Scrip buys New Life Systems

Scrip Companies recently acquired New Life Systems, a manufacturer and catalog distributor of massage and spa products, to bolster its presence in the spa and wellness market. Terms of the deal, were not disclosed.

New Life Systems and its sister company, Lotus Touch, are a consumer and business-to-business hybrid. They target massage therapists, aromatherapists, and their clients.

According to Kray Kibler, Scrip Companies’ chief financial officer, the New Life acquisition breathes new life in its existing spa businesses, Day Spa Warehouse and Scrip Spa Supply. Both spa businesses market via catalog and via Internet, said Kibler.

In addition to the spa divisions, Scrip Companies provides chiropractic supplies and equipment through Hessco, a business it acquired in July, and through its Massage Warehouse division. The spa and chiropractic business also sells via a catalog and via the Internet.

Personal Genetic Health Helps you to Age Better - Now in Spas

Know Your Personal Genetic Health to Age Better Now!

With National DNA Day on April 25th, Suracell Inc. urges Americans to use their genes to promote healthy aging

At the local drug store, do you stock up on everything touted as “good for you?” Convinced there’s nothing you can do to improve the way you age? Think again, says Suracell, Inc., the pioneer in personal genetic health. With National DNA Day on April 25, Suracell is urging Americans to be proactive about their genetic legacy. By discovering your personal genetic health (PGH) profile through physician-supervised DNA testing, a nutritional supplement and lifestyle plan can be customized specifically for you, so you are not a passive victim of genetic inheritance.

“In today’s world, you take your car to the mechanic, he plugs it into his computer and has enough information to know what’s wrong and how to fix it. DNA testing provides that same window into your body’s health, allowing a medical professional to know how to help you strengthen your genetic make-up,” says Vincent Giampapa, MD, founder of Suracell, renowned anti-aging physician, plastic surgeon and author of five books including the newly released, “The Gene Makeover: The 21st Century Anti-Aging Breakthrough.”

Suracell wants the public to know we can now age better than our predecessors. The company is the first to create a physician-supervised, DNA test available only through a medical, health or wellness center affiliated with Suracell. The test utilizes cheek swab samples and biomarkers that are sent to certified testing laboratories where your Personal Genetic Health (PGH) profile is determined. Once your results are sent back to Suracell, they are reviewed by medical professionals, along with findings from your lifestyle questionnaire. The team evaluates how efficiently your body handles the five key biological processes critical to healthy aging:

– Blood sugar control — Inflammation control — Protection from oxidative stress and resulting free radicals — Optimal gene expression related to cardiovascular health — Normal cellular and DNA repair

The Suracell team then creates your individualized PGH Program, comprised of specific nutritional supplements related to your genetic makeup and unique needs, as well as lifestyle recommendations for healthy aging. Only Suracell emphasizes specific genetic characteristics related to the five key healthy aging processes when developing these personalized programs.

Suracell “Core Nutrition” products can be ordered without DNA testing, while the “Repair” products are included as part of the complete PGH Program.

Suracell’s DNA Analysis kits are available through medical spas, physician offices and wellness centers nationwide.

Silhouettes Day Spa

REVIEW THIS SPA NOW

ENGLEWOOD, FL – Charity Cain believes there are certain luxuries women won’t give up — even during economic uncertainties.

“The thing about Americans and Europeans is that they want to look pretty and will spend money on making themselves look good,” Cain said, “especially women.”

The former office where she began her career in real estate has been transformed into her latest business, Silhouettes Day Spa, located at 2240 S. McCall Road.

The path to the front door leads to a tranquil escape away from Englewood.

Once inside, the interior has been converted to a sea of deep burgundy, mahogany furnishings and gold trimming. Soothing music and scents of essential oils fill the air.

Above a product showcase are bold letters that spell the word “inspire.”

“That’s exactly what we want to do,” she said, “to inspire people when they come in here.”

Cain’s personal struggle became her latest endeavor.

After her fourth child, she felt uncomfortable with her body.

“I tried everything. I’ve gone to Walgreens, I’ve gone to Wal-Mart. I’ve bought every pill,” she said.

But it wasn’t until she traveled overseas when Cain discovered “Ionithermie” and decided to bring it to Englewood.

Ionithermie is a treatment involving the application of electronic stimulation to areas of the body through a body mask of conductive clay. The cost is $149-$159 per session.

Other services offered at the spa include five different types of massages including of Swedish, prenatal and couples; various facials, body wraps, spray tans and waxing services.

After three treatments, Cain was convinced.

“My skin was firmer, my stomach was more toned and I lost my stretch marks,” she said.

So she purchased the products and opened the spa Feb. 25.

As businesses are closing because of the economic crunch, Cain said she has been “slammed” and she believes the reason is she has products that people want.

When Tiffany McMenamin first heard about the Ionithermie treatments, she was skeptical.

But when she noticed Cain’s results, she budgeted for months in advance to be able to afford six sessions, totaling $800.

McMenamin, who just had a baby, said she noticed her dark purple stretch marks reduce to a pale white and she said that she lost a total of 32 inches.

“Before, it looked like Freddy Kruger attacked my body,” she said.

But after her treatments were complete, she was so impressed with the results.

“People will be hooked on it,” McMenamin said.

Hotel Galvez opens luxurious spa

REVIEW THIS SPA NOW

Mary Hodges got a sneak peak of The Spa at the Hotel Galvez before architects, designers and construction workers descended into the hotel’s basement and transformed it into an underground pampering retreat.

The almost 10,000-square-foot storage space was filled with boxes and banquet furniture, but begged to be restored to its former glory as the center of guests’ indoor recreation. When the hotel was built in 1911, the basement was home to a barbershop, candy and drugstore and soda fountain.

In 2005, hotel owners George and Cynthia Mitchell, island natives well known for their work to revitalize the city’s historic buildings and public spaces, decided to convert the space into a full-service spa to serve both locals and hotel guests.

Hodges, who is a friend of the Mitchells, was one of a small group who got a preview of the plans as the family sketched them out.

“I am just floored over this,” she said Thursday after touring the finished product. “I’m a big traveler, and I’ve had massages in Yugoslavia, Rome and Bangkok. I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Hodges acknowledged she’d never made a visit to any of New York’s world-famous spas, but said she found it hard to believe even they could compare to what was now available beneath the Galvez lobby.

Increasingly Popular

Spa popularity has almost doubled in the last five years as more and more people look for an experience of relaxation and escape from the pressures of their daily lives.

In 2003, the International Spa Association counted 9,865 spa facilities in the United States. By July 2007, the number of spas had grown to 14,615.

One in four Americans has visited a spa, and the more than 32 million active spa clients generated $9.4 billion in revenue for the industry in 2006, according to the association.

Comfort, Luxury, Tranquility

The Galvez spa is unlike anything else available in Galveston, said Director Vanessa Harris. It’s mission is to provide an environment of total comfort, luxury and tranquility, she said.

The experience starts in the spa’s meditation garden, a walled oasis seemingly worlds away from the busy street that runs just outside its perimeter. A tiled wall covered with flowing water and a gazing pool, where a bed of smooth black river rocks glistens just below the surface, begins to create a more serene state of mind.

Clients transition from the bright light of a sunny island day into the cool and soft atmosphere of the spa’s interior down a long staircase that ends at a wall inlaid with mother of pearl.

The walls, floors and furniture are all done in neutral tones that invoke the feeling of tranquility associated with standing on an empty beach.

Inspired By The Sea

The spa’s treatments are inspired by the sea, with hydrotherapy baths, facials and massages enhanced with marine extracts. Prices range from $30 for a 20-minute aromatherapy bath to $200 for a massage done by two therapists.

Clients start their treatment with a stop in the relaxation room, where they can read, soak their feet in a rose petal-infused bath or listen to guided meditation recordings.

The spa is equipped with seven treatment rooms, including what staff say is the island’s only Vichy shower — a system of water jets that exfoliates and polishes clients while they are laying on a massage table.

The facility was designed with the hotel’s numerous wedding parties in mind and offers a suite where bride and bridesmaids or groups of friends can gather to share their pampering experience together.

The spa includes a full-service salon that provides hair, nail and makeup services and uses Kérastase, an elite line of hair care products found only in 1 percent of American spas.

Good Investment

The renovation, which cost $6 million and took 22 months to complete, also includes a new fitness center with Paramount and Precor equipment, Pilates classes and an on-site private trainer.

Melinda Minton, executive director of The Spa Association, said the Mitchells probably made a good investment.

In a recent survey, 67 percent of respondents said they based their decision about where to stay on spa amenities, Minton said.

And trips to the spa are no longer saved for special occasions, she said.

“A lot of people just have a standing appointment,” she said, attributing spa popularity to the overall focus being placed on health and wellness.

“There’s been a real switch to going to the spa as part of a routine.”

Hodges made an appointment at the spa for a Swedish massage shortly after it opened on March 15.

She said she planned to visit the salon again this weekend for a pedicure.

“I hope the locals realize how special this place is and come and enjoy it,” she said.

Statistically, you’re successful if your small business lasts seven years. Peggy and Frank Baker opened a therapeutic massage salon, Healing Garden Therapies, in 2001, with about 40 dedicated customers, made it through Katrina and are thriving.

REVIEW THIS SPA NOW

Peggy Baker, a former banking professional, had a deep desire to help people. Entrepreneurial drive wasn’t a priority, she said, but it came with the territory. After graduating from massage school, she connected with another student looking for a job, and the Bakers found a retail space.

Her banking background drove Baker to make deliberate choices. It was important, she felt, to make herself available regular hours so people could count on her.

“A lot of people get themselves a cell phone and want customers to call and arrange a time. That didn’t feel right. I had to be visible,” she said.

There were times when Baker worked at bookkeeping and organizing. There were few customers for the tiny shop, less than 700 square feet, on U.S. 49 North.

With help from family and friends, Baker dug in and made a go of it, publishing attractive fliers and walking them from Oak Street to Interstate 10. They wore uniform shirts with their names on them.

“It was important that people know who we were. I wanted a professional appearance so people would get to know us and come by,” she said.

Now, they have a larger, attractive spa supported by 5,000 clients from as far away as Wiggins, Jackson, New Orleans and Mobile.

In July 2005, Healing Gardens moved to its present location at 12100 U.S. 49 North with three times the space, hand-painted wall décor, Zenlike ambience, and a team of contractor-therapists working in successful harmony. Weeks later, Katrina crashed through the tranquil space, taking off most of the building’s back and roof.

After the first shock, Baker and company decided they could be immobilized by depression or dig in and wrench victory away from Katrina. By hand, sometimes tired to the bone, they and neighbor business owners dug away debris and began recovery.

Three weeks after the storm, Healing Gardens reopened and the Bakers hoped for enough business to hold on.

Business boomed. A steady stream of shell-shocked people came for a quiet hour of help for fatigue, deep muscle pain and pain that only human caring could heal. Baker cautioned her therapists to work quietly, not asking questions or making customers relive grief. To her amazement, no one could stem the surge of stories, remembrances and feelings from people needing to vent.

Repairs took a year. Now, the last leak is gone. Healing Gardens’ reputation, said Baker, brings patient-referrals from doctors and calls from resort/hotels wanting services for their guests. The customer list grows and the team, headed by Eilene Woodward, spa manager, is the best she’s ever had.

Baker said following a dream is risky and stressful. She and Frank made life changes to accommodate her responsibilities. Frank learned to cook and fend for himself, Peggy said. She believes to succeed you have to jump in with both feet and commit to challenges.

“You need a budget and you have to be married to that business for a while. You have to love what you’re doing,” she said. Discipline is something she appears to understand.

Baker developed strategies as she went. She said high volume spas take in annual receipts upward of $1 million. Her goal is to provide personal service and attention. She wants to know people’s names and remember their preferences. She doesn’t want to lose the trust of medical professionals comfortable in referring their patients to her.

She keeps Healing Gardens’ growth controlled, with gross receipts less than half the high figures. Expenses are substantial, with electric massage tables costing $2,500, rising energy costs, laundry expenses and cosmetic inventories that must rotate with trends. Contractors take half of each service fee, so payroll can be $200,000 annually.

Baker’s customer base is 60 percent women and 40 percent men. Healing Gardens provides therapeutic massage, body wraps, facials, aromatherapy and other services, with hours daily except Sundays.

Rejuvinate Spa, Louisburg KS Spa and skin care business offers a variety of services

Businesswoman Kim Johnson hopes to pamper Louisburg residents with the opening of her creation: Rejuvenate Spa

Kim Johnson saw a need in Louisburg for a spa and skin care store, and she filled that need by opening Rejuvenate Spa on March 8.

The pale blue colors and water feature in the waiting area are there to keep customers calm just before they go in for treatments.

Johnson, who is the owner of Rejuvenate, said she moved to Louisburg from Overland Park last year.

“I wanted to open my own place,” she said.

After attending the Academy of Aesthetic Arts in Shawnee Mission and working at the school’s full-service spa, Johnson decided to branch out on her own.

And because her parents owned a spa when she was growing up, she helped run the business before they sold it.

She also worked at Par Exsolance in Overland Park.

“That’s where I knew I wanted to go into skin care,” Johnson said.

Johnson is licensed to perform pharmaceutical-grade chemical peels, microdermabrasions, facials, waxing, make-up and body treatments.

Her specialty, she said, is performing chemical peels and microdermabrasions, because she wanted to work for a plastic surgeon before opening her store in Louisburg.

She also hired a part-time massage therapist, Shelia Farrow, who has 10 years experience in massage. Before the last three years working in Louisburg, Johnson said Farrow worked at the Mario Triccoci salon in Overland Park.

Farrow performs massages, body treatments and body therapies.

Johnson said she chose to open her store at 8A S. Broadway St. because of the good location and location size.

“It’s downtown, visible to people and has easy access,” she said.

Johnson accepts walk-ins and appointments Tuesday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Mondays by appointment. Call 837-4685
