lines took off and anti-aging products flooded the market.

The new year means a slew of new products and treatments have hit the market. We sorted through the trends to pick out the ones you should be watching, and trying out, as 2008 progresses.

HAIRY SITUATION

Hair product companies have realized that some of your hair’s trouble actually starts at the scalp. Look for a renewed push for products that stimulate and minimize oil on the scalp, such as J.R. Lazartigue Massage Gel for deep conditioning, or prep the scalp for treatments, such as Rene Furterer’s Complexe 5. Best of all, they stimulate hair growth.

STICK YOUR NECK OUT

The face no longer takes center stage with its assortment of moisturizers, serums and creams. The neck and bust now have products to call their own. These two areas — bogged down by gravity and exposed to the sun without protection — tend to show signs of aging before the face. Companies such as RèVive, Sisley, This Works and Shiseido have created products that specifically target these areas.

THE FIRM

Speaking of firming, look for more products that tout their ability to firm and lift. But it’s mainly a marketing ploy. When you check out the labels, you’ll notice the same ingredients that you find to treat wrinkles and blotchy skin — retinol, vitamin C and peptides.

LASHING OUT

Several years ago, Jan Marini came out with an eyelash conditioner that helped you grow out your lashes. The FDA pulled it from the market last November when it discovered prostaglandin bimatoprost, a drug used to prevent glaucoma, was used and accused Jan Marini of promoting an “unapproved and misbranded drug” because the company said its product could grow lashes. Now, look for products, such as RevitaLash and Osmotics FNS Nutrilash, that make your lashes less brittle and less prone to breakage.

PEEL OUT

Spas have been touting the advantages of chemical peels for years, but now skin-care companies are including these treatments in their own lines. Lower in acids and higher in skin soothers, at-home chemical peels have cropped up in many high-end skin-care lines. Natura Bisse carries its GlycoLine Glyco Extreme Peel, the strongest at-home peel on the market, says Kim Katunis, a makeup artist and aesthetician, but other gentler peels come from Kinerase, MD Skincare and La Prairie.

DOUBLE DUTY

Your makeup, specifically eye cosmetics, will not only color your eyelids but also work double time to prevent aging. Kimiko Beauty’s Lifting eye shadow products contain Hydra-FirmaLift, which helps lift the eye. A new line coming to Neiman Marcus, 29 Cosmetics, contains anti-oxidant grape seed extract, Katunis says. The mineral makeup craze is fueling this movement to leave skin in better condition once the makeup comes off. Also look for mineral lines to make their way into department stores. Laura Mercier just expanded her line of mineral makeup to include eye shadows and blush.

AMAZON WOMAN

Beauty companies have found that plants indigenous to the Amazon basin contain high antioxidants and skin-nourishing oils. The skin-care line Brazilian Fruit contains rainforest ingredients such as açai, maracujá passion fruit and guaraná fruit. Even some mainstream brands such as Kiehl’s and Borba have used guanabana and yerba maté in their product lines. High-end skin-care lines such as Beauty by Clinica Ivo Pitanguy rely on Amazon plants to produce some of their key ingredients.

A NATURAL STANDARD

The USDA already has a seal for organic products that are at least 95 percent organic. Now there’s a push to do the same with natural products. According to Mike Indursky, chief marketing officer for Burt’s Bees, which launched the initiative, the Natural Standard Seal will require at least 95 percent natural ingredients and pure processing methods.

SKIN TOOLS

Ever since Oprah Winfrey featured the Clarisonic Skin Brush on her favorite things show last December, women have learned that soap and a washcloth may not be enough to clean their skin. Now even more spalike tools are coming into the home. Look for new products such as the Zeno Acne Clearing Device and the Marvel-Mini Rejuvenating Facial Light Therapy Red that helps eliminate fine lines and wrinkles and increases the skin’s elasticity using red light therapy.

THE MIDAS TOUCH

Gold Facial has become the ingredient du jour in the spa industry. Spa at Four Seasons features the Golden Veil Facial using Fleur’s products such as the Eldora Golden Supreme Mask and Golden Youth Concentrate. Heather Herbold, lead aesthetician at the spa, says that the facial replenishes natural minerals that are normally depleted on a daily basis. The heated, three-layer mask at the center of the treatment lifts skin and leaves you with the golden glow.

Skin-care and beauty companies have followed the golden way. Chantecaille, Guerlain, INA and La Prairie each created everything from skin-care products to makeup lines that contain gold, and carry prices to match.

OVERCOMING FEAR at MIRAVAL RESORT

This spa article is brought to you by Spavelous.com.

To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom –Bertrand Russell.  Whether it’s atop a 32-foot pole or coming face to face with a 1,000+ pound animal, Miraval offers guests a variety of ways to deal with fear.“I can’t tell you how many very successful people I work with tell me their greatest fear is that somebody’s going to find out they’re clueless,” says Wyatt Webb, creator of Miraval’s signature Equine Experience and author of two books (see sidebar). “Most people wake up to fear and self-doubt every day.”

Fear takes many forms; for some it might be an object or an animal, a situation, or a person. In a nutshell, fear is disabling beliefs you carry in yourself that prevent you from living a productive, healthy and inspired life.

Fear is a great motivator,” says Joe MacDonald, manager of Miraval’s Challenge Department, which offers high-rope activities like the Quantum Leap. Quantum Leap challenges people to climb a 32-foot pole, stand atop it and then leap off.“Fear correlates with the future,” adds Joe. “When you’re out of the moment — living in the future of what you think could happen, which is often a flawed perspective — you tend to create fear and anxiety.”

Many of the guests who book private one-on-one classes with Miraval’s trail-riding guides do so to work through their fear of horses. “Some come to us after taking the Equine Experience, and some come see us so that they can go through it in the first place,” says Amy Armour of Miraval’s Purple Sage Ranch.According to Amy, once people are given the opportunity to learn more about horse behavior by bonding with a horse and taking part in a relaxing trail ride, their fear is significantly reduced.“I’ve yet to deal with anyone who was more fearful of horses after they’ve finished a class,” says Amy.

Five STEPS

In his book Five Steps for Overcoming Fear and Self Doubt, Journey into Present-Moment Time, Wyatt uses his 20 years of experience as a licensed counselor to examine his own fears and self-doubts.

Here are his 5 steps for overcoming fear.

1: Acknowledge the fear.

2. Quantify the fear.

3. Openly admit to the worst-case scenario.

4. Gather information and support to avoid the worst case.

5. As the fear dissipates, celebrate the absence of fear.

Spa visits are becoming more mainstream than luxury as people incorporate spa treatments into their daily lives. According to the International Spa Association, one in four adults has visited a spa.

The trends:

Living at the spa. Canyon Ranch, known for its upscale services and products, has created condo communities in Miami and other locations that include a spa and wellness center, concierge service, multiple swimming pools and restaurants with light, nutritious food.

Tropicana orange juice

New themes. As demand increases, spas are creating unique spa treatments and products from faraway lands, such as the Asian-inspired spa at the Mandarin Oriental Miami and the Bali-themed Mandara Spa at Walt Disney World’s Swan & Dolphin.

Toxic cleanup. At the Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota, Ionithermie treatments rid the body of toxins from caffeine, alcohol, tobacco and environmental pollutants.

Total fitness. Spas are incorporating classes on healthy cooking, life balance and fitness.

On the go. Spa owners are offering treatments on the go with mobile spas and home spa parties.

Medical spas. This is the fastest-growing segment of the industry, with a 69% increase in facilities from 2003 to 2005. Spa visitors are booking appointments for chemical peels, microdermabrasion and body wraps.

His and her treatments. Women traditionally have formed the customer base for most spas. But now men spas make up about 31% of spa clientele — especially when they’re traveling. Facilities are designing gender-specific experiences. Some spas, like the one at Starwood-branded Atlantic Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, tout side-by-side massages for couples.

Double the pleasure. Spas are offering treatments that involve two or more massage therapists, sometimes working on customers at the same time.

Ma and spa. Special services and products are available for pregnancy spa services and babies.
