The Zone Diet

 

The Zone Diet boasts that its results aid in weight loss, chronic disorders and can assist with women's health, men's health, and children's health levels. The Zone Diet can also increase the body's athletic performance. The overall goal for the creation of the Zone Diet was to decrease inflammation and to control insulin levels within the body. The diet, participated in by many celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston, is a simple, moderate and well-balanced diet, according to creators. It is also clinically-proven, and designed to complement the everyday person's lifestyle.

Created by Dr. Barry Sears, the Zone Diet was created to assist people on their weight loss journey, but it also fights the effects of aging, reduces the risk of chronic disorders and improves mental health and physical performance. This is achieved by the diet's approach to eating the right combination of foods that contain protein, fat and carbohydrates at every meal. The diet even allows snacks! Each meal or snack is instructed to begin with a low-fat protein item, followed by a low glycemic-load carbohydrate and all meals and snacks are required to end with good fats, such as, olive oil.

Originally developed by Barry Sears, PhD, this nutrition assessment is centered around the almost drug-like effects of food, to position your body within a hormonally controlled "Zone" 24 hours a day. The Zone Diet plan consists of balancing your diet and ensuring 40% of your daily caloric intake is in the form of carbohydrate, 30% protein, and 30% fat. Food is broken down into its basic components, glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids, and enters you bloodstream.

 
Zone Diet

The Zone Diet argues that food should be thought of as a drug that has a powerful effect on the body. With drugs, it’s too much and it becomes toxic, too little and it would be inefficient. Therefore everything you eat needs to have the right levels of nutrients (protein, carbohydrate and fat) to produce an appropriate hormonal response. A key point of the diet plan is not to focus on calories but the ratio of protein to carbohydrate. You need to aim for a ratio of 0.75 protein to carbohydrate. i.e. 1 gram of carb to 0.75 grams of protein. However, each of us require a different amount of protein. This is based on your physical activity, weight and body fat. For example if you're sedentary you would only need 0.5 grams of protein per pound of lean body mass, this, multiplied by your lean body mass would give you your daily protein requirement.  There are four key elements to the Zone program:

  • The Zone diet,
  • The use monounsaturated fats,

The Zone Diet consists of several steps to begin the program, but many believe these steps are easy to stick with for weeks and months after starting. Some of the steps are to eat a Zone meal or snack within one hour after waking up in the morning, eat every four to six hours after a meal or two to two and a half hours after a snack whether you are hungry or not. The diet instructs dieters to listen to their bodies to determine their hunger and focus levels before every meal or snack that they consume. Creators feel that the lack of hunger and the ability to focus are clear signs that the Zone Diet is working for you. Large quantities of water consumption are recommended on the Zone Diet; eight, eight ounce glasses a day.

The Zone Diet requires that followers of the plan intake the right combinations of foods throughout the day. The diet recommends foods with protein, fat and carbohydrates with every meal and snack.

Creators of the diet recommend low-fat proteins, servings of which usually fit into the palm of a person's hand and are no thicker than the hand, say creators. This usually rounds out to three ounces for women and four ounces for men. Most snacks are often around one ounce in size for both women and men.

For low glycemic-load carbohydrates, the diet instructs that dieters eat vegetables and fruits with every meal. Lastly, creators suggest olive oil or nuts at the end of each meal.

  • Very tedious diet with strict regimented plans.
  • Can be costly.
  • Many calculations to consider with tables and charts that can be somewhat confusing.
  • Engaging in endurance exercise risks the result of poor energy levels and muscular fatigue due to an inadequate carbohydrate intake.
  • In a fast paced lifestyle this diet can be hard to follow
  • Complicated rules make up this diet. Calculations of protein requirements based on complex charts and tables are sometimes hard to understand and hard to keep up with. Must also follow something called the "macronutrient block method" to determine how many "blocks" are allowed per day and when they can be eaten.

Diet Summary
