Cow Cuddling: A Unique Way to Relieve Stress and Connect with Nature

About 20 years ago, I wanted to buy my mother a house.  I asked a realtor friend of mine to take my mom out house hunting.  That afternoon my mom returned from house hunting, she was so excited.  She said that she found “the perfect house” and that the realtor would take me there the next day with her.

The next day, we were driving for over an hour, and I asked the realtor if we were still in the same state.  He replied, “Yes, we are just about thirty minutes away.” I looked in the back seat at my mom and asked her why she was so far out.

She smiled and said, “The land is so flat, and it reminds me of Long Island.”  We continued driving for another half-hour and finally arrived at the home my mom liked.  As we stepped out of the car, my mom looked at me excitedly and said, “Oh, and did I tell you the smell of the cows reminds me of Ireland?”.

The Smell of the Cows

The smell of the cows, I thought to myself. Most people would not consider that a selling point.  I was indifferent to cows growing up. I saw them at a distance on pastures in Pennsylvania or upstate New York, but they were just there.  To me just big animals.

Cows Have Best Friends

As time passed, my mom developed dementia at the age of 90.  Three years later, I knew she could not live independently, and I moved down to the home I bought for her.  Around the corner lived two big black cows.  One morning, as I walked my two labradors, the two cows spotted us, stared at us, and then started to walk to the fence to greet us.  The other cow followed.

There we stood, the five of us at the fence, the dogs sniffing the cows and the cows bowing their heads down to smell the Labs in a gesture of saying how are you this morning?  The cows would walk by our side until we reached the end of the property, and then they would run to the back of the property as if to say, “ok, we will see you tomorrow”.  Every day, these two cows would greet us and walk with us.

I was amazed at how wonderful cows are, and one day, I came across an article that cows have “best friends.”  Cows are very social animals.  It changed the whole way I thought about cows.  So, it was no surprise to me when the new Wellness Trend Cow Cuddling started.

They Took Down the Pasture and Put Up Apartments

Today, The pasture was approved to be sold for the development of apartments.  I am so sad; nothing makes you happier than seeing the cows graze in the morning sun or cuddle under the tree in the shade.  When the babies are born they look like little dogs so cute.

How Cows Benefit the Environment

Cows do so much for the land:

  • Cows upcycle materials humans cannot consume – Cows eat grass, hay, silage, and other agricultural byproducts that humans do not consume and convert into meat, milk, and leather. This helps utilize agricultural land more efficiently. (Source: PennState Extension)
  • Cow manure adds organic matter to soil – Cow manure provides organic matter and nutrients that improve soil health, structure, and water retention capacity. This can reduce the need for chemical fertilizers. (Source: UC Davis)
  • Grazing can increase biodiversity – Well-managed grazing systems where cows rotate through pastures can promote plant biodiversity and provide habitat for other animals compared to depleted or neglected grasslands. (Source: USDA)
  • Grazing reduces fire risk – Grazing helps control brush, grass, and other flammable vegetation that could fuel wildfires in grassland and forest areas. (Source: University of California)
  • Carbon sequestration – Well-managed pastures and grasslands grazed by cows can sequester carbon, offsetting some of cows’ own greenhouse gas emissions. Estimates vary depending on exact quantities. (Source: PNAS)
