Massage business essential in helping people relax

Ambient light illuminated the room, lulling the client into a relaxed state and providing just enough luminescence for the therapist to follow the lines of her muscles.

Outside, cars sped past on Del Prado Boulevard. But inside Body Essential Massage, massage therapist George Kolebas’ room was quiet, serene. It was a much more stressful event that led client Heide Gabriel-Zwaetz to seek the help of massage therapy. [Read more →]

Hotel Roanoke adds in room spa services

Spa services now offered by Hotel Roanoke

The Hotel Roanoke now offers in-room spa services.

Susan Merryman stayed up nights trying to figure out how to incorporate spa services into a 125-year-old hotel.

Everything needed to be portable, so she searched high and low to find the perfect pedicure basins, manicure table and massage tables with wheels.
The owner of On Location Spa Services in Roanoke, wanted to create the most unobtrusive, relaxing and exclusive getaway for her clients.
Next, the 20-year spa-therapy veteran assembled a staff of 10 — including massage therapists, an aesthetician and a hairstylist.

Now, visitors and guests of the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center can treat themselves to soothing massages, facials, manicures, pedicures, makeup applications and hairstyles in a guestroom.
A new spa suite is also available on the first floor, where there is room for couples and private parties.

“It is the ultimate experience to have the services done in the privacy of their hotel room,” said Merryman, who said the services are unique to Southwest Virginia hotels.

Services are available from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Merryman said Saturday nights is a popular time for couples massages.
The hotel began offering services May 1 and, within the first month, more than 80 services were requested, she said.

Gary Walton, general manager of the Hotel Roanoke, said when Merryman approached him with an idea to add a spa to the hotel’s services, he was intrigued.

But he wasn’t quite sure if it would work for the hotel.
After doing some research, Walton said he found that most hotels offering this type of service were tapping into a niche audience.
“This is just another service that guests are looking for today in the world of hotels today,” he said.

The addition of spa services is catering to hotel patrons who value pampering themselves, he explained.
“In society today, people pamper themselves. They look for opportunities to have stress relief,” he said.

The hotel is considering opening a full-pledged spa in the future. Demand for Merryman’s services will help hotel officials make the decision.
If this happens, private sessions be available, Walton said.
“People are looking for that type of quality and service in a hotel,” Walton said.

The new service not only benefits guests staying at the hotel, but also welcomes locals to experience the hotel-exclusive treatments.
“By coming to the Hotel Roanoke, locals can get a private mini-vacation with all the services,” she said.

Jessica and Parker Humphreys, residents of Roanoke, went in for a hour-long full-body massage as a cap off to a beach vacation on Wednesday.
They had their own reserved room complete with candle light and mood music.

“I thought it was wonderful, I really enjoyed having our own room,” she said.
Locals seeking a romantic weekend getaway are not the only ones taking advantage of the new spa services. Busy businesspeople are, too.

One customer came in during her lunch break for a quick pedicure, while other locals come in after work, order some wine and hors d’oeuvres and let the therapists massage their stress from work away.
Bonney Bashore, a pharmaceutical representative, said she travels to Roanoke once a week for business.

Tuesday night she received a massage. She said when she called the hotel to ask for spa recommendations, she wasn’t expecting to hear that the hotel had its own spa service.
“It is wonderful. It’s very convenient for the business traveler and a great service for a hotel to have,” she said.

Although the service is very convenient, one complaint Bashore had was the price. She said the hotel spa services are more expensive than other spas she has visited in town.

For example, Body Sense Day Spa and Clinic on Second Street in Southwest Roanoke offers a relaxation massage starting at $50 for a 50-minute session. The hotel offers hour-long massages starting at $110.
But many of Merryman’s customers agree that the quality, privacy and convenience are worth every cent.

Spa services are just one way the historical hotel continues to keep up with the ever-changing industry, Walton said.
“As we step into the next century, we are continuing with the history of the hotel,” he said.
“When you’re a property that’s 125 years old, there’s a lot of firsts and new services that have been introduced over the years.”

GAIA Anderson Hotel & Spa - American Canyon California - LEED Gold

Spa_Gaia_Napa_Valley_Hotel_And_Spa.png

This article is brought to you by Spavelous.com. http://www.spavelous.com

GAIA Anderson Hotel & Spa Opens as America’s first LEED Gold Certified Hotel

GAIA Anderson Hotel & Spa, built for $14 million, opened on May 1, 2008 and is the latest creation from Mr. Wen Chang, creator of America’s first, LEED Gold certified hotel, Gaia Napa Valley Hotel and Spa in American Canyon, California.

Maintaining his very high standards for the ultimate in an eco-friendly hotel, Mr. Chang directed the construction crew in the usage of state-of-the-art green building practices that include 122 totally “green” rooms - painted with special, low-VOC paints, recycled carpets, state of the art and energy-saving air conditioners and heaters that use 15% less energy. Behind the walls, all the wood used in construction was certified as new growth wood.

Outside the hotel, on 11 beautiful acres of natural landscaping, touched by the Sacramento River, the landscaping is chemical-free.

Building With A Heart

The eco-friendly hotel features a full-service restaurant and more than 5,000 square feet of meeting space, all built under the rigorous construction guidelines of the U.S. Green Building Council. Every detail is important. Exceeding the standards of the USGBC, nearly 90% of the wood used in the construction of the hotel is certified as sustainably-harvested and comes from local timber sources within 500 miles of the hotel’s location.

Solar lighting, natural light from the sun, illuminates the public areas of the hotel through SolaTubes that focus the light of the sun into these areas, replacing electric lights and energy consumption during the day. Solar power provides more than 12% of the hotel’s electrical needs, while a real-time display in the lobby shows how much energy and water is being used by the hotel, and how much CO2 - a common gas implicated in global warming - is being saved due to sophisticated energy conservation at the hotel.

Every inch of the grounds, with the hotel situated on 11 acres of beautiful land touched by the Sacramento river, are totally chemical-free with no herbicides, pesticides or toxic chemicals used in the landscaping.

No detail is overlooked. Scraps of wood, cardboard and metal left over from the nearly completed construction are recycled.

Gaia’s Green Features

Wood Based Materials. All lumber used for the hotel is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council). The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international network to promote responsible management of the world’s forests.

Coatings, Adhesives and Sealants. Low VOC (volatile organic compound) sealants and adhesives were used throughout the hotel for carpet, construction. Low VOC paints were used throughout the hotel. Both these strategies help improve the air quality within the hotel and have a positive effect on human health by improving the quality of air.

Carpet. Carpet with recycled content. Our carpets contain post consumer recycled material in the backing, fiber and pad. Construction Waste Management. The contractor is committed to implementing waste diversion practices as an integral part of their operations. They provided a recycling station for paints. The contractor also provided a recycling station for cardboard. During construction, bins were placed on the property primarily for cardboard. All cardboard were recycled on the premises.

Stone. All restrooms use recycled tiles and granite.

Water. The project achieved a water use reduction of about 40%. DDLow flush toilets. All toilets produce 1 gpf (gallon per flush). Standard toilets produce 1.6 gallons per flush. All of our guestrooms are equipped with low flow showerheads. The Koi pond uses recycled water from the site, which is then filtered and cleaned prior to entering the pond.

Environmental Quality. Appropriately sized and efficient HVAC units are used throughout. These units are quieter and more efficient than standard HVAC systems and use a more environmentally friendly refrigerant than is standard. Aluminum exterior grates were used in all entrances of the property. This helps to minimize dust and particulates entering the building, therefore improving air quality.

Energy. All windows used are efficient, low energy transmittable and reduce glare. Solatube tubular skylights are used throughout the hotel including our conference rooms, lobby and the hallways. These skylights magnify the sun’s rays to deliver abundant light into the property interior spaces during the day. We save electricity by using these skylights. Solar panel provides 10% of our electricity. Cool reflective roof reflect heat therefore saving money in cooling costs.

Recycling. Recycling bins in rooms and around property. Newspapers are not delivered to each occupied room. Newspapers are located in the lobby available for guests who actually read them. Bulk soap and shower dispensers are used in all guest rooms. This helps to eliminate hundreds of pounds of plastic containers and packaging daily from mini shower bottles and soap. Only recycled paper products are used at the hotel.

Landscaping. Chemical free landscaping. All of the fertilizers used for landscaping are all natural and chemical free. Native and climate-adaptive plants were used so water use for irrigating is very limited.

Cleaning. Environmentally friendly cleaning products are used to clean the property.

This is a remarkable, one-of-a-kind “Green” hotel - an environmentally sustainable hotel - that is setting a trend for new, eco-conscious travelers who expect to travel as they live: being environmentally conscious, walking the talk with a minimal impact on the earth and usage of as many recycled and natural products, and energy saving products, as humanly possible.

New Paradise Valley Arizona - Montelucia Resort & Spa to open in August

New Paradise Valley Arizona - Montelucia Resort & Spa to open in August

The Valley’s newest resort spa will have a Spanish name, Moorish architecture, Moroccan décor and an Arabic ritual bath.

Welcome to Joya, Spanish for jewel, which will open in August at the 293-room InterContinental Montelucia Resort & Spa in Paradise Valley.

Reporters and other guests got a recent tour of the two-story, 31,000-square-foot palace of pampering designed by Sylvia Sepielli, a world-known spa expert and consultant.

“We’re very excited about the spa. We want to be one of the best spas in Arizona attached to a fantastic resort. The spa is our signature element,” said Valeriano Antonioli, resort managing director.

What the spa will look like when completed is left up to the imagination as construction work continues. But some of the finishing touches already are in progress from the installation of tiles to vibrant paint color choices.

Antonioli said the spa will offer space. There could have been as many as 41 treatment rooms, but there will only be 19.

“Space is luxury,” Antonioli said.

The spa will employ about 45 in the beginning. That number is expected to climb to 140 in a year or two, said Sabrina Cormack, spa and retail director.

“Joya is Spanish meaning jewel, but also we want it to mean to us that you’re having a joyful experience here,” Cormack said.

Treatments will include everything from henna tanning and tattooing, mineral and clay wraps, Moroccan-inspired organic facial and body care, and spa treatments featuring real gold and crushed diamonds.

One-hour treatments will start at $155. Private memberships will start at $15,000.

Discovering the Hammam world

Spa guests will be treated to seven “Jewels of Discovery,” which includes passing through a dome with an exact replica of the night sky in Granada, Spain, and partaking in a traditional Hammam experience. Hammam is an Arabic word for bathhouse, Cormack said.

The cleansing Hammam ritual bath will be a first in the Valley. Montelucia’s will include a warming room, scrub room, steam room, cold plunge, whirlpool, sauna, and relaxation lounge.

Hammams remain popular in Turkey and other countries and reportedly evolved from the Roman thermal bath.

“We are absolutely thrilled to see this resort and spa come to fruition,” Sacco said.

Almost 8 million people visit the Northeast Valley annually, said Sacco, adding that they are affluent and looking for reasons to come back and the new Montelucia would be one reason.

The resort, southeast of Lincoln Drive and Tatum Boulevard, will draw a new visitor, one familiar with the InterContinental name, especially the international guest, Sacco added.

“We’re really looking forward to teaming up with Montelucia for the incredible product that it has but also its ability to help us mine some new markets,” Sacco said.

Soothing views of Camelback

Visitors will be able to enjoy a rejuvenating treatment, she said, and the scenic Sonoran Desert landscape that sets the area apart. The spa offers views of Camelback Mountain.

“No matter what our lifestyle is like, everyone is wanting to decompress and rejuvenate, and especially the more affluent visitors who are so time starved,” Sacco said.

Antonioli said the goal is to create the perfect moment for guests.

“This is what we want to do is make the people happy,” he said.

But the spa also must be unique, Antonioli added. One package that will be offered will be a dinner for two at the spa.

“We will serve the dinner on a table, everything you need, and then we leave,” he said

Blue Violet Mansion becomes White House Inn and Spa

Cosmetic renovations are moving quickly on Tom and Darcy Tunt’s White House Inn & Spa, transforming the former Blue Violet Mansion Victorian style bed and breakfast into a modern, contemporary guest house.

Say good-bye to Blue and hello to White as downtown’s newest luxury inn, the White House Inn and Spa prepares to debut.

Taking on an ambitious restoration, local businesswoman Darcy Tunt has purchased one of Napa’s older historic homes, an elegant 1886 Queen Anne Victorian on Brown Street, formerly known as the Blue Violet Mansion bed and breakfast.

Tunt plans to reopen the historic home in June as the White House Inn and Spa.

But Tunt’s no newcomer to the lodging and hospitality business. Since 2001 she’s owned and operated the luxury inn, 1801 First.

“We always knew we wanted to expand,” said Tunt. “It was time for us to expand to continue to grow our business.” While Tunt runs the daily business operations, her husband Tom is her partner.

Closing on the three-story home, purchased for $5.25 million, Tunt immediately began rapid-fire renovations at the site. She has a vision for the formerly Victorian styled bed and breakfast. “We’re starting from scratch,” said Tunt.

While “B&B” has traditional connotations, when the renovation is complete, the mansion will be Victorian in architecture only, she said. Inside guests will find contemporary and luxurious surroundings in a clean, minimal style. “It will be a different experience than a traditional B&B,” said Tunt.

When the renovation is complete, the inn’s 17 rooms will feature “urban styled, chic furnishings,” including flat screen TVs, Wi-Fi and other modern amenities, she said. “You’re going to feel like you are in a London flat — a real urban feel,” she said.

Tunt’s plan also includes what she calls “going green.” Environmentally-minded practices at the White House will include earth-friendly cleaning products, recycled paint, fabrics, sustainable flooring, edible gardens, new individual HVAC systems — even the towels will be made of bamboo fiber, she said.

While major renovations continue, it’s the little details that seem to please Tunt. On a tour, she paused to admire gold leaf recently applied to ball-shaped ornamental details around the home.

“I think it’s going to be a nice improvement to the neighborhood. We’re excited about being a part of downtown Napa,” she said.

Tunt explained the new name for the mansion. At one point the home at 443 Brown Street was white, she said. But the new name also speaks of elegance, presence and stateliness. “And that’s what it’s going to be.”

Besides its architecture and historical setting, Tunt said the mansion has another big selling point — it is one of a limited number of downtown inns permitted to host weddings, which will be a significant part of their business.

“We want to create a premier wedding and event venue,” she said.

Not only does Tunt have her hands full with the remodel, she’s also training staff, setting up computer systems and launching a website. “It’s a big project. I’m basically creating a start up business in seven weeks,” said Tunt, who has a background in real estate, sales and marketing.

“There are moments when I have to step back and take a deep breath, but I am so excited and I know this will be a very successful and wonderful property for others to enjoy.”

Zapora Spa Salon Monrovia Indiana - Men Spa - Special Services

Zapora Salon Spa provides a calming atmosphere

This old-fashioned barber chair at Zapora Salon Spa in Monrovia IN will welcome male clients who want a haircut and hot shave. The salon also offers massage, permanent makeup and wig services for clients and cancer patients.

This old-fashioned barber chair at Zapora Salon Spa in Monrovia will welcome male clients who want a haircut and hot shave. The salon also offers massage, permanent makeup and wig services for clients and cancer patients.

At first, it seems odd that a minister who does tent revivals at the Wilbur Community Center is opening a beauty salon and spa in the heart of Monrovia. But after talking to his daughter, Amanda, the picture becomes clearer. Gary Bivens and his family want people who have been battered by life’s fast pace to come in, get calm and improve their looks and lifestyle at the same time.

Bivens works for Open Door Ministries, and his Christian-based business called Zapora will service men and women, cancer patients and those with special cosmetic problems.

Zapora comes from the Hebrew word Zappora, which means beauty,” Amanda said.

The salon will open its doors for the public on Monday, but the grand opening has not been scheduled yet. The staff is taking appointments now for prom services and other clients.

Bivens’ prized possession at the shop next to David Burgess’s chiropractic office on Ind. 39 is an old-fashioned barber chair. Male customers can have a haircut and hot shave with towels while relaxing in the bright red chair. They can also buy American Crew haircare products. Burgess is leasing the space to Bivens and has been in practice for eight years.

Services for women include massage, haircuts, teeth whitening, styling, Nail manicures, pedicures and hair products such as Scruples, True Integrity and OPI. Amanda said there will be five stylists and three massage therapists, trained in all the product lines. The spa will also offer permanent makeup for beauty marks, lips, eyebrows and eyelids, but the colors are not tattoo inks. “We will use Premier Pigments, which are designed for facial skin and safe for MRI tests,” she said. “People can also get pigment on the inner part of their bottom eyelid.

Clients will do a skin test and have a consultation before getting the service and fill out a form with their medical history. Amanda said the salon staff must be licensed to do the pigments and maintain sanitary conditions for all Zapora’s services. She and her mother, Patty, took an intensive two-week program in Texas on the products and their application. Amanda said the staff has also been undergoing special training from product representatives who come from all over the state.

“Our distributor, Victory, has set up the training sessions for us,” she said. “Each of our employees has a good background and will be knowledgable with all our products.”

The salon has a private room for clients who need wig fitting and styling and other rooms for massage and pigmentation. There is also a bathroom and shower on site.

To make the salon experience complete, Gary Bivens has stocked Kerusso T-shirts, which are theme based for Christian clients, organ donors, bikers, cancer survivors and others. They also carry Cooljamaz, which are pajamas for women who suffer from night sweats, reactions to chemotherapy and menopausal hot flashes. Amanda said the material quickly absorbs perspiration. Clients can also purchase detoxifying teas in different flavors. They are in concentrated form and can just be added to a glass of water.

The Bivens family and their staff will not be pushing religion, but simply providing an atmosphere where people can unwind and relax - and be cared for.

Bivens said he is also carrying some dainty necklaces and other jewelry at the shop.

He owns Truth Trucking and will continue with that business, while his daughter oversees the salon operation.

The family is pleased with the contractor, Scott Pierce of PMG Construction, who did the buildout for them. The walls are beautifully textured and the floors are all dark wood. Pierce had an artist come in and do a glaze on the walls.

Amanda said Heavenly Helpings, a nearby caterer, will provide lunches for full-day spa clients and other special events. The salon will hold “Princess Tea Parties” and bachelorette parties after hours, from 7 to 10 p.m. Guests can get mini massages, manicures, punch and cookies. And food will be geared to their dietary needs.

Hours will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, with the last appointment made at 7 p.m.; Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the last appointment around 5 p.m.

You can call the shop at 317-996-2966.

Green Spa Opens Bay Ridge NY - The Spa and Wellness Center/Green Spa New York

Bay Ridge’s ‘Green Spa’ Grand Opening

It’s getting easier being “green” but it sure takes a lot of hard work. On Earth Day on Tuesday evening, over 100 Brooklyn business and civic leaders celebrated its “eco-pioneering” small business, The Spa and Wellness Center/Green Spa New York at 8804 Third Ave.

“We’re happy to be celebrating our 10th anniversary in Bay Ridge on Third Avenue with our business transformed into the Green Spa,” said Sheila Brody, co-owner of the spa. “We are the first all green spa and the first all green building in Bay Ridge. This is a building of hope and encouragement, taking a lead that this can be done.”

The business opened 10 years ago on the block, with only one floor. Three years ago it moved into a neighboring building when the spa owners embarked on transforming the entire three-story brick building into a luxurious environmentally friendly haven made of recycled natural furniture, walls, floors and ceilings, and offering a wide array of natural organic products and services.

Solar power was added and an energy-saving infrastructure was installed. “Our Green Movement is dedicated to (using the letters SPA for) Spirituality, Personal Care and Awareness,” its business purpose states. People were given tours at the gala, and treated to jazz music and catered refreshments in its backyard tea garden.

“This is the second green business opening in Bay Ridge that I’ve been to,” said Borough President Marty Markowitz, accompanied by Chief of Staff Carlo Scissura. “The first was a few blocks down the avenue, Little Cupcake, the first bakery in Brooklyn that’s all green. This Green Spa effort is a wonderful effort by the owners… You’ve taken a bold step for other businesses to follow your lead.” “The Green Spa can serve as a prototype for environmentally friendly businesses along Third Avenue,” said Bob Howe, president of the Merchants of Third Avenue. “The owners live and work in our community and are giving back to the community with their business and civic activity.”

Bay Ridge resident Rosalie Rance, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce’s membership director, launched the ribbon-cutting ceremony remarks. “There are great people behind this business. They have created three floors using recycled material for their rooms, furniture and décor, and offer a variety of organic natural items to help people feel and look good.”

The spa, a longtime member of the Merchants of Third Avenue, and its owners are among those being honored this year as the organization’s “2008 Pioneers of Third Avenue.” The business, Rance said, is also one of the newest members of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, and among several chamber businesses adopting green power, products and décor.

“It’s a small green and family owned business with a large space and staff, and a bounty of natural product and service offerings,” said Chamber President Carl Humm in his welcome to the new chamber member.

The Green Spa was praised by elected officials on all levels of government. “This is truly a great day for Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and the City of New York,” said state Senator Marty Golden. “You are sending a green signal to other stores, saying, ‘If I can do it here, you can do it, too!’”

“The City Council is taking leadership in helping the environment, and the council recently passed the Climate Control Act,” said Council Member Vincent Gentile, noting that the spa is in tune with the city. “Here in Bay Ridge we’re shouting the praises of a green business right now.”

“They’ve done a heck of a job here,” said Democratic congressional hopeful Steve Harrison, who had served as Community Board 10 chair a few years ago. “We need more of this type of green business.” Harrison has made a clean energy policy based on the scale of the 1960’s Apollo Moon exploration project as a keystone of his campaign.
